Boe/Mogensen

(7 november 2010)

Clarity at last!

Yesterday afternoon I had my MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) in the Gelderland Valley Hospital in Ede. A few hours later I had the result already. Unfortunately it wasn’t positive.

For me it was the first time I had such a scan. It all started with a questionnaire with a number of specific questions. One of them was if I were claustrophobic? This made me worry a bit because I don’t like small or narrow rooms or spaces at all.

I had to lay down on a table which was pushed into a hollow cylindrical magnet which is rather tight. My knee was wrapped and supported by sand bags so that I could not move my leg. Laying still wasn’t easy because of the strong magnetic force of the MRI. Apparently I had moved my leg so they had to make another scan. After 40 minutes it was all finished.

Early yesterday evening I got the result and it was not so good. I will briefly summarize what came out:

In the posterior horn of the lateral menisci is a rupture. At the same side a cartilage deficiency can be seen. It shows that the ACL (cross ligament) must have had a bang sometime but however it isn’t badly damaged, it has been at risk all the time. Furthermore they discovered a so called “Bakers cyst” in my knee. It is filled with fluid but it has no practical consequences. Finally there are still traces of fluid in my knee.

Thank God I do not need an operation but I do need a longer period of recovery. The first prognosis is that it may take four to six weeks before it all is restored. That means that I probably will not be able to play tournaments and /or matches anymore this year. This is extremely frustrating, but on the other hand the big advantage is that I’ve had the MRI scan and that I now know what is wrong. Because without this examination I would have continued playing with a great chance of getting a very serious injury.

All this means that Dave and I have been withdrawn from the French Open which will take place next week and tomorrow I will not play in the match against Smashing. Of course I will be present cheering my team mates to victory. From now on I will do everything to realize  a speedy recovery!
