Better footwork

Last weekend the Danes Boe and Mogensen proved again that occasionally Europeans are indeed able to defeat Asians in badminton. In Korea they won for the second time the top prize in the men’s doubles. A great achievement. In the 2009 edition of the Korean Open they won this prize for the first time and in the years after they finished twice as runner up.
I watched their game on the Internet and I read the report of their victory at Badzine. What struck me in this article was that Boe, giving his analysis of the match, commented that he thought that they moved their feet better. In my view he emphasized with this remark the importance of footwork and thus indirectly also the importance of good foot care because in our sport feet are heavily burdened. Every athlete knows that a small deviation in the position and/or the unwinding of your feet may be the cause of serious injuries and not just at your feet. Even back, knee or shoulder problems can often be traced back to the feet. I myself know that as well. I’m glad that I got help from David Evers, a specialist in this field, at an early stage of my badminton career. He is the driving force behind Footconnection in Culemborg which has been one of my sponsors for a long time now. He chose and still chooses the best badminton shoes for me and with homemade orthopaedic insoles he makes them fit for my footwork in badminton. Foot Connection has many athletes as clients , including some twenty participants at the London Games and in Sochi there are some ten participants who have Davids insoles in their (sports ) shoes or skates.

Series of tournaments has ended

It’s time for reflection. The last 3 tournaments in Germany, England and Switzerland shall be followed by a number of weeks of hard, very hard training!
Unfortunately these tournaments haven’t brought what they could and should have brought. During the first two we lost from better Korean pairs but at times we could keep up with them. In Switzerland these experiences should have paid out in our match against the French, but they didn’t. What a pity! Fortunately there was all of a sudden a great boost on Thursday evening when Koen and Ruud defeated the number one men’s pair of the world the Danes Boe and Mogensen. It was a splendid match and I cheered like hell. It felt like I was at that court myself. I was really happy! I recognised the feeling I had when we had won a match against a top 10 Chinese pair at the Bitburger Open last September. It’s super to have such an experience and you should cherish the feeling.
Monday the usual training at Papendal will start again. It is the last week with one coach. On April 4th our new female coach and trainer Xu Huaiwen will make her appearance. And it is about time, because I am ready for a new challenge.

Toernooienreeks ten einde

Het is tijd voor wat rust in de tent! Na drie toernooien in Duitsland, Engeland en Zwitserland is het nu weer tijd om een aantal weken hard te trainen! HĂ©Ă©l hard te trainen!
Helaas hebben deze drie toernooien niet opgeleverd wat het had kunnen opleveren. Tijdens de eerste twee toernooien verloren we van sterkere Koreaanse koppels, maar speelden bij vlagen heel goed mee. In Zwitserland had dit zich uit moeten betalen tegen de Fransen, alleen kwam het er totaal niet uit! Erg jammer! Gelukkig was er donderdagavond dan ineens wel een mooie opsteker, want Koen en Ruud versloegen in een schitterende wedstrijd de nummers 1 van de wereld, de Denen Boe en Mogensen. Ik heb staan juichen alsof ik zelf op de baan stond, zo blij als ik was! Ik herkende het gevoel ook weer dat ik afgelopen september mee maakte toen wij bij de Bitburger Open van een Chinees top 10 koppel wonnen. Dat is gewoon super om mee te maken en dat gevoel moet je koesteren!
Maandag starten de trainingen op Papendal weer. Het is de laatste week waarbij we met maar Ă©Ă©n coach werken want per 4 april staat onze nieuwe trainster Xu Huaiwen op de stoep en dat is maar goed ook, want het is hoog tijd voor een nieuwe uitdaging!

Boe and Mogensen deserved winners!

When I woke up this morning I was still somewhat surprised at the results of the Super Series finals. Each final was won in straight games and based on the results there had been no excitement whatsoever. I consider the victory of the Danes Boe and Mogensen on the Koreans Lee and Jung quite an achievement. Last Friday they still had lost the group match against these two Asians but with their second place in the group they qualified for the semi finals in which the triple world champions, the Chinese Fu and Cai, were defeated in a thrilling match. In the final they met the Koreans once again and this time they won with 21-17 and 21-15 demonstrating that they are the legitimate number 1 of the world. So now Boe and Mogensen may call themselves the best Super Series men’s double of the year 2010.
Yesterday I played a league match again against Almere but with a 2-6 result the club from Flevoland proved to be too strong for us. Lester and I won the double against Saber and Dave and Hans also won his single match. For the first time this season I played a mixed double again with Georgy (we both had been injured for a long time) and that was very nice. We both played well but unfortunately our opponents were in three games just too strong. Nevertheless I am confident that we will regain our original level soon again.
Next week I will practise three days at Papendal and on Thursday we will leave for Estonia. I hope to be able to keep you informed from my hotel in Tallinn.

Boe/Mogensen terechte nrs 1!

Toen ik vanochtend wakker werd was ik toch enigszins verbaasd over de uitslagen van de finales van de Super Serie finals. Elke finale werd in straight games gewonnen en van spanning was aan de uitslagen te zien weinig sprake. Heel erg knap vind ik de overwinning van de Denen Boe en Mogensen op de Koreanen Lee en Jung. In de groepswedstrijd van vrijdag hadden ze nog redelijk dik verloren van de twee Aziaten en gingen zij als tweede in de poule door naar de halve finale. Daarin versloegen zij de drievoudig wereldkampioenen Fu en Cai uit China in een bloedstollende wedstrijd. In de finale waren de Koreanen weer de tegenstanders van Boe en Mogensen maar nu werd de wedstrijd met 21-17 en 21-15 gewonnen en lieten de Denen zien dat zij de terechte nummers 1 van de wereld zijn. Nu mogen Boe en Mogensen zich de beste Super Serie dubbel van het jaar 2010 noemen.
Zelf heb ik gisteren ook weer competitie gespeeld tegen Almere, maar de club uit Flevoland bleek met 2-6 te sterk voor ons. Met Lester won ik de dubbel tegen Dave en Saber en Hans won ook zijn single partij. Voor het eerst dit seizoen speelde ik weer een mix met Georgy (we zijn allebei lang geblesseerd geweest) en dat was weer erg fijn en we speelden goed. Helaas waren onze tegenstanders in drie games net te sterk, maar ik heb er vertrouwen in dat we ons oude niveau weer snel oppakken.
Komende week zal ik drie dagen trainen op Papendal om vervolgens donderdagochtend richting Estland te vertrekken. Ik hoop jullie vanuit mijn hotel in Tallinn op de hoogte te kunnen houden!

Course how to excel at the right moment

 Many top athletes are wondering how to excel at the important moments in their career. It is an art in itself. In Badminton there currently seem to be two Indonesians who master this art the best: Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan.
For these men 2010 wasn’t very successful so far. They announced that they didn’t want to play for the PBSI, the Indonesian badminton association, anymore. They started to train individually. Okay, all year they are on an average of three in the world ranking but this year they only won just one Grand Prix Gold tournament, the one in Malaysia. We, in the Netherlands, would sign on such a result, but these guys are accustomed to better results. A few weeks ago, in Denmark, they were second behind the new numbers 1 in the world, the Danes Boe and Mogensen. And precisely these two men are of course not active at the Asian Games. As the rest of the top 15 is all Asian, you may call it a very strong tournament. Seeded secondly, they won all their matches in three games. In succession they defeated a Japanese couple, the second couple of Chinese Taipei, the numbers 1 of Korea and finally the Malaysians Koo and Tan. A bit more than two years after their Olympic golden match in Beijing they managed it again and this time in Guangzhou: Gold at the Asian Games!

Cursus pieken

 Veel topsporters vragen zich af hoe je moet pieken op de belangrijke momenten in je carrière. Het is een kunst op zich. In de badmintonsport lijken er momenteel twee Indonesiërs te zijn die dat als de beste kunnen: Markis Kido en Hendra Setiawan.
2010 was voor deze mannen helemaal niet zo’n succesvol jaar. Ze maakten bekend niet langer voor de PBSI, de Indonesische badminton bond uit te willen komen en gingen individueel aan de slag. Oké, ze staan het hele jaar door gemiddeld drie op de wereldranglijst maar ze wonnen dit jaar alleen maar een GP Gold toernooi in Maleisië. Wij in Nederland zouden daar voor tekenen, maar deze jongens zijn beter gewend. Een paar weken geleden werden ze in Denemarken tweede achter de nieuwe nummers 1 van de wereld, de Denen Boe en Mogensen. En juist deze twee mannen zijn niet aanwezig op de Asian Games, de “Olympische Spelen” van Azië. Aangezien de rest van de top 15 allemaal Aziatisch is, mag je het een mega sterk toernooi noemen. Als tweede geplaatst wonnen zij al hun wedstrijden in drie games. Ze wonnen van een Japans koppel, het tweede koppel van Chinese Taipei, de nummers 1 van Korea en uiteindelijk de finale van Koo en Tan uit Maleisië. Ruim twee jaar na hun Olympische gouden wedstrijd in Peking doen ze het weer, maar nu in Guangzhou: Goud op de Asian Games!

Boe and Mogensen

Matthias Boe and Carsten Mogensen have won their second consecutive Super Series Tournament. After having defeated the Olympic champions of 2008 in the finals last week in Odense, today they won the final of the French Open in Paris. What exactly is their strength?
To begin with, their first three, four strokes are very good. Especially Matthias creates a lot of pressure at the net and knows how to place the shuttles in such a way that Mogensen can be as effective as possible in the backfield. Apart from that Mogensen also has a solid defence and is able, even under pressure, still to place the shuttles in all corners of the court. Both have the ability to think one step ahead and they can easily find “the empty corners” of their opponents.
But that’s not all. In fact these guys are a strong team. Even when it’s difficult for a moment they support each other and that’s clever! The example of this is their victory at the Bitburger Open in September. The Bitburger is a Grand Prix Gold tournament, one level below the Super Series. So a piece of cake for these guys and being second on the world ranking they were supposed to win this tournament easily. But that proved not to be easy at all. In the first round, they were very close to elimination. It was very hard work. They didn’t show the spirit they usually show at Super Series. Under those circumstances it was very clever and remarkable to see how they formed a front at important moments and managed to win a third game by 21-19. Also in the semi-final they were almost out, but yet again they always touch each other lightly. A box or a high five! A sign of unconditional support to one another. Radiate that they won’t lose the match, even if they are not playing well. Moreover, it is a gesture to the opponents which will not make them happy. The final than was a formality against the same opponents they had in Paris this afternoon. Only true champions can act like this!

Boe/Mogensen

Matthias Boe en Carsten Mogensen hebben hun tweede Super Serie op rij gewonnen. Nadat ze vorige week de Olympische kampioenen van 2008 in de finale versloegen, wonnen zij vandaag de finale van de French Open in Parijs. Wat is nou precies hun kracht?
Om te beginnen zijn hun eerste drie, vier slagen ontzettend goed verzorgd. Vooral Matthias zorgt voor erg veel druk aan het net en weet de shuttles zo te spelen dat Mogensen in het achterveld zijn ding kan doen. Daarnaast heeft Mogensen een solide verdediging en kan hij onder grote druk de shuttles nog in alle hoeken plaatsen. Beide hebben het vermogen om Ă©Ă©n stap vooruit te denken en zij kunnen moeiteloos ”the empty corner” bij de tegenstander vinden.
Maar dat is niet alles. Deze jongens zijn namelijk een hecht team. Ook als het even moeilijk gaat zijn zij er voor elkaar en dat is knap! Het voorbeeld hiervan is hun overwinning tijdens de Bitburger Open in september. De Bitburger is een Grand Prix Gold toernooi. Eén niveau onder het Super Serie level. Voor deze jongens dus gesneden koek en als nummers 2 van de wereld werden zij geacht het toernooi fluitend op hun naam te schrijven. Dat bleek helemaal niet zo makkelijk te gaan. In de eerste ronde waren zij zeer dicht bij uitschakeling. Het was sjouwen en heel hard werken. De spirit die je bij ze ziet bij een Super Serie was er toen helemaal niet. Ontzettend knap is het dan om er op de belangrijke punten toch te staan en een derde game te winnen met 21-19. Ook in de halve finale lagen ze er bijna uit, maar altijd is daar toch weer even een lichte aanraking naar elkaar toe. Een box of een high 5! Een teken van onvoorwaardelijke steun naar elkaar toe. Uitstralen dat ze de wedstrijd niet gaan verliezen, ook al zitten ze er niet lekker in. Bovendien is het een gebaar naar de tegenstanders toe en die zullen er niet vrolijk van worden. De finale was een formaliteit tegen dezelfde tegenstanders als vanmiddag in Parijs. Alleen echte kampioenen kunnen dat!
