The Denmark China connection

(28 augustus 2014)

Last year Samantha and I had qualified ourselves for the World Championships which were then organized in China. Our Association didn’t have the funds to delegate us but with a crowdfunding project we got that much financial support that we were able to go.

This year the World Championships are organized by Badminton Denmark. The venue is the Ballerup Super Arena, some 25 km from Copenhagen. So not far to travel and because of that a lot cheaper for the Association to delegate us.

Early Saturdaymorning we fly to Copenhagen by KLM and we move into the Zleep Hotel which is located around the corner of the arena. Very convenient but far from urban life. So nothing to distract us and we can focus completely on our training and the matches to come.

The arena is originally build for cycling racing. But now it has been transformed into a fantastically decorated badminton arena. The Danes have managed to introduce something very innovative. When you are called for a match your name appears on a display at the court where you are playing, also showing your picture and the country you represent. When you start with the warming up the display is raised and changes into the life score board. Very ingenious. Apart from this the whole crew of volunteers helping to make this tournament a success are dressed in bright orange shirts. You will understand that we Dutch feel at home.

Our first match is scheduled Monday morning. We know our opponents, Kaesbauer en Herttrich, pretty well. Last March at the Swiss Open we were defeated by them in 2 games. So time for revanche.

In the beginning of the first game we both don’t give way but after the interval we manage to switch to an other playing level and even score 5 consecutive points. We take a good lead and soon we have game point which we don’t cash. At the second game point we take the win, 21-16. In the second game we fall behind pretty soon but again after the interval we score 5 consecutive points and draw level. After that we both don’t give way much, but in the final stage we get the first game point. Again we don’t finish it off. We come to 20-20 but then we score 2 points and win the match.

The second round on Tuesday is tough. We meet the Chinese Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong, seeded 10th and number 11 on the world ranking. Only six months they are playing together and they have already developed to a “world class” mixed double pair. Well in advance we analyzed their playing style but especially new pairs do easily change their style sometimes. Of course they don’t play completely different now but the Chinese man was playing much better than we had seen on videos. Better control at mid court, no stupid choices, no free points because of service mistakes etc.

We make a good start in the first game and we don’t give way much. But then the Chinese accelerate and we can’t keep up with them. Two times they score 4 or 5 consecutive points and we don’t get a chance anymore.
We lose : 12-21. In the second game we offer better resistance but it’s no close battle at all. We lose the game by 16-21 and the match.

Of course we are not satisfied with the result (losing in the second round) but we are with the way we played these two matches. Our coach Kim is also satisfied and he sees much progress since he started his job 5 months ago. Our mixed in the World Championships is finished but the spirit is unchanged and high. A new season is about to start with new challenges and with good chances to improve our world ranking.

The past weeks Samantha and I, together with Kim, have looked at the tournament program for the months to come. Thereby we had to make the choice of whether to play Super Series in China and Hong Kong or not. Our coach and our intellect told us to go there but our financial situation told us not to go. The budget we get from our Association is not sufficient and with 4 more months to go we have very little money left. Still, after much deliberation we did cut the knot. In November we’ll play the Thaihot China Open and immediately after that the Sunrise Hong Kong Open. The cost of the tournament hotel in Hong Kong is higher than the cost of the return flight to Fuzhou and Hong Kong. This may give you an idea about how heavily this trip weighs on our budget. I do not intend to start a crowdfunding project again like I did last year. After all it’s not a World or European Championship we are talking about. But to us these two tournaments are equally important and I will not refrain from saying that any financial support will be more than welcome. If you want to make a contribution please send me an email at info@jorritderuiter.com. I will be very grateful.

A positive ending to the week after another setback

(30 september 2013)

Last week started with another setback. Tuesday I got informed that my mixed doubles partner Samantha had broken her foot during a workout. It will take 4 to 6 weeks for her to recover. An injury is always very unpleasant but in this case it’s most inconvenient with 5 big tournaments ahead of us all scheduled in the next 6 weeks. We have already been withdrawn from the Dutch Open, the Danish and French Open, the Bitburger and the Scottish Open. The coming 2 months we won’t be able to play tournaments together which means that we will fall back on the world ranking and lose our 25th position which granted us direct access to the Super Serie tournaments. Let’s hope that Samantha will have a successful rehabilitation period allowing her to make a good comeback.

Fortunately there is also positive news. Last weekend we had to play 2 matches in the German Premier League: an away match versus Berlin and a home match versus Rosenheim. We left for the German Capital on Friday because we wanted to prepare ourselves optimally for this encounter with the league winner of the past years.
The two doubles were won but both men’s singles were lost. Than Judith Meulendijks scored our third point by winning her single in 2 games. The mixed double and last match was also won and with a 2-4 victory and 2 points we could start our journey back to Mülheim. A top performance!

On Sunday we met Rosenheim in our own hall in Mülheim. We started with the two doubles. The ladies double was won rather easily but our men’s double was tough. I was still bothered by the effects of the long car journey to and from Berlin but after about an hour we decided the third game in our favour putting the score on a 2-0 lead. Subsequently all 3 single matches were also won by our team and thus we could include another 2 points on the list. As Johanna got slightly injured the day before and was still bothered by it we decided to give up the mixed doubles and accept a 5-1 final score. 4 points in two encounters and even nicer: a number one position on the ranking!! Every match again it is great fun to play with and for this team and no doubt our team spirit is one of the most important ingredients for this success. Let’s hope that we can keep this good playing and that we will make a great season!

For those who can read German: you’ll find a report on the 2 matches at the following link:

Sponsors needed!!

(29 augustus 2013)

A new season is imminent and I have been training hard again for almost 2 weeks now. After the World Championships I enjoyed a badminton-free week. To recover from the many trips but most of all to take time to look ahead and reflect on what’s going to come, on the few certainties and the many uncertainties.

It’s certain that for me the new season will begin on Sunday with the start of the German Premier League. As I mentioned before I will be playing for 1.BV Mülheim again. I had a magnificent year with this club last year and the same team is ready to go hard at it again. Sunday afternoon we’ll meet BC Düren at home in our own RWE Sportshall, An den Sportstätten 6 in Mülheim.

It’s also certain that I will participate in the Yonex Belgian International mid September. The Association pays the registration fee, transport and lodging we will have to arrange ourselves and is for our own account again. This tournament is beginning to become some sort of a tradition at the start of every new badminton season. It’s also a tournament where I have played with varying degrees of success. I made it to the finals once, but last year was a disaster when I lost both the mixed doubles and the men’s doubles in the first round. Such sharp contrasts. In addition to the mixed double with Samantha I will also make a double with Robin Tabeling who is a new senior in the National squad and who has, just like me, no permanent doubles partner. We already practised together a couple of times and so it was an easy choice to play this tournament together. After such a long period of just playing the mixed it feels good to play the men’s doubles again. I am looking forward to this event, not only because my partners and I hope to perform well but also because I like to play in Belgium. During my crowdfunding project I got a lot of (financial) support from Belgians and a good performance at this tournament is the least I should be able to give in return.

With these two certainties the party is over. What remains are large uncertainties. The Association has indicated that they will not pay for tournaments till the end of this year and we already know that next year’s budget will also be meagre. Players will have to find funding for their tournaments themselves like we did with our crowdfunding project for the World championships earlier this year. Improving our present world ranking in the mixed doubles requires the playing of at least 15 tournaments a year of which 6 outside Europe.
After the tournament in Belgium there are 7 other events we would like to participate in. Among these are the Super Series Events in Denmark and France but we will need funding from other sources again to make it possible, because to be honest I myself don’t have the money!!!
The Dutch Badminton Association has recently introduced a monthly fee of € 100 as a contribution to the costs of training and of the tournament program (for that matter I don’t know which tournament program). In addition to that I have to pay for my rent, my health insurance and my cost of living. The playing of the required tournaments will be an illusion without a main sponsor and subsponsors.

Our worldranking is rising well now and Samantha and I would love to make the next step towards the top 20 of the world. Therefore, and I do it with great reluctance, I again call on my fantastic fancrowd for help. I have a shirt with on the front room for advertising, I have sleeves and a collar, shorts and a tracksuit on which (company) logo’s can be placed. If you know a company or a person in your network who is open to sponsoring an athlete who has an Olympic target please let me know via the contact button on this site or send an email to jorrit.de.ruiter@planet.nl.

Of course we continue to welcome all financial contributions. Our Worlds project has proven that many small contributions can make up a large amount. Our objective is now the realization of a fully fledged tournament program on the way to our ultimate goal: RIO 2016. Do you want to help (again)? Every Euro, Dollar or Pound you can spare is welcome on account IBAN NL09RABO 032 44 25 996 in the name of J.W. de Ruiter. Please mention your email address aswell.

Yonex Denmark Open

(20 oktober 2012)
