A win at my former club

Yesterday evening the away match versus my former club van Zijderveld Amstelveen was scheduled. For me more or less a home match because I have played for this club 5 years and with much pleasure.

In the men’s doubles Koen Ridder and I won quite easy from Virgil Soeroredjo and Joris van Soerland, my former club coach. Also the ladies doubles was won by Duinwijck in 2 games. Eva Krab played a good single match versus Linda Chen, but in the third game she had to accept the superiority of Linda mainly because of a lack of single rhythm. Also both men’s singles were lost. Erik Meijs was defeated by Lester Oey in three games and Jerry Natenstedt played an unfortunate match versus Virgil. As Monique van der Woude, her opponent in the ladies single, couldn’t play because of a knee injury, Karina de Wit didn’t have to play and got her point “free of charge”. At this stage of the meeting it meant an intermediate score of 3-3.

The two mixed doubles should make the difference. In the first match Eva Krab and I played against the married couple van Soerland. With Georgy I played so many mixed doubles matches in the past that it was a kind of strange to have her as an opponent now. Eva and I managed well to keep the pressure on them and, in spite of the fact that we took a big lead in both games, we stayed focussed. We scored the forth point by winning with 21-13 and 21-14. Finally Koen Ridder and substitute Betty Timmerman – Krab took care of the winning point. They defeated their adversaries in two games also, putting the final score on 5-3 in the advantage of Duinwijck. In the league we are now sharing the second place with van Zundert Velo one point behind Amersfoort which managed to win all 8 points this weekend.

Next week the ninth duel is scheduled. On Saturday evening we’ll meet BC Victoria at home. The coming week I will also play the Bitburger Open in Saarbrücken Germany. Dave and I have an tough draw because already in the first round we’ll meet the third seeded Germans Kindervater and Schöttler. Last year at this tournament we lost from them in the semi finals in three games. These Germans have had an outstanding year so far and they have been keeping a steady 15^th place in the world ranking. It is going to be a hard match, but….there are always chances! Winst bij m’n oude club

Gisteravond stond de uitwedstrijd tegen mijn oude club Van Zijderveld Amstelveen op het programma. Voor mij een halve thuiswedstrijd, want ik heb 5 jaar lang met veel plezier voor deze vereniging gespeeld.

Koen en ik wonnen eenvoudig van Virgil Soeroredjo en Joris van Soerland, mijn voormalige clubcoach. Ook de damesdubbel ging in twee games naar Duinwijck. Eva speelde een goede enkelpartij tegen Linda Chen, maar het gebrek aan single ritme brak haar in de derde game op. Ook beide mannenenkels gingen verloren. Erik verloor van Lester Oey en Jerry speelde een ongelukkige wedstrijd tegen Virgil. Doordat Karina haar single cadeau kreeg vanwege een knieblessure van tegenstander Monique van der Woude kwam de tussenstand op 3-3.

Eva en ik speelden tegen het echtpaar van Soerland. Vreemd om nu eens tegenover Georgy te staan nadat we zoveel wedstrijden samen gespeeld hebben in het verleden. We hielden de druk er goed op en bleven geconcentreerd spelen ondanks grote voorsprongen in beide games. Met 21-13 en 21-14 wisten wij het vierde punt te scoren. Omdat ook Koen en invalster Betty Timmerman hun gemengddubbel in twee games wisten te winnen, kwam de einduitslag op 3-5 voor Duinwijck. Hierdoor staan we nu op een gedeelde tweede plaats, samen met Van Zundert Velo en één punt achter Amersfoort die dit weekend met 8-0 won.

Volgende week staat het 9e duel op het programma. We spelen zaterdagavond thuis tegen BC Victoria. Ook speel ik deze week de Bitburger Open in Saarbrücken. We hebben niet lekker geloot, want we spelen al in de eerste ronde tegen de als derde geplaatste Duitsers Kindervater en Schöttler. Vorig jaar speelden wij in de halve finales tegen elkaar en verloren we in drie games maar de Duitsers hebben een topjaar gehad en staan steady in de top 15 van de wereld. Het zal een lastige opgave worden, maar er zijn altijd kansen! Het toernooi is te volgen via toernooi.nl en natuurlijk zal ik iedereen via de site en Twitter op de hoogte houden van mijn belevenissen!

Van Zundert Velo vs Duinwijck: a draw

The cracker match between van Zundert Velo and Duinwijck has remained undecided last night. In Wateringen it became 4-4. As Amersfoort defeated Roosteren with 8-0 there are now three teams leading the league.

In two games Koen Ridder and I won from Dennis van Daalen de Jel and Rikkert Suijkerland, but the ladies doubles went to Velo, also in two games. In the men’s single Jerry Natenstedt played very well again and he defeated Jim Middelburg. Our substitute lady player Annemiek Groenewoud couldn’t cope with Myke Halkema. Despite much effort she lost in two games. This brought us to an intermediate score of 2-2.

Erik Meijs didn’t play his best match versus Dennis van Daalen de Jel. He didn’t even come close to winning a game just because of too many own faults. Karina de Wit played an exhausting match versus Soraya de Visch Eijbergen. After having lost the first game she managed to win both the second and third in the extension. She scored an important point putting the intermediate score on 3-3.

Both mixed doubles were shared. Eva Krab and I played a good match against the champions of the Danish Junior tournament Russell Muns and Myke Halkema. We won in two straight games but Koen and Karina had much trouble with Rikkert Suijkerland and Lisa Malaihollo and they had to allow them the win. This led to the 4-4 final result.

Next week we have a full training schedule and we are going to prepare ourselves for the Bitburger Open in Saarbrücken. As the Badminton Association has no more funds left the participation has to be paid by ourselves. Of course this is very annoying but Dave and I believe that it is of great importance to keep our tournament rhythm.

But before we go to Germany there is another league match to play next Saturday. Then we will meet my former club van Zijderveld. I am looking forward to it and after this match you will find a report on my site again.

Fifth place for Van Zijderveld

Yesterday night I played the last league match of the season with my club van Zijderveld against league leader Duinwijck. In our own hall De Meerkamp we lost with 2-6 and this means that we concluded the season with a fifth place.

We started the competition well. Lester and I played against Koen and Ruud. Using the right tactics and with good teamwork we managed to win this match in 2 games. Lester also won his single but the other matches were decided in favour of Duinwijck. After the 8-0 defeat of last month it was good to score 2 points this time.

Before the start of this season we knew that it would be a kind of in between year. Four important players had left the club and a group of very young players educated at the club was ready to make their appearance in the first team. These young players have performed excellently and they have a perfect base to grow further in the club. I am very proud of that. With a lot of further investments in this group van Zijderveld will be able to harvest again in some five years. I personnally regret that I could only play very few matches at the beginning of the season, but you can’t do much to a nasty knee injury. Still I had a very good time at the club once again and I believe that this team made the best of it.

Of course I wish Duinwijck, Velo, Amersfoort and Almere a lot of success in the play offs. May the best one win.

Next week the last tournament out of a series of three is scheduled: the Swiss Open in Basel. This Grand Prix Gold tournament also has the best participants. Wednesday evening we play our first match against the numbers 1 of France so I hope for a good result. I believe we have internet at our hotel so I keep you informed.

Terug van de All England

Gisteravond ben ik terug gekomen uit Birmingham waar deze week de 101ste All England plaats vindt. Er was geen internet in het hotel, vandaar dat ik nu pas een verslag kan schrijven.

Afgelopen dinsdag speelden we in de kwalificatie tegen het ijzersterke Koreaanse nieuwgevormde koppel Kim en Kim. Deze twee jonge gasten hadden vorige week de finale gehaald bij de German Open GP Gold en dat is geen misselijk resultaat. Een zware loting. We hadden echter wel de mogelijkheid om vooraf wat informatie over deze twee te pakken te krijgen. Vorige week was er een wedstrijd van hen opgenomen, ben ik op de halve finaledag nog naar Mülheim geweest om ze te bekijken en is Youtube tegenwoordig een erg makkelijke bron.

We begonnen sterk en konden tot 14-14 goed meekomen. Daarna slopen er fouten in ons spel en werd het verschil in niveau duidelijk. Deze jongens kunnen vanuit de service situatie en vanuit het halve veld naar het voorveld toe heel veel druk geven. Helaas kwamen wij er in het restant van de partij niet meer onderuit en we verloren met 15 en 13. Einde toernooi na één partijtje. Wel heb ik twee dagen erg veel mooie wedstrijden kunnen bekijken, verrassingen gezien maar vooral weer veel geleerd. De All England blijft nog steeds één van mijn twee favoriete toernooien en dat zal het denk ik altijd wel blijven!

Vanavond spelen we met Van Zijderveld de laatste wedstrijd van het seizoen tegen Duinwijck. Duinwijck heeft aan 3 punten genoeg om de nr 1 positie te houden en wij eindigen als vijfde. Ik hoop dat we dit seizoen op een goede manier kunnen afsluiten!

One lost, one draw

The double match weekend is behind us. A big loss against Duinwijck and a draw against Amersfoort.

Last night there was little to gain in the hall of Duinwijck. The home team overclassed ours and took the maximum number of points. This afternoon against Amersfoort we had better chances. Lester and I won the men’s double from Jelle and Joely in three games. Each team won a ladies single and a men’s single match. It was a pleasant surprise to see Linda win from Gayle because in the first encounter Gayle still was the strongest. Unfortunately Hans had an off day and he lost from Vincent de Vries. Both teams also won a mixed double: making the final score 4-4.

With one more league match to play Van Zijderveld’s position is and will remain number 5 which means that for the first time in many years it will not participate in the play offs for the national title. The four clubs in the play offs will be Van Zundert Velo, Duinwijck, Amersfoort and Almere. Our last league match will be in March again against Duinwijck.

Tomorrow afternoon the selection for the European Championships for Mixed teams will get together at the Novotel in Amsterdam. We’ll have a training session in the hall between 3 and 5 pm and after that we we will “open” the tournament with a nice dinner in our capital city. Tuesday evening at 7 pm we’ll meet Iceland in our first encounter. Of course I will try to keep you informed during this event.

Verlies en gelijkspel

Het dubbelweekend zit erop. Verlies tegen Duinwijck en een gelijkspel tegen Amersfoort.

Gisteravond was er weinig eer te behalen in de Duinwijckhal. De thuisploeg was gewoon veel beter dan ons team en ze pakten de maximale winst. Vanmiddag tegen Amersfoort zat er gelukkig meer in. Lester en ik wonnen de herendubbel van Jelle en Joely in drie games. De enkelspelen werden verdeeld. Elk team won een mannen – en vrouwenenkel. Goed was de overwinnig van Linda tegen Gayle, want tijdens de eerste wedstrijd ging de winst nog naar Amersfoort. Helaas had Hans een mindere dag en verloor van Vincent de Vries. Ook de gemengddubbels werden verdeeld, waardoor de einduitslag op 4-4 kwam te staan. Met nog één competitieronde te gaan is Van Zijderveld zeker van de 5e plek en zal het voor het eerst sinds jaren niet mee strijden om de landstitel. De playoffs gaan gespeeld worden door Duinwijck, Van Zundert Velo, Almere en Amersfoort. Ons rest nog één laatste thuiswedstrijd, wederom tegen Duinwijck.

Morgenmiddag wordt de EK selectie om 14u in het Novotel in Amsterdam verwacht. Van 15u-17u zullen wij een training afwerken in de wedstrijdhal en daarna zullen we het toernooi ”openen” met een gezellig dinner in onze hoofdstad. Dinsdagavond om 19u staat de eerste wedstrijd van het Nederlands Team op het programma tegen IJsland. Natuurlijk zal ik weer proberen jullie op de hoogte te houden tijdens dit evenement!

Two league matches coming up

Last Tuesday I felt good enough to return to Papendal for the afternoon training which didn’t go very well as I still felt myself rather weak. After a good night’s rest I had regained my usual energy. The new power exercises have done their job because I feel every single muscle in my upper legs. We have played a number of matches to prepare ourselves for the European Team Championships next week in Amsterdam and Thursday afternoon I had to report at the Hospital in Ede for a medical check up by Dr. Vergouwen, our sports physician. We have discussed some particular power and stability exercises to further develop and improve my physical performance. The over all check up was fine and I have a healthy top sport body.

This weekend is the last one of this season with two scheduled league matches. On Saturday evening we’ll meet Duinwijck (for me in my back yard) and on Sunday BC Amersfoort is our opponent in our own hall in Amstelveen. Both matches will be difficult but we’ll do our best to collect as many points as possible.

Productive double match weekend

The double match weekend has come to an end. Yesterday we won against Victoria with 5-3 and today we defeated Roosteren with 6-2. Both matches in our own hall The Meerkamp.

Yesterday evening I played the men’s double with Hans van Os. We had never played together before, so we started blank. It soon was clear that our opponents were not able to really fight back and we could finish this match really fast. Also the mixed double, together with Georgy, was won. Unfortunately the ladies double and both the ladies singles were lost making the final result 5-3.

This afternoon the next team from Limburg came to visit us. They were a bit confused about the starting time but once the team had arrived we could start the match with half an hour delay. This time I played the men’s double with Lester and in a well concentrated match we managed to score the point. Also the ladies double was won. Hans played a very good single but again the two ladies singles were lost. And then it was Lester’s turn. In his single he met the Belgian Jente Paesen who is serving Limburg. After one rally Jente gave up which meant an easy point for Lester.

The mixed double with Georgy went well in the first game but in the second we lost our concentration. Fortunately we managed to get back on track just in time and we decided the match in our favour with 22-20. The second mixed double was also a van Zijderveld point bringing the final result to 6-2 on the score board.

Tomorrow I will go back to Papendal for another, interesting training week. The selection for the European Championships for National Teams will be announced and next weekend the National Championships will be played in Almere. So more news to come next week.

Vruchtbaar dubbelweekend

Het dubbele competitie weekend zit erop. Gisteren wonnen we met 5-3 van Victoria uit Hoensbroek en vanmiddag werd Roosteren in de Meerkamp met 6-2 verslagen.

Gisteravond speelde ik de herendubbel samen met Hans van Os. We hadden nog nooit eerder samen gespeeld, dus we gingen er blanco in. Al snel werd duidelijk dat de jongens van Victoria niet echt een vuist konden maken en in een snelle wedstrijd wonnen wij deze partij. Ook het gemengddubbelspel, samen met Georgy, wisten we in winst om te zetten. Helaas gingen de damesdubbel en beide damesenkels naar Victoria waardoor de einduitslag 5-3 werd.

Vanmiddag kwam de volgende Limburgse tegenstander op bezoek. Er was bij hen wat verwarring over de begintijd, maar toen het team eenmaal gearriveerd was kon er gelukkig toch gespeeld worden. Vandaag speelde ik de herendubbel samen met Lester en in een degelijke wedstrijd konden wij het punt naar ons toe trekken. Ook de damesdubbel ging gewonnen. Hans speelde een sterke tweede enkel en wist die te winnen, maar helaas gingen beide damesenkels verloren. Lester mocht vervolgens de baan op tegen de Belg in Limburgse dienst Jente Paesen, maar Jente hield het na een gespeeld punt voor gezien en hielp Lester zo erg gemakkelijk aan zijn overwinning. De mix van Georgy en mij ging goed in de eerste game. In de tweede game verloren we onze concentratie maar we konden net op tijd het tij keren en wonnen de tweede game met 22-20. Het tweede gemengddubbelspel ging ook in twee games naar Van Zijderveld waardoor er een einduitslag van 6-2 op het scoreboard stond.

Morgen ga ik terug naar Papendal want er staat een nieuwe week te wachten. De EK selectie wordt bekend gemaakt en aankomend weekend staat het NK alweer voor de deur! Aankomende week volgt dus zeker meer nieuws!
