A win in the League and Estonia coming up

Yesterday evening we played our last home match in the League and my former club van Zijderveld from Amstelveen was our opponent. Quite unexpectedly it became a big win with a 7-1 score.

In the men’s doubles Chris Bruil was my partner. We made a slow start and we were too passive and consequently we lost the first game with a big difference. In the second game we got a better control although we still played too defensively. In all 3 games I have smashed 5 times at the most. On the other side of the net Lester Oey and Robin Tabeling, our opponents, were smashing like hell but they didn’t manage to really get through our defence. So the second and third game could be decided in our favour without getting at risk.

On the other court the ladies doubles was also won, in 2 games. After the two men’s singles had been won by Duinwijck and also Akvile Stapusaityte had decided her ladies single in her favour we had taken a very comfortable lead. In the second ladies singles substitute Annemiek Groenewoud did her utmost versus Alida Chen. Especially in the second game she offered good resistance but she couldn’t keep Alida from scoring a point for van Zijderveld which at the end turned out to be the only one.

The mixed doubles of Eva Krab and myself versus Norbert van Barneveld en Georgy van Soerland was not exactly spectacular. There were hardly any rallies and half way in both games we had a comfortable lead. With two times 21-14 we won this match. On the other court the confrontation between Betty Timmerman and Chris Bruil and Elisa Piek and Robin Tabeling was much more interesting. After having lost the first game Betty and Chris got a better focus and won the second game. The decisive third game still became an exciting one but the Duinwijck pair finally drew the longest straw.

So a 7-1 win but it didn’t effect the score in the League very much. Duinwijck is still third and will travel to Hoensbroek next week with a severely battered team for the last regular match versus Victoria. A number of my team members as well as myself will then be in Estonia for the first EBU tournament of this season. Next Thursday we’ll fly from Schiphol to Tallinn via Frankfurt. Last year it was extremely cold in this former Soviet country and, to be honest, I hope for a nice sunny 25 Celsius this time but I am afraid I will be disappointed.

This is going to be the first tournament with my new mixed doubles partner Samantha Barning. During the trainings in the past weeks we played some very good matches together and I am really looking forward to playing an international tournament again after 2 months of purely training at Papendal. Ready for week 2 with Xu

Last week Xu Huaiwen started at Papendal and her first training sessions were very good!

Monday afternoon I was quite excited when I entered the hall, but I didn’t see Xu. I was a bit disappointed when I heard that she had arrived but first had to make some important arrangements for her stay here in Holland. But on Tuesday she made her appearance and her training sessions this first week were excellent. It had been a long time since we practised specific strokes like e.g. a deceptive dropshot, but we also trained briefly and intensely specific ways of playing doubles. Anyway I was quite exhausted at Friday noon and that was a good sign.

Friday night we finished the season with the van Zijderveld team with a dinner and bowling match in Amstelveen. It was a big and fun group because all the reservists of last season had been invited too. I was 8 years old when I bowled for the last time so the first round was a disaster. After some expert tips from my teammates I started round 2 with a strike followed by numerous spares. I actually started to like it. A pity that we had only one hour to play!

Today a new week at Papendal will start in which we will begin to prepare ourselves for the Velo Dutch International which  is scheduled in 10 days from now. After this sunny weekend I am ready for it.

Op naar week 2 met Xu

Afgelopen week is Xu Huaiwen begonnen op Papendal en haar eerste trainingen waren erg goed!

Maandagmiddag kwam ik enigzins opgewonden de hal binnen, maar ik zag geen Xu. Een beetje teleurgesteld was ik wel toen ik hoorde dat ze al wel geland was maar dat ze nog wat belangrijke zaken moest regelen voor haar verblijf. Vanaf dinsdag was zij er gelukkig wel en haar trainingen van afgelopen week waren erg goed. Sinds lange tijd lag de nadruk weer eens op het trainen van specifieke slagen als bijvoorbeeld een ingehouden dropshot, maar er werd ook kort en fel getraind in specifieke dubbelvormen. In ieder geval was ik vrijdagmiddag om 12u behoorlijk uitgeput en dat was een goed teken!

Vrijdagavond hebben we met het team van Van Zijderveld het seizoen afgesloten met een etentje en een partijtje bowlen in de Kegel in Amstelveen. We waren met een grote en gezellige groep want ook alle invallers van het afgelopen seizoen waren uitgenodigd. Ik denk dat ik ongeveer 8 jaar was toen ik de laatste keer bowlde, dus het viel in de eerste ronde niet bepaald mee. Na wat tips van mijn kundige teamgenoten begon ik ronde 2 gelijk met een strike en vlogen ook de spares mij om de oren en begon ik het zowaar leuk te vinden. Jammer dat we maar een uurtje mochten!

Vandaag begint weer een nieuwe week op Papendal waarin de voorbereidingen zullen starten voor het Velo Dutch International toernooi dat over anderhalve week in Wateringen begint. Na dit zonnige weekend ben ik er weer helemaal klaar voor!

Fifth place for Van Zijderveld

Yesterday night I played the last league match of the season with my club van Zijderveld against league leader Duinwijck. In our own hall De Meerkamp we lost with 2-6 and this means that we concluded the season with a fifth place.

We started the competition well. Lester and I played against Koen and Ruud. Using the right tactics and with good teamwork we managed to win this match in 2 games. Lester also won his single but the other matches were decided in favour of Duinwijck. After the 8-0 defeat of last month it was good to score 2 points this time.

Before the start of this season we knew that it would be a kind of in between year. Four important players had left the club and a group of very young players educated at the club was ready to make their appearance in the first team. These young players have performed excellently and they have a perfect base to grow further in the club. I am very proud of that. With a lot of further investments in this group van Zijderveld will be able to harvest again in some five years. I personnally regret that I could only play very few matches at the beginning of the season, but you can’t do much to a nasty knee injury. Still I had a very good time at the club once again and I believe that this team made the best of it.

Of course I wish Duinwijck, Velo, Amersfoort and Almere a lot of success in the play offs. May the best one win.

Next week the last tournament out of a series of three is scheduled: the Swiss Open in Basel. This Grand Prix Gold tournament also has the best participants. Wednesday evening we play our first match against the numbers 1 of France so I hope for a good result. I believe we have internet at our hotel so I keep you informed.

5e plaats voor Van Zijderveld

Gisteravond heb ik met het team van Van Zijderveld Amstelveen de laatste wedstrijd van het seizoen gespeeld tegen koploper Duinwijck. In de eigen Meerkamp werd het een 2-6 nederlaag en daarmee sluiten we het seizoen af als nummer 5 van Nederland.

We begonnen de wedstrijd goed. Lester en ik speelden tegen Koen en Ruud. Door goed spel en de juiste tactiek toe te passen wonnen we deze wedstrijd in twee games. Lester won ook zijn single, maar de overige wedstrijden gingen naar de Haarlemse club. Na de 8-0 van vorige maand nu dus twee punten kunnen pakken en dat is gewoon goed!

Voorafgaande aan dit seizoen wisten we dat het een soort tussenjaar zou worden. Vier belangrijke spelers waren vertrokken en er stonden hele jonge spelers uit de eigen opleiding klaar om hun opwachting te maken in het eerste. Deze jonge spelers hebben het voortreffelijk gedaan en er is voor hen allemaal een goede basis om door te groeien binnen de vereniging en daar ben ik trots op. Het zal de komende jaren investeren worden zodat Van Zijderveld over een jaar of 5 weer kan oogsten. Persoonlijk vind ik het erg jammer dat ik aan het begin van het seizoen zo weinig heb kunnen spelen, maar aan een vervelende knieblessure valt niet veel te doen. Toch heb ik weer een erg goed seizoen gehad bij de club en denk dat we er als spelersgroep het maximale uit hebben gehaald!

Natuurlijk wens ik Duinwijck, Velo, Almere en Amersfoort veel succes in de playoffs. Dat de beste maar mag winnen!

Aanstaande week staat het laatste toernooi uit de serie van drie op het programma: de Swiss Open in Basel. Dit Grand Gold toernooi is weer erg sterk bezet. We spelen woensdagavond tegen de nrs 1 van Frankrijk dus ik hoop op een goed resultaat! Volgens mij heb ik in het hotel in Basel wel internet dus ik zal jullie op de hoogte houden!
