Selected for the European Championships

This afternoon at Papendal the selection was announced which will participate in the 2012 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships. The coach of the Dutch Badminton Association, Gerben Bruijstens, said that I and 9 other guys have been selected. I am very pleased and even more because 2 years ago in Poland I was not allowed to participate. At that time I still had a sponsoring contract with Carlton and the Dutch Association had just entered into a contract with Yonex. Consequently only players who could play with equipment from Yonex were sent to Warsaw. It was the biggest disappointment in my entire top sport career!
Fortunately this period lies behind us and we can now start focusing on this great tournament which will be held from 14 – 19 February in Amsterdam, my birth place. The other men in the team are:
Eric Pang, Dicky Palyama, Jordy Hilbink, Nick Fransman, Koen Ridder, Ruud Bosch, Dave Khodabux, Jacco Arends en Jelle Maas.
For the women’s team are selected:
Yao Jie, Judith Meulendijks, Patty Stolzenbach, Josephine Wentholt, Lotte Jonathans, Paulien van Dooremalen, Selena Piek, Iris Tabeling, Samantha Barning en Ilse Vaessen.
Eric, Dicky, Jie and Judith, who have no contract with the Dutch Association, have got a week to decide if they will accept the invitation. For the sake of Dutch Badminton I naturally hope  they will.

Nu wel geselecteerd

Vanmiddag werd op Papendal de selectie voor de EK mannen en vrouwenteams bekend gemaakt. Bondscoach Gerben Bruijstens deelde mede dat ik geselecteerd ben, samen met nog 9 andere jongens. Ik ben hier heel erg blij mee, vooral vanwege het feit dat ik er twee jaar geleden in Polen niet bij mocht zijn. Destijds had ik een Carlton contract terwijl Badminton Nederland een contract sloot met Yonex. Alleen Yonex spelers werden naar Warschau uitgezonden. Het was de grootste teleurstelling uit mijn topsportcarrière!
Gelukkig ligt die tijd nu achter mij en kunnen we ons gaan richten op dit ontzettend leuke toernooi dat dit jaar georganiseerd wordt in onze eigen hoofdstad en mijn geboorteplaats Amsterdam. De overige geselecteerde jongens zijn:
Eric Pang, Dicky Palyama, Jordy Hilbink, Nick Fransman, Koen Ridder, Ruud Bosch, Dave Khodabux, Jacco Arends en Jelle Maas.
Bij de vrouwen bestaat het team uit:
Yao Jie, Judith Meulendijks, Patty Stolzenbach, Josephine Wentholt, Lotte Jonathans, Paulien van Dooremalen, Selena Piek, Iris Tabeling, Samantha Barning en Ilse Vaessen.
Eric, Dicky, Jie en Judith hebben een week gekregen om te beslissen of ze mee willen doen. Uiteraard hoop ik voor het Nederlandse badminton dat ze de uitnodiging accepteren!

Russia too strong

Thursday evening we reached the quarterfinals by beating Switzerland in again a thrilling match: 3-2
The last match, the ladies doubles, brought us the winning point. Before this match, we had lost both single matches and we won the mixed and men’s doubles. Our girls had a tough time especially in the second game but they managed to win it with the score of 22-20.
Yesterday evening the quarterfinals were scheduled. Denmark – Poland, England – Bulgaria, Germany – France and Netherlands – Russia. When the draw was published I was a bit surprised about the team of Russia because they did not play with their best possible team. There were chances in mixed and men’s doubles and than we had to score another point somewhere. Unfortunately it did not come that far. Ruud and Lotte started really well, were leading 18-13 but did not manage to finish: 19-21. In the second game the Russians were simply better and we lost that game with bigger score: 0-1. Now it was clear that we hardly could not win this match because the single matches were coming up and their single players are very strong.
Rune fought very hard in the first game against Pukhov and gave him a tough time. He almost managed to win the first game but in the end it was the Russian who took home the game with 20-22. In the second game Pukhov was the better player and the 0-2 was on the scoreboard.
Patty played against Ella Diehl. In the first game she did not play well and lost the game quite fast. In the second game Patty managed to play much better and took a lead of 5 points. Unfortunately Ella started to make a comeback and she decided the match and the entire interland in the favour of Russia: 0-3. The Netherlands was beaten!
Of course we knew we could loose this match against Russia, but still it is disappointing and a shame that we are out of the competition now. But to be honest Russia has got a better team at the moment and because of that we can be proud of the fact we came into the quarterfinals and about our fighting spirit through out the entire week. I enjoyed it to score the final point against Lithuania and I am looking forward to the next tournament!

Rusland te sterk

Donderdagavond plaatsten we ons voor de kwartfinale door, Â in een wederom zeer spannende wedstrijd tegen Zwitserland, met 3-2 te winnen.
Pas in de laatste wedstrijd, de damesdubbel, werd het winnende punt binnen geslagen. Daarvoor waren beide enkelspelen verloren gegaan en de mix en herendubbel gewonnen. Onze dames hadden het vooral in de tweede game erg zwaar, maar gelukkig wonnen ze wel met 22-20!
Gisteravond stonden de kwartfinales op het programma. Denemarken – Polen, Engeland – Bulgarije, Duitsland – Frankrijk en Nederland – Rusland. Toen ook de opstelling van de Russen bekend werd gemaakt was ik best een beetje verbaasd, want ze lieten niet hun sterkste formatie spelen. Er lagen kansen in de mix en de herendubbels en dan moesten we nog ergens een puntje vandaan snoepen. Helaas kwam het niet zover. Ruud en Lotte begonnen goed en kwamen tegen het eind van de eerste game met 18-13 voor maar verloren die game toch nog met 19-21. In de tweede game waren de Russen beter en die game werd ruim verloren: 0-1. We wisten dat het nu heel moeilijk ging worden, omdat de herenenkel en damesenkel bij Rusland sterk bezet waren.
Rune vocht voor wat hij waard was tegen Pukhov, kon in de eerste game bijna voor een stunt zorgen, maar in de tweede game ging het kaarsje uit: 0-2.
Patty speelde een moeilijke wedstrijd tegen Ella Diehl. In de eerste game zat ze er niet lekker in en verloor die met 7-21. In de tweede game kwam Patty beter in haar spel en nam ze zelfs een voorsprong van 5 punten. Helaas wist ze dit niet vast te houden en Ella wist door te drukken en de partij en daarmee de gehele wedstrijd voor Rusland winnend af te sluiten: 0-3. Nederland lag eruit!
Natuurlijk hadden we er rekening mee gehouden, maar het blijft toch teleurstellend en vreselijk zonde dat we verloren hebben. Maar als we eerlijk zijn dan heeft Rusland nou eenmaal een sterker team dan wij op dit moment en daarom moeten wij trots zijn op de behaalde kwartfinale en de strijdvaardigheid die dit team de afgelopen week heeft laten zien. Ik heb zelf genoten en vond het erg leuk om het winnende punt tegen Litouwen binnen te slaan. Op naar het volgende toernooi!

Iceland and Lithuania defeated!

Tuesday evening the EC started with a match against Iceland. Only the woman singles was won by Iceland so the final score was 4-1 for the Netherlands. A good result! I did not play myself, but against Lithuania I had to play the men’s doubles match.
The match against Lithuania did not start as well as we had hoped for. Dave and Samantha played a match against themselves and that was a shame to see. It just was not their day and we were 0-1 behind. Patty came on court against Akvile in the woman singles. They are playing quite often against each other because Akvile is playing in the Dutch league. Patty took the first game easily but lost focus in the second, so a third game had to be played. The final game was won by Patty and we were all very happy about that fact: 1-1. Saber was up against Kestutis and the difference of strength of playing badminton was clear to see. He simply could not keep up: 1-2. The ladies doubles played by Iris and Selena came on court and they won the first game easily. In the second game things started to be more tight but eventually they took home the final score of 21-19: 2-2. In advance I had not expect to play the deciding match during my 18th interland, but I was ready for it. Luckily I managed to give a peptalk to Dave and it worked out. During the match it became clear that we would not get troubles playing our opponents. Within 20 minutes the match was over: 21-11 and 21-8. Final score: 3-2 for our team!
From the very first point until the last one we encouraged our teammates who were playing on court by yelling and it helped. We can be proud about the fact that we stayed very positive during the whole interland even though the first match was lost unexpectedly. It is a shame that there are always the same people who are grumbling…but anyway we are used to that by now. Tonight we are going to play very well to end 1st in our group and I have faith in that!

IJsland en Litouwen verslagen

Dinsdagavond begon het EK landenteams voor Nederland met een wedstrijd tegen IJsland. Alleen het vrouwenenkelspel werd verloren waardoor de einduitslag 4-1 werd voor Nederland. Een prima resultaat! Ik kwam zelf niet in actie, maar werd woensdagavond in de wedstrijd tegen Litouwen wel opgesteld in de herendubbel.
Die wedstrijd tegen Litouwen begon niet zoals we gedacht hadden. Dave en Samantha speelden voornamelijk tegen zichzelf en dat was naar om te zien. Het was gewoon niet hun dag en we kwamen met 0-1 achter. Toen kwam Patty de baan op tegen Akvile. Beide meiden spelen regelmatig tegen elkaar en kennen elkaar goed. Patty won de eerste game simpel, maar liet de tweede game aan Akvile. In de derde game stelde ze orde op zaken en stond de 1-1 op het scoreboard. Saber had de ondankbare taak om tegen Kestutis te spelen. Het krachtsverschil was duidelijk zichtbaar en helaas kon Saber nooit een vuist maken tegen het snelle spel van zijn tegenstander: 1-2. De damesdubbel van Selena en Iris ging de baan op en zij wonnen de eerste game ruim. In de tweede game bleef het tot het eind dicht bij elkaar, maar de Nederlandse meiden hielden hun hoofd koel en wonnen met 21-19: 2-2. Vooraf had ik niet gedacht dat ik in mijn 18e interland de beslissende partij zou moeten spelen, maar ik was er klaar voor. Gelukkig kon ik Dave weer aardig positief stemmen en we gingen er vol op! Al snel werd duidelijk dat deze partij naar ons ging en binnen 20 minuten was de klus geklaard: 21-11 en 21-8. Einduitslag: 3-2 voor Nederland.
Vanaf het eerste tot het laatste punt hebben we de spelers op de baan met de bekende spreekkoren luid aangemoedigd en dat was fijn voor degenen die op de baan stonden. We kunnen als team trots zijn dat we die positieve spirit ondanks het onverwachte verlies van de eerste wedstrijd hebben doorgezet. Jammer genoeg zijn er altijd weer de bekende zuurpruimen die moeten mekkeren en hun zegje willen doen, maar ach…dat zijn we zo langzamerhand wel gewend. Vanavond gaan we er als team weer keihard tegen aan om de winst in de groep veilig te stellen! Ik heb er alle vertrouwen in dat dit gaat lukken!

One lost, one draw

The double match weekend is behind us. A big loss against Duinwijck and a draw against Amersfoort.
Last night there was little to gain in the hall of Duinwijck. The home team overclassed ours and took the maximum number of points. This afternoon against Amersfoort we had better chances. Lester and I won the men’s double from Jelle and Joely in three games. Each team  won a ladies single and a men’s single match. It was a pleasant surprise to see Linda win from Gayle because in the first encounter Gayle still was the strongest. Unfortunately Hans had an off day and he lost from Vincent de Vries. Both teams also won a mixed double: making the final score 4-4.
With one more league match to play Van Zijderveld’s position is and will remain number 5 which means that for the first time in many years it will not participate in the play offs for the national title. The four clubs in the play offs will be Van Zundert Velo, Duinwijck, Amersfoort and Almere. Our last league match will be in March again against Duinwijck.
Tomorrow afternoon the selection for the European Championships for Mixed teams will get together at the Novotel in Amsterdam. We’ll have a training session in the hall between 3 and 5 pm and after that we we will “open” the tournament with a nice dinner in our capital city. Tuesday evening at 7 pm we’ll meet Iceland in our first encounter. Of course I will try to keep you informed during this event.

Selection EC for national teams announced

This afternoon at 2 PM our coach and trainer Gerben Bruijstens announced the selection for the European Championships for mixed National Teams to be played in Amsterdam in February. I have also been selected. As we were told the following 14 players will participate:
Single players:
Rune Massing, Saber Afif, Patty Stolzenbach, Josephine Wentholt
Doubles players:
Ruud Bosch, Koen Ridder, Dave Khodabux, Jorrit de Ruiter, Jacco Arenda, Paulien van Dooremalen, Lotte Jonathans, Selena Piek, Iris Tabeling and Samantha Barning.
Unfortunately the 4 best single players will not play because of the lasting dispute between the Dutch Badminton Association and Carlton. I regret this very much because this means that it will be more difficult to achieve a good result for Holland. With this team we’ll have to fight hard to survive the group stage and to qualify for the quarter finals in which Russia is likely to be the opponent.

Selectie EK landenteams bekend

Vanmiddag om 14u is de selectie voor de EK voor gemengde landenteams door bondscoach Gerben Bruijstens op Papendal bekend gemaakt en ik zit er ook bij. Naar we gehoord hebben zijn de volgende 14 spelers geselecteerd:
Singlespelers:
Rune Massing, Saber Afif, Patty Stolzenbach en Josephine Wentholt
Dubbelspelers:
Ruud Bosch, Koen Ridder, Dave Khodabux, Jorrit de Ruiter, Jacco Arends, Paulien van Dooremalen, Lotte Jonathans, Selena Piek, Iris Tabeling en Samantha Barning
Helaas spelen de vier sterkste singlespelers niet mee vanwege het Badminton Nederland/Carlton conflict. Ik vind dit erg jammer want hierdoor wordt het moeilijk om een mooi resultaat voor Nederland neer te zetten. Wij zullen met dit team moeten knokken in de groepsfase en hopelijk halen we dan de kwartfinale waarin hoogstwaarschijnlijk Rusland de tegenstander zal zijn!
