Ready for week 2 with Xu

(11 april 2011)

Last week Xu Huaiwen started at Papendal and her first training sessions were very good!

Monday afternoon I was quite excited when I entered the hall, but I didn’t see Xu. I was a bit disappointed when I heard that she had arrived but first had to make some important arrangements for her stay here in Holland. But on Tuesday she made her appearance and her training sessions this first week were excellent. It had been a long time since we practised specific strokes like e.g. a deceptive dropshot, but we also trained briefly and intensely specific ways of playing doubles. Anyway I was quite exhausted at Friday noon and that was a good sign.

Friday night we finished the season with the van Zijderveld team with a dinner and bowling match in Amstelveen. It was a big and fun group because all the reservists of last season had been invited too. I was 8 years old when I bowled for the last time so the first round was a disaster. After some expert tips from my teammates I started round 2 with a strike followed by numerous spares. I actually started to like it. A pity that we had only one hour to play!

Today a new week at Papendal will start in which we will begin to prepare ourselves for the Velo Dutch International which  is scheduled in 10 days from now. After this sunny weekend I am ready for it.

Op naar week 2 met Xu

(11 april 2011)

It’s been a quiet period

(1 april 2011)

First of all my apologies for not writing the past two weeks. It has been a quiet period with very little news. After last month series of tournaments we have a sort of intermediate period. We are awaiting our new lady trainer Huaiwen Xu who will start next Monday.

The past two weeks it was mainly physical work at Papendal. The multishuttle trainings on Tuesday and Thursday were very tough but on the other hand these sessions give a lot of satisfaction. Yesterday we were informed which players are going to play for the Sudirman Cup, the World Championship for National teams next month in Qingdao, China. For the second time in my career I have been selected for this fantastic event. In 2009 this tournament was in Guangzhou and the atmosphere in the stadium was great. Anyway we still have 7 weeks to go before we leave. Before that we will play the Dutch International in Wateringen and the new international challenge tournament in Frederikshavn, Denmark.

For the rest it didn’t stay unnoticed that there are a lot of transfers going to take place.  There is also gossip about me but I haven´t made up my mind yet. As soon as I have I will let you know.

Het is even rustig geweest

(1 april 2011)

Series of tournaments has ended

(19 maart 2011)

It’s time for reflection. The last 3 tournaments in Germany, England and Switzerland shall be followed by a number of weeks of hard, very hard training!

Unfortunately these tournaments haven’t brought what they could and should have brought. During the first two we lost from better Korean pairs but at times we could keep up with them. In Switzerland these experiences should have paid out in our match against the French, but they didn’t. What a pity! Fortunately there was all of a sudden a great boost on Thursday evening when Koen and Ruud defeated the number one men’s pair of the world the Danes Boe and Mogensen. It was a splendid match and I cheered like hell. It felt like I was at that court myself. I was really happy! I recognised the feeling I had when we had won a match against a top 10 Chinese pair at the Bitburger Open last September. It’s super to have such an experience and you should cherish the feeling.

Monday the usual training at Papendal will start again. It is the last week with one coach. On April 4th our new female coach and trainer Xu Huaiwen will make her appearance. And it is about time, because I am ready for a new challenge.

A teachable German Open

(3 maart 2011)

In the meantime I am back at Papendal. The German Open is finished, for me. It were instructive days. Both in mixed and in men’s doubles Korean top players were our opponents.

Monday afternoon after the training I was called by the technical director that Paulien and I had been moved to the qualification tournament. Before, we were at the waiting list as neither of us still has a ranking in the mixed doubles anymore. Two places had come free, one right in the top of the schedule where there were not too strong couples or right at the bottom of the schedule between Korean and Japanese players. We ended up in the bottom part!
Our opponents were Shin Baek Choel and Ha Jung Eun. They are not a couple together and therefore also not mentioned on the world ranking, but both of them belong to the world-top. Shin won the mixed doubles in the Asian Games only a few months ago and Ha was playing the finals of the All England two years ago.

The first set we could handle quite well. The tactics we had worked well and there were good rallies. A few inaccurate movements made us loose the first game. The second game we did not start well. In the break we were 11-3 behind. But after that we picked up the way we were playing in the first set again, but because of too much difference we did not manage to get closer to them anymore.

The next day at 6 pm the men’s doubles had to be played against Jung and Lee. Of course I was well prepared and I had been watching their Youtube matches over and over again. The first game went very well. We played at our best. Only 4 or 5  service mistakes from our side made that the Koreans got their points quite easily. The rallies were very good, but in the end we lost the first game with 17-21. In the second game we came too much behind and it became clear why they are nr. 3 of the world and we are nr 44. The rallies were still good, but we did not manage to score many more points. In half an hour it was over and done with. Afterwards my coach and I had a talk about this match (Dave was not there as he still had to play the mixed) and we both were very satisfied!

This morning at Papendal I trained hard again for the next two tournaments. I hope tomorrow there will be some time to play matches as most of the dutch players will be finished in Mülheim and will be back home again.
Then a nice weekend off and on Monday we will be leaving for Birmingham to go to -in my opinion- one of the most beautiful tournaments. It’s one of my favourites: the All England.

I will try to keep you informed.

Leerzame German Open

(3 maart 2011)

Keep you posted!

Most dreams are a delusion…but not this one!

(27 februari 2011)

To fit up my room at Papendal and to get some inspiration I have a few posters on the walls. I have Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach on the door of my wardrobe, all Olympic medal winners can be found hanging on the wall and Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung above my bed. When I looked briefly at the draw for the German Open Grand Prix Gold I thought in a split second that I was dreaming. I squeezed myself into my right arm. Ouch! Not a dream, but hard reality! Upcoming week, these two top Koreans on the wall above my bed will be our opponents!

Not exactly a good draw, as one month ago these numbers 3 of the world, won the super-strong Super Series Premier of Korea. Nevertheless I am still very excited. I think I have watched 200 different videos of these men on Youtube and it’s always a pleasure to watch them. I also trained with them last year when I was at a training camp in Korea. That was really informative and one of the best badminton memories for me so far! I ask myself especially how Dave and I are going to cope with their strong defence because believe me….every shuttle comes back and very fast! I also look forward to that great drop shot appearance of Jung, which I try to copy every training again. I’m still looking for a way to get the shuttle over the net with that sort of precision.

The schedule of the main tournament is not yet known, but I expect to play on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Paulien and I are on the waiting list in this super strong tournament because we both don’t have a mixed ranking anymore. That’s very unfortunate, but maybe there will be some withdrawals and will we be able to play after all.

Of course I will write a report later this week about the match against the Koreans.

Two league matches coming up

(11 februari 2011)

Last Tuesday I felt good enough to return to Papendal for the afternoon training which didn’t go very well as I still felt myself rather weak. After a good night’s rest I had regained my usual energy. The new power exercises have done their job because I feel every single muscle in my upper legs. We have played a number of matches to prepare ourselves for the European Team Championships next week in Amsterdam and Thursday afternoon I had to report at the Hospital in Ede for a medical check up by Dr. Vergouwen, our sports physician. We have discussed some particular power and stability exercises to further develop and improve my physical performance. The over all check up was fine and I have a healthy top sport body.

This weekend is the last one of this season with two scheduled league matches. On Saturday evening we’ll meet Duinwijck (for me in my back yard) and on Sunday BC Amersfoort is our opponent in our own hall in Amstelveen. Both matches will be difficult but we’ll do our best to collect as many points as possible.
