From Sudirman to Down Under

(18 mei 2015)

20150515_153104

20150515_215426Yesterday a great organized Sudirman Cup ended with an anticipated title for superpower China. Japan was beaten 3 to 0 and who else than badminton legend Lin Dan scored the winning point. Every time again I am amazed how he can make our sport look so easy. His footwork, his movements on court and his unbelievably effective way of playing are unique. A pleasure to watch and secretly to be very jealous of!

It was a pleasure to play in the arena specially built for the Sudirman Cup. Dongguan is a city where badminton is played just a bit more than in other Chinese cities, at least that was what one of our interpreters and assistants told me. In any case the matches were well attended. Moreover, there were 1.100 volunteers in and around the arena of which 600 residents and 500 students from Dongguan. For them this was a fantastic experience since they were chosen from many candidates to be part of this tournament. At any time of the day they were enthusiastic and incredibly friendly.

Our own competition in the 2nd group went well. In the group matches we consecutively defeated Canada, Spain and Singapore. After a false start in the mix against Canada we could take our revenge against Singapore. Samantha and I played against the former top 10 pair and current number 16 of the world Chrisnanta and Neo. We controlled the match well and despite a troubled start in the second game we could pursue our strategy well. As a result we won in two games and concluded this last group match with a 4-1 win. The game was broadcasted and if you like you may watch it here

Our first place in group 2 meant we had to play Hong Kong for the 13Th place in the tournament. When you are in group 2 it means that the 13th place is the highest position you can get. In fact it is a strange idea because you always want to play to win a tournament. As a country we will have to work hard during the coming years to improve our ranking in all areas and may be after some four years we’ll be able than to compete in the Champions group. If countries like Russia, England and Germany can do it, why not us? Moreover, the competition against Hong Kong was lost 1 by 3 and Samantha and I didn’t have to play the last match.

The next morning we were picked up very early to catch our flight to Melbourne and that’s where I write this report. How cool is that! I did not ever expect to get there because of the enormous distance to be bridged. Even from southern China it is still a 9.5 hours flight. However, Australia now has a Super Series tournament as well which will be held next week in Sydney. Before we go there next Sunday, we first join the trainings this week of the Australian National Team. Australia is a sporting nation at heart and their training center is beautiful and fully equipped. A great location to spend an interim week! The training sessions are mostly early in the morning so we can also enjoy some free time which we will obviously spent well. It’s autumn, almost winter here, but the weather is still very nice and
Melbourne is a great city! In short, it’s a great trip so far and I fully enjoy it!

Next week we have a tough draw. In the first round we have to play the Chinese Kai Lu and Huang Yaqiong who are in the top eight of the world ranking. At the World Championships we were beaten in two games but we will again analyze them and find a good strategy for that match. I’m very much looking forward to it! But now I’ll first enjoy Australia’s coffee capital, Melbourne!

Van Sudirman naar “Down Under”

(18 mei 2015)

20150515_153104

News from Fuzhou

(14 november 2014)

Friday, November 7, Samantha and I left for Asia to play the Thaihot China Open in Fuzhou, China and the Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open in Hong Kong. Both events are Super Series tournaments.

Although now and then troubled by some heavy turbulence we had a smooth journey and we arrived at our destination Saturday morning at 10:15 am (03:15 am CET). Fuzhou is a “relatively small” Chinese city with only 6 million inhabitants. I deliberately say small, because that’s what it seems to be to Chinese concepts. To me it is a real big city with gigantic buildings, many hotels and a lot of traffic, very very heavy traffic. I am glad we have traffic rules and regulations at home because here they play a kind of Tetris but then in a car, bus or tuk-tuk. They find the smallest holes to crawl through. Each ride to and from the arena is a hell of a job for the driver. But yes, he is accustomed to drive here and manoeuvre through so many vehicles. Fortunately it always goes well.

The arena in which we play is just built and still smells new. It is the largest hall in which I have ever played. I estimate that it certainly is 50 meters high. Along with the fact that the lights above the courts are very strong it makes the circumstances not exactly easy to play badminton in. We get the opportunity to practice 3 times in the main hall, which is a luxury position at such a big event. This allows us to adapt well to the playing conditions.

Here as well as next week in Hong Kong we have drawn the same opponents in the first round. They are Widianto and Dili from Indonesia. About a month ago they were our opponents in the final of the Yonex Dutch Open and then we lost in five games with the experimental scoring system 5×11. This time we play according to the familiar 3×21. Beforehand we analyze our final of the YDO together with our coach Kim Nielsen and we come to some new aspects to take notice of. With those in our minds we enter the arena. We play on one of the side courts, which is an advantage because there the light is less blazing.

From the first point in the first game we can play the game as we have discussed previously. Samantha is playing very well at the net and each time she dares challenging Dili. This way I can keep the field compact and several times I can successfully step forward from half court to the net. Until the end of the game, we stay close together. At 21-20, at our second game point, we score the winning point.
In the next game we continue our strong and offensive playing. The Indonesians are getting increasingly uncertain and start making mistakes. Two series of 7 and 4 consecutive points allow us to take a convincing lead and soon we decide the match in our favour by 21-10. Obviously we are very happy with this revenge win and also our coach Kim is more than happy!

In the second round, on Thursday, we face the numbers 4 of the seeding list, the former world champions Ahmad and Natsir from Indonesia. This mixed double rests on Lilyana Natsir. I dare honestly say that she is the best mixed doubles lady there is at the moment. Since 2005 she has been at the world top and she probably cannot even count the number of Super Series victories. Ahmad is the lucky elected one to be allowed to play with her and he too, of course, performs very well.
We have played them once before and that was during the Swiss Open in 2013. Then we had no chance and unfortunately this is still the case. We try everything, but they always have an answer. With twice 21-11 we have to acknowledge them as our superior. Their service and the way Natsir extends her overhead make this pair to be absolute world class.

For us the tournament is over. The next few days we’ll practice here and on Sunday we’ll fly to Hong Kong for the next Super Series tournament. There, on Wednesday, we’ll meet……. Widianto and Dili again!

The most beautiful day!

(29 april 2014)

It were busy weeks after the four tournaments that we played in March. The league season in the German Bundesliga is nearing its end, and we start to prepare for the European Championships in Kazan, Russia. Moreover Kim Nielsen, our new trainer and coach, arrives in the Netherlands and is now working fulltime for the Dutch Badminton Association.

For my team, 1.BV MĂĽlheim, the regular League season ends in a very strange way. Throughout the year we are leading in the League but in the last two matches against the numbers two and three of the list we waste 4 points and we finish 2nd. So we qualified for the playoff games of which we can organize the first one ourselves. Of course everything is still possible and we will do our utmost to make it to national champion of Germany!

The weeks at Papendal are very heavy. Kim pushes us to the limit with his varied training schedule. More than once when we start on Wednesday I wish it’s already Friday. A week before leaving for Kazan we take it a bit easier to give the body some time to recover. We still play the Dutch International in Wateringen. In the semifinals we lose from a Danish pair. Not exactly the result we had hoped for.

Easter Monday morning we depart from Schiphol to Moscow with final destination Kazan. This city, with over 1 million inhabitants, is located about 800 kilometers southeast of Moscow and organized last year’s Universiade. However, this week the city is the battleground of the European Badminton Championships. The fifth time I have qualified for this tournament. After a long day of traveling it is important to exercise the following day. On Tuesday, after some cardio and core stability training in the beautiful gym of the hotel, it’s time to go to the main hall. Our coaches Kim Nielsen and Rune Massing have prepared a training program which gives everyone a chance to get accustomed to the playing ground. I get an hour and ten minutes. The hall is large, high and quite drafty. The training is going well. In the evening, we analyze with Kim our opponents in the first round. We determine our strategy. I feel ready for the first match: Wednesday morning versus an English pair.

At half past ten we may enter the court which is covered by Badminton Europe TV. I am a little tense. We win the toss and we choose to start on the head wind side. We pop out of the starting blocks and win the first game by 21-8. In the second game we are on the” difficult” side. The English change their tactics, they seek the net to force us to lift. Till 16-16 it’s an equal battle but then we score five consecutive points and win the match. I’m relieved! Our masseur Gerrit has come along to Kazan. Great! He gives me a solid treat and after that I have the rest of the day off.

The opponents in the second round are Welshmen. There is nothing to be found on YouTube about them so there is nothing to analyze. We do discuss some individual points so we still have some guidance for the match. We are the second match after 10.00 am, a pleasant time. The game starts quite uneasy. Although we are leading all the time we do not feel comfortable. We waste four game points and we even lose this first game.
Also, at the start of the second game, we still have problems to take a lead. They play well, but we also know that they can’t maintain this level till the end of the second game. We get opportunities and continue to work hard. Slowly but steadily we take control of the match. In game 2 and 3, we win with large scores, but we really had to fight for it! On to the quarterfinals! Again, a well-deserved massage and then off to the hotel. In the evening I go back to the hall to watch some games, but I’m going away in time to prepare for tomorrow’s match.

Friday, April 25! The day of the quarter-finals, the day that we can score a medal. Once before at the European Championships 2010 in Manchester I played a quarterfinal. Then of the men’s doubles which we lost. Today I remember how I felt before that match. I ‘m pretty tense but focused. After breakfast I go to the training hall for a light workout. The feeling is good. In the afternoon we analyze our opponents again with our coach Kim. We play against the Russian pair Durkin / Vislova . They performed very well in the first two rounds and apparently they are in great shape. While analyzing we find some interesting points to reckon with and to keep in mind during the encounter. Then I go back to the hotel room and I skype with my parents. Although I see them up-side-down because of a setting problem it is nice to speak to them. It brings me some tranquility. I have a shower, brush my teeth and get the bus to the hall. Before I get there I start feeling hungry again. What’s this? I’ve just eaten! We are now about an hour before the game, but should I have to go on court feeling hungry? I run to the canteen of the hall and order a light pasta with some vegetables. After this meal I am ready for the warming-up! Meanwhile my nerves made way for an adrenaline rush. We may enter the court.

The first game is a rather equal battle. We are 13-15 behind when we get the chance to take and hold the lead. We win the first game. In the second game it is the other way round. From a score of 8-8 we are and stay behind all the time and we lose by 16-21. The third game, it will be all or nothing! Again we face an arrears at 7-10 but we come back by winning the last four points before the interval. Our coaches dot the i’s and cross the t’s and immediately we grab two more points. The Russians fight back and we have to allow them a 13-13 score. Every now and then Kim calls from the baseline “Close the gap”. He wants me to stay close behind Samantha because the Russians don’t play up too much and if we stand side by side we have a better coverage of the net. This tactic works out well and we score four points in a row. It turns out to be the deciding set, because the Russians don’t really get a chance anymore. We arrive at 19-14 and then 20-17. We lose the first matchpoint but the second one is home. The hall is dead silent, but we go bonkers. I have not seen the pictures yet, but I believe I have ran where ever I could run. I was as happy as could be. We give each other a hug, shake hands with opponents and officials and hug the coaches and masseur Gerrit! We have just secured a medal at the European Championships. It’s great to get congratulations from international colleague players and coaches. Everyone refers to Samantha’s injury and tells me that this win is so very well deserved. I radiate joy! On Gerrit’s massage table I finally settle down a bit. Back at the hotel I read all the posts, I skype a few times and finally I fall asleep with a big smile on my face, remembering the best day of my entire badminton career so far.

Saturday, April 26, I wake up with an unpleasant feeling. I have a cold and my stomach is playing up. I eat a little bit, but go right back into bed. In the afternoon we have a meeting with the coaches to analyze the first seeded Danes Fischer Nielsen/Pedersen, our opponents in the semi-finals. Obviously we are the underdog but also this pair has a few weaknesses. After the analysis Rune Massing tells us that we have to take into account that we may have to fly home that same evening when we lose and thus miss the medal ceremony on Sunday. Our visa expire at midnight on the 26th and in Russia you really do not want to get trouble. Rune has been busy all night and day to try and find a way out but it doesn’t look good. There aren’t many options left. My heart sinks into my boots. This can’t be true! We go back to our rooms with the instruction to focus on the match to come. Easier said than done.
Just before we leave for the hall we get the message that they found a solution and that we can stay. Our visa have been extended till the 29th. At least one burden less but I still feel not good at all.
The match begins and in no time we are facing a 0-9 arrears. Pedersen’s service is superb. When we score our first point we get applause from the spectators. It makes us laugh.
Eventually we still play quite some nice rallies, but obviously the Danes are a size too big. We lose the semi-finals, but win a bronze medal. The first mixed doubles medal in 12 years for The Netherlands. In the evening I thank the coaches and masseur for their outstanding and very professional guidance this week in which I, as a player, was once again very well prepared for the matches I had to play. In my already pretty long badminton career this is by far the best guided tournament week ever! Rune and Kim are a twofoldness. It shows and you feel it when you are on court. To be able to perform this is of great importance for a player!

Sunday, April 27. The day of the finals. I still do not feel well, but the thought that I will be on the stand later that day keeps me going. In the afternoon I watch the finals. It’s especially nice to see the Russians win the men’s doubles. A great achievement to win a championship in your home country. After this final match the medal ceremonies are scheduled and we are the first to take the stand. I am so very proud when I see the Dutch flag hoisted between three Danish flags. It’s a wonderful moment! After the ceremony we take a lot of pictures and talk with some people. With a wonderful feeling we go back to the hotel. At night we fly to Istanbul and from there back home where we arrive around 2:00 PM. At the airport we are met by photographer Rene Lagerwaard, his girlfriend Marije and dog Bobby. We make some nice pictures and that’s how we conclude the most intense, most tiring, most emotional but also the most amazing week of my badminton career (so far). This I will never forget and I mean never!

The Olympics: Preview mixed doubles

(27 juli 2012)

The male half of the 2008 golden mixed doubles combination, Lee Yong Dae, will this time try to defend his Olympic title. He is only 23 years old but already now one of the greatest double players ever. Together with Ha Jung Eun he will try to equal what the Chinese Zhang Jun and Gao Ling did before: winning two consecutive Olympic Games. It’s going to be a hell of a task for two reasons. Firstly Ha has a very moderate service (8 out of 10 services are flickservices) and secondly there are many contenders for the medals. Out of the 5 events the outcome of the mixed doubles is the most difficult one to predict.

The Beijing silver lady winner Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia will alongside Tontowi Ahmad try to end one step higher than last time. They have proven that they are able to play well in England by winning the 2012 All England.

Naturally also China has likely candidates and based on the draw they may even have two finalists in the ranks. The number one of the world and World Champions Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei will do their utmost to take that golden medal back home to China. But also Chen Xu and Ma Jin, widely feared for their very hard smashes in combination with subtle net playing, will fight for the highest honour.

Besides we have no less than 5 European pairs in this competition of whom the Danish Fisher and Pedersen are the ones with the highest seeding. They are in one group with the European Champions Mateusiak and Zieba. At the European Championships the Danish lost dramatically from the unleashed Poles. I expect to see both pairs in the quarter finals.

The 3 other European pairs are in Group A. Nice detail is that we will have a repeat of the World Championship final between the British Adcock and Bankier and the Chinese Zhang and Zhao. The latter combination won this match easily, but in the next matches the British have shown to be able to beat them. In short: the mixed doubles tournament is going to be one big spectacle!!!

Prediction:

Gold: Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir

Silver: Robert Mateusiak/Nadia Zieba

Bronze: Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei

Laatste 16 bij EK

(19 april 2012)

Decision on the mixed doubles

(20 november 2011)

There is little news these days. This calendar year I won’t play international tournaments anymore due to the top sport budget exceedance and I am not able to finance anymore tournaments myself. Of course this is very annoying because now we restrict ourselves to training at Papendal while international tournaments are very important to find out where you stand compared to others.

But like Johan Cruijff always says: “It’s simple, every disadvantage has it’s advantage”. So maybe it is not that bad at all to have an extra long training period and to start the new year in a top condition. And this new year I will start with two events. As you know the past months we have experimented with the mixed doubles combinations and now our coach has cut the knot. Until the summer of 2012 I will definitely play together with Samantha Barning. This means that we will play 5 or 6 tournaments together in which we can show our performance. In the summer of 2012 all mixed doubles will be evaluated on the progress they have made. Then it will be decided if the pairs can be maintained or, if necessary, have to be changed for the next period of two years. In the summer of 2014 it should be clear which pairs can actually have a shot at an Olympic ticket. It is an ambitious plan of the technical staff and I really hope that it will deliver new successes in the mixed doubles. At least I will work hard, together with Samantha, to attain this objective.

This weekend we have two league matches. I will write a report on those matches later on.

SILVER WITH A GOLDEN LINING

(19 september 2011)

Yesterday evening I came back from Leuven Belgium where I played the Belgian International. It was a fantastic event!

For me the tournament started last Friday with a mixed doubles. My occasional partner Selena Piek and I defeated a Belgian pair in two fast games. A few hours later Dave and I met two Scottish guys who we had never met before. As they had good results in the past we were warned and we played at full strength. We both were highly concentrated and the Scots didn’t stand a chance. With 9 and 11 we finished them off in 22 minutes. It gave us a good feeling.

In the evening 2 more matches were scheduled. First the mixed double against the 4th seeded pair Chrisnanta and Neo from Singapore. These two are in the top 35 of the world ranking and they have achieved very good results the past months. In the first game we were completely outplayed and we didn’t have an answer to their way of playing. In the second game it was the same story until the score 1-7 when we changed our tactics and managed to get control. We came alongside, survived a match point and finally we won the game. In the third game we stayed close to our opponents till 18 all. Then we scored three magnificent points and won the match. A great boost and a nice win.

Almost immediately after this match Dave and I had a confrontation with 2 young French guys. This time Dave couldn’t get the right rhythm and we lost the first game narrowly. The second game, which we won, went a lot better and in the third game we ran off after the break and placed ourselves in the quarter finals with a 21-11 score. This match had a positive aspect. As a pair we didn’t play well but we still managed to convert the match in a win which we wouldn’t have done a couple of months ago.

Saturday morning Selena and I met 2 Germans in the quarter finals and we won quite easily in two games. So on to the semi finals. In the men’s doubles it did not work out the same. The first seed Polish Cwalina and Logosz were the better pair. But also in this long lasting match were very good moments again.

Then the semi final against the first seeded Danish pair Kolding and Houmann, 22nd on the world ranking and with a number of tournaments won on their record. We knew in advance that this match should be a tactical one. In the first game we had no problem but in the second the Danes played very cleverly and they outplayed us. In the final game at a score of 14-14 we managed to take some distance and we won the match. I was ever so glad! Again a fantastic win! Playing together for the first time and making it to the finals of a Challenge tournament is quite an achievement I had not counted on with the tough draw we had.

Sunday we played the final against Triyachart and Yao from Singapore. A month ago they were in the quarter finals of the World Championships. So a special pair and apart from that they had not yet lost a game in Leuven yet. We started our match very well. For some time we kept a small lead but finally our opponents got 5 game points which we all deflected. At our first game point we pitched at 25-23. In the second and the third game we managed to keep up till 7-7 but then the Singaporeans took the lead and from that moment on they didn’t allow us anymore to come even close even though we kept on playing well. We have extracted everything that was in it but they were just a bit better than we were. After the match and the prize ceremony we were disappointed but finally we were glad and proud because of the way of playing and the magnificent wins.

We enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere and décor of the hall. My compliments to the organization because it all looked very professional. The finals were broadcasted live on TV and had been sold to seven Asian countries among which China, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Today I enjoy a day off to recover. The coming period I will focus on the Dutch Open to be held mid October in Almere. Apart from the men’s doubles with Dave I will play the mixed doubles with my former partner Ilse Vaessen.

World championships preview of the matches of Dutch players: Mixed doubles

(4 augustus 2011)

In the mixed doubles event we have two entries. Jacco Arends and Selena Piek who both make their Worlds debut and Dave Khodabux with Samantha Barning.

Jacco and Selena have a good draw. In the first round the Peruvians Pacheco and Rivero are their opponent, a pair which is unknown to them. Watching the positions on the world ranking this confrontation should be a thriller. The Peruvians are on place 57 and our countrymen on 56 but the Peruvians owe their position mainly to South American tournaments while Jacco and Selena owe theirs to good results in the much stronger EBU circuit. Based on this evaluation I believe that this first round shouldn’t be much of a problem for the Dutch pair. If they survive they encounter in round 2 the winners of the All England 2011, the Chinese Xu Chen and Ma Jin. A nice and instructive experience for this young pair.

Dave and Samantha will meet the Germans Schöttler and Marinello. Although Dave and Samantha fell back to the 79th position on the world ranking while their opponents take place 36 I still think that this could be a nice and thrilling match provided Samantha is completely fit. The past weeks she wasn’t able to fully prepare herself for the championships because of shoulder problems. Both pairs played against each other once before at the European Championships in 2010. At that time our Eastern neighbours won in two games. So time for revenge. If they win the super strong Chinese pair Tao and Qing is waiting for them in the second round.

A teachable German Open

(3 maart 2011)

In the meantime I am back at Papendal. The German Open is finished, for me. It were instructive days. Both in mixed and in men’s doubles Korean top players were our opponents.

Monday afternoon after the training I was called by the technical director that Paulien and I had been moved to the qualification tournament. Before, we were at the waiting list as neither of us still has a ranking in the mixed doubles anymore. Two places had come free, one right in the top of the schedule where there were not too strong couples or right at the bottom of the schedule between Korean and Japanese players. We ended up in the bottom part!
Our opponents were Shin Baek Choel and Ha Jung Eun. They are not a couple together and therefore also not mentioned on the world ranking, but both of them belong to the world-top. Shin won the mixed doubles in the Asian Games only a few months ago and Ha was playing the finals of the All England two years ago.

The first set we could handle quite well. The tactics we had worked well and there were good rallies. A few inaccurate movements made us loose the first game. The second game we did not start well. In the break we were 11-3 behind. But after that we picked up the way we were playing in the first set again, but because of too much difference we did not manage to get closer to them anymore.

The next day at 6 pm the men’s doubles had to be played against Jung and Lee. Of course I was well prepared and I had been watching their Youtube matches over and over again. The first game went very well. We played at our best. Only 4 or 5  service mistakes from our side made that the Koreans got their points quite easily. The rallies were very good, but in the end we lost the first game with 17-21. In the second game we came too much behind and it became clear why they are nr. 3 of the world and we are nr 44. The rallies were still good, but we did not manage to score many more points. In half an hour it was over and done with. Afterwards my coach and I had a talk about this match (Dave was not there as he still had to play the mixed) and we both were very satisfied!

This morning at Papendal I trained hard again for the next two tournaments. I hope tomorrow there will be some time to play matches as most of the dutch players will be finished in Mülheim and will be back home again.
Then a nice weekend off and on Monday we will be leaving for Birmingham to go to -in my opinion- one of the most beautiful tournaments. It’s one of my favourites: the All England.

I will try to keep you informed.
