Final at the Yonex Dutch International in Wateringen!

This afternoon Dave and I will play the men’s doubles final at the Yonex Dutch International. Our match is the second one after 12 PM.

The Dutch International is the last EBU tournament before the Olympic qualification definitely ends and for some players/pairs there are still important points to be earned. This tournament immediately precedes the European Championships tournament which starts next Tuesday in Karlskrona, Sweden. For our Technical Staff this was the reason why the players going to Sweden were entered in the doubles only just to avoid playing too many matches. Up to now this worked out well with Dave and myself  in the men’s doubles final and with an entirely Dutch ladies doubles final.

Now back to my own matches. In the first round we met two Indonesians who like to play fast and hard but we had the right answer to their playing style. We won in two fast games. A nice detail was that I trained with one of the guys in 2009 at the Djarum Club in Jakarta when I participated in the Indonesian Open.

In the quarter final we played against the number one Belgium pair. Last year we lost against them, so we wanted a better match yesterday. We know them quite well because they are coming to our training centre pretty often to practise with us. Especially in the second game we played well and we beat them in straight games.

In the semi final Dhama Gunawi and Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki were our opponents. These two Indonesians play in the first Bundesliga in Germany. They like to make a show of each match and this is not easy for the ones they are playing against. If you want to cope with their style you have to be clever and you shall not be tempted to go along with their performance because if you do they send you to every corner of the court. Fortunately we were able to maintain our tactics all the way through the match and we managed to win this spectacular and for the public very entertaining match. So this afternoon we are in the finals!

Unfortunately I cannot report about this final right away because after the match we’ll have to hurry to catch our flight to Copenhagen from where we’ll travel by train and bus to Karlskrona. It’s going to be a long day but I am looking forward to it. If our hotel provides internet I will write a report next week on what happened today. So stay tuned.

Van Zundert Velo vs Duinwijck: a draw

The cracker match between van Zundert Velo and Duinwijck has remained undecided last night. In Wateringen it became 4-4. As Amersfoort defeated Roosteren with 8-0 there are now three teams leading the league.  

In two games Koen Ridder and I won from Dennis van Daalen de Jel and Rikkert Suijkerland, but the ladies doubles went to Velo, also in two games. In the men’s single Jerry Natenstedt played very well again and he defeated Jim Middelburg. Our substitute lady player Annemiek Groenewoud couldn’t cope with Myke Halkema. Despite much effort she lost in two games. This brought us to an intermediate score of 2-2.  

Erik Meijs didn’t play his best match versus Dennis van Daalen de Jel. He didn’t even come close to winning a game just because of too many own faults. Karina de Wit played an exhausting match versus Soraya de Visch Eijbergen. After having lost the first game she managed to win both the second and third in the extension. She scored an important point putting the intermediate score on 3-3.

Both mixed doubles were shared. Eva Krab and I played a good match against the champions of the Danish Junior tournament Russell Muns and Myke Halkema. We won in two straight games but Koen and Karina had much trouble with Rikkert Suijkerland and Lisa Malaihollo and they had to allow them the win. This led to the 4-4 final result.

Next week we have a full training schedule and we are going to prepare ourselves for the Bitburger Open in Saarbrücken. As the Badminton Association has no more funds left the participation has to be paid by ourselves. Of course this is very annoying but Dave and I believe that it is of great importance to keep our tournament rhythm.  

But before we go to Germany there is another league match to play next Saturday. Then we will meet my former club van Zijderveld. I am looking forward to it and after this match you will find a report on my site again.

Gelijkspel bij Velo

De kraker tussen Van Zundert Velo en Duinwijck is gisteravond onbeslist gebleven. In Wateringen werd het 4-4. Omdat Amersfoort met 0-8 won in Roosteren staan er nu drie teams bovenaan in de eredivisie.

Koen en ik wonnen in twee games van Dennis en Rikkert, maar de damesdubbel ging weer in twee games naar Velo. Jerry won weer erg knap zijn single in twee games, dit keer van Jim Middelburg. Invalster Annemiek kon het helaas niet bolwerken tegen Myke en verloor ondanks veel inzet in twee games. Tussenstand 2-2.

Erik speelde geen beste wedstrijd tegen Dennis. Teveel eigen fouten zorgde ervoor dat hij niet in de buurt kwam van gamewinst. Karina speelde een slopende wedstrijd tegen Soraya. Nadat ze de eerste game verloor, pakte ze de tweede en derde game via de verlenging en zo scoorde ze een erg belangrijk winstpunt: 3-3.

Beide mixen werden verdeeld. Eva en ik speelden een goede wedstrijd tegen Danish Junior kampioenen Russell en Myke. In twee games wonnen wij deze partij. Koen en Karina konden hun wedstrijd helaas niet winnen van Rikkert en Lisa waardoor de einduitslag op 4-4 uit kwam.

Aankomende week staat er een nieuwe trainingsweek op het programma waarin we ons gaan voorbereiden op de Bitburger Open in Saarbrücken. Doordat de geldkraan is dichtgedraaid zijn we genoodzaakt dit toernooi zelf te betalen. Heel vervelend natuurlijk maar Dave en ik vinden het belangrijk om het wedstrijdritme vast te houden.

Eerst staat er aankomende zaterdag nog een competitiewedstrijd tegen mijn oude club Van Zijderveld op het programma. Hier heb ik erg veel zin in en natuurlijk vinden jullie weer een verslag op de site na afloop van deze wedstrijd.

Come back

Saturday December the 18th is written in my diary in capital letters. That is the day I should play a league match again if everything went well during the rehabilitation process of my knee. As it all went very well on the training the last two weeks my physio at Papendal and I decided it was feasible to play the match against Velo this weekend.

Van Zundert Velo is still the leader of the Premier league and just like last year candidate for the championship. Super to make my come back against such a team. The level is good and at the same time my knee is tested. Of course it was also a repeat of the final for the championship last season. But in terms of players Velo remained the same, and Van Zijderveld faced a huge exodus. Because of injuries, an international tournament and one of the ladies who had forgotten her house key (reason why she couldn’t  get the necessary badminton equipment) we had a number of absentees and our coach was forced to call up a number of substitutes. After 2.5 hours a maximal defeat of 0-8 was on the scoreboard and that is very painful for the runner-up of last season and Van Zijderveld unworthy.

For me personally there was a ray of hope because after about three months I was playing a match again. My knee behaved fine and I have had no relapse. Today I have a day off and Monday I can get on with building up towards a good start in the New Year!

Rentree

Zaterdag 18 december staat met grote letters in mijn agenda. Dat was namelijk de dag dat ik weer een competitiewedstrijd mocht gaan spelen als alles voorspoedig verliep gedurende het revalidatieproces van mijn knie. Omdat het de afgelopen twee weken erg goed ging op de training besloten de fysio op Papendal en ik dat de wedstrijd tegen Velo al haalbaar was.

Van Zundert Velo is nog steeds de koploper van de eredivisie en net als vorig jaar de kampioenskandidaat. Super goed om tegen zo’n team mijn rentree te maken. Het niveau is prima en die knie wordt gelijk getest. Natuurlijk was het ook een herhaling van de finale om het landskampioenschap van afgelopen seizoen. Echter Velo is qua spelers hetzelfde gebleven, Van Zijderveld heeft een flinke leegloop gehad. Omdat we door blessures, een buitenlands toernooi en een vergeten huissleutel van Ă©Ă©n van de dames (waardoor zij niet bij de benodigde badmintonspullen kon komen) ook een aantal afwezigen hadden, was de coach genoodzaakt flink wat invallers op te trommelen. Een maximale nederlaag van 0-8 stond na 2,5 uur spelen op het scoreboard en dat is natuurlijk pijnlijk voor de runner-up van afgelopen seizoen en Van Zijderveld onwaardig.

Voor mij persoonlijk was er wel een lichtpuntje want ik stond na ongeveer drie maanden weer eens een wedstrijd te spelen. Mijn knie heeft het prima gehouden en ik heb geen terugslag gehad. Vandaag heb ik een dagje vrij en dan kan ik maandag weer verder gaan met de opbouw richting een goede start in het nieuwe kalenderjaar!
