Again a silver medal added to my collection

When I start writing this I am in the train from Copenhagen airport to Karlskrona, the Swedish city which hosts the European Championships Tournament this week. It is a 3½ hour journey and in about 30 minutes we have to change to a bus which will take us to our final destination. After having watched an episode of criminal minds I thought it to be a good idea to start writing a report on our final in Wateringen.

It was the third time this year that Dave and I reached the finals of an EBU tournament. This time we were facing the Malaysian World Junior Champions and unfortunately also these opponents proved to be too strong for us.

Before the match we had watched matches of these guys on video together with our coach Huaiwen Xu. We analysed their way of playing. We discovered a number of clear patterns among which their eagerness to play at the net after their service and their preference to make the third shot in the direction of the front court. We could also see that their defence was rather solid but later more about that.

In the first game both the Malaysians and we played very offensively. The rallies were not too long but for us quite effective. By the end of the game we managed to take a lead and win the game with 21-19.

The second game started with a long lasting rally and from that moment on the Malaysians changed their tactics. They fell back on their excellent defence and they sent us all over the court. We were completely surprised by this sudden change and because of that we started to make simple mistakes. In no time we were facing a 1-11 arrear. Slowly but steadily we managed to come back a bit but the difference was too big to bridge and we lost the game.

In the third game it was our intention not to allow them to take a big lead again but now they started very offensively. This smart approach of the young Malaysians surprised us again and for the second time we were confronted with a significant gap.  Add up a few mistakes of the umpire and the defeat was a fact. Very unfortunate of course but I can only conclude that these young lads are very good already and able to easily change playing styles. Keep these guys in mind for the future I would say!!!

Now it is Monday morning and I have the first impression of Karlskrona at daylight. We are staying in a beautiful and modern new hotel situated at a fantastic lake which is probably an inlet of the sea. The sun is shining and from our room we have a beautiful view.

For me the tournament starts tomorrow afternoon with a mixed doubles versus a Swiss pair. Collectie zilveren medailles weer met eentje uitgebreid

Terwijl ik dit verhaaltje schrijf zit ik in de trein van Kopenhagen airport richting Karlskrona, de Zweedse plaats waar het EK vanaf dinsdag gehouden gaat worden. Omdat deze reis ongeveer 3,5 uur in beslag neemt, zocht ik naar oplossingen om de tijd te doden. Een serie Criminal Minds heb ik al gekeken en ik vond net uit dat we over een half uur over moeten stappen op de bus. Ik heb er een bloedhekel aan als ik zo’n serie niet kan afkijken, vandaar dat ik maar aan het schrijven ben geslagen.

Voor alweer de derde keer dit jaar stonden Dave en ik in de finale van een EBU toernooi. Dit keer tegen de Maleisische wereldjeugdkampioenen en helaas bleken deze tegenstanders ook in deze finale te sterk voor ons.

Voor de wedstrijd hadden we samen met onze coach Huaiwen Xu deze jongens goed geanalyseerd. Een aantal duidelijke patronen kwamen naar voren. Zo zagen we bijvoorbeeld dat ze na de service erg vaak het netspel aan willen gaan en dat ze de derde slag ook vaak richting het voorveld willen hebben. Ook konden we terugzien dat hun verdediging vrij solide was, maar daarover later meer.

In de eerste game speelden zowel de Maleisiërs als wij vol op de aanval. Hierdoor waren de rallies niet al te lang, maar wel effectief voor ons. Tegen het einde van de game wisten we een klein gaatje te slaan en we pakten de openingsgame met 21-19.

In de tweede game begonnen we met een ontzettend lange rally en vanaf dat moment veranderden de Aziaten van tactiek. Ze vielen terug op hun uitstekende verdediging en stuurden ons het hele veld over. Doordat we toch wel een beetje verrast werden door deze grote ommekeer in hun spel begonnen we simpele fouten te maken. Een achterstand van 1-11 was een feit. Langzaam maar zeker wisten we een beetje terug te komen in die game maar de achterstand bleek te groot en we verloren hem.

In de derde game was het zaak om ze niet weer een grote voorsprong te geven, maar aan het begin van deze game begonnen ze juist weer erg aanvallend. Weer verrast door deze slimme aanpak van de jonge Maleisiërs en we kwamen net als in de tweede game op een forse achterstand. Tel daarbij een paar scheidsrechterlijke dwalingen op en de nederlaag was een feit. Heel erg jammer, maar ik kan alleen maar de conclusie trekken dat deze jonge gasten al heel erg goed zijn en bovendien erg makkelijk kunnen schakelen tussen verschillende speelstijlen. Houd deze jongens in de gaten voor de toekomst!

Inmiddels is het nu maandagochtend en zit het eerste nachtje in Karlskrona erop. We zitten in een mooi en modern hotel aan een schitterend meer, een heerlijk zonnetje schijnt en we hebben vanaf de kamer een prachtig uitzicht. Morgenmiddag begint voor mij het EK met een gemengddubbel tegen twee Zwitsers. Samen met Samantha ben ik rond 17.00u te zien op de tv baan van Badminton Europe. ’s Avonds spelen Dave en ik tegen Wit-Russen of Spanjaarden. Final at the Yonex Dutch International in Wateringen!

This afternoon Dave and I will play the men’s doubles final at the Yonex Dutch International. Our match is the second one after 12 PM.

The Dutch International is the last EBU tournament before the Olympic qualification definitely ends and for some players/pairs there are still important points to be earned. This tournament immediately precedes the European Championships tournament which starts next Tuesday in Karlskrona, Sweden. For our Technical Staff this was the reason why the players going to Sweden were entered in the doubles only just to avoid playing too many matches. Up to now this worked out well with Dave and myself  in the men’s doubles final and with an entirely Dutch ladies doubles final.

Now back to my own matches. In the first round we met two Indonesians who like to play fast and hard but we had the right answer to their playing style. We won in two fast games. A nice detail was that I trained with one of the guys in 2009 at the Djarum Club in Jakarta when I participated in the Indonesian Open.

In the quarter final we played against the number one Belgium pair. Last year we lost against them, so we wanted a better match yesterday. We know them quite well because they are coming to our training centre pretty often to practise with us. Especially in the second game we played well and we beat them in straight games.

In the semi final Dhama Gunawi and Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki were our opponents. These two Indonesians play in the first Bundesliga in Germany. They like to make a show of each match and this is not easy for the ones they are playing against. If you want to cope with their style you have to be clever and you shall not be tempted to go along with their performance because if you do they send you to every corner of the court. Fortunately we were able to maintain our tactics all the way through the match and we managed to win this spectacular and for the public very entertaining match. So this afternoon we are in the finals!

Unfortunately I cannot report about this final right away because after the match we’ll have to hurry to catch our flight to Copenhagen from where we’ll travel by train and bus to Karlskrona. It’s going to be a long day but I am looking forward to it. If our hotel provides internet I will write a report next week on what happened today. So stay tuned.
