Come back

(12 december 2010)

Saturday December the 18th is written in my diary in capital letters. That is the day I should play a league match again if everything went well during the rehabilitation process of my knee. As it all went very well on the training the last two weeks my physio at Papendal and I decided it was feasible to play the match against Velo this weekend.

Van Zundert Velo is still the leader of the Premier league and just like last year candidate for the championship. Super to make my come back against such a team. The level is good and at the same time my knee is tested. Of course it was also a repeat of the final for the championship last season. But in terms of players Velo remained the same, and Van Zijderveld faced a huge exodus. Because of injuries, an international tournament and one of the ladies who had forgotten her house key (reason why she couldn’t  get the necessary badminton equipment) we had a number of absentees and our coach was forced to call up a number of substitutes. After 2.5 hours a maximal defeat of 0-8 was on the scoreboard and that is very painful for the runner-up of last season and Van Zijderveld unworthy.

For me personally there was a ray of hope because after about three months I was playing a match again. My knee behaved fine and I have had no relapse. Today I have a day off and Monday I can get on with building up towards a good start in the New Year!

Rentree

(12 december 2010)

There is no such thing as a goodbye

(9 december 2010)

This whole week is really dominated by one thing only: the last days of Mr. Kim as national coach of the Dutch selection. Approximately a year and a half ago he came to the Netherlands to lift badminton in our country to a higher level. When I look at myself then for sure I’ve learned a lot from the Korean trainer.

When he started with us it was not always easy to understand his way of training and coaching. The exercises were often totally different from what we were used to and sometimes even his explanation left much to be desired. It was a difficult period, but reasonably quick there was a changeover. As I, as a men’s double player, worked with him every day I got familiar with it at some point. All exercises always have the same position to start with: look where your opponent is and direct the shuttle to where he isn’t standing or as he could say so beautifully: “See player first, hit in empty corner.” Above all Mr. Kim has brought a lot of innovation and it was very much needed. I hope that the three men’s doubles pairs can continue this way of training. Right now it is important to keep it, until a worthy successor to Mr. Kim is found. Tonight at a farewell dinner in Arnhem we say good bye. Almost the entire selection takes him out and of course we bought him a nice souvenir.

Marco Borsato, a Dutch singer, once wrote a song with the title ”Afscheid nemen bestaat niet”. Which means “There is no such thing as a goodbye”. I like to stick to that thought, but next week it will be completely different again. The majority of the selection will then be in Rome for the Italian International, but Dave and I will be staying at Papendal to continue training under the guidance of the Technical Director who will fill the empty space from next week onwards.

Afscheid nemen bestaat niet

(9 december 2010)

See player first, hit in empty corner”.

Jollenaway

(7 december 2010)

That Ajax was not to his liking anymore was generally known. But that Martin Jol turns his back to Ajax before the winter stop is quite remarkable.

Ajax is underperforming this year. Of the 17 encounters only 9 were won, 5 were a draw, and were 3 lost. Add to that the struggle between the Chief coach and assistant coach Danny Blind about the position of his son inside Ajax and you have a basis for a departure. A few weeks ago during a press conference, Jol still stated that there were no problems between the two trainers. A nice politically correct answer, but most people know better.

It’s salve on the wound to see that also Ajax is bothered by a trainer who is going away. It’s certainly not an exception because in thirteen years the club used up no less than 12 trainers. It seems to become an annual tradition.
There is a difference with the badminton world, however: Ajax immediately found a successor in assistant coach Frank de Boer, but since the departure of Mr. Kim was announced, one month ago now, it remains deafening silent in our surroundings. As Mr. Kim is flying back to Korea next Friday I am wondering who will train us next week at Papendal when a large part of the selection is setting off for a tournament in Rome.

Top sports. It remains a difficult but still very interesting world. I wish Frank de Boer all kinds of success with his upcoming match in the Champions League, with the match against Vitesse and the classic match against Feyenoord. Although you can not really talk about a classic. My club from Rotterdam is ranked 14th and fighting against degradation football. But at least their coach is still there!

WegJollen

(6 december 2010)

Merci and au revoir!

(3 december 2010)

A great training week lies behind us. We welcomed the French double selection which visited Papendal for a training camp. A very good initiative from Badminton the Netherlands and the French Badminton Association!

In August we visited the German selection a couple of days, this week guests came to visit us. Such a training camp is always refreshing. You play against other opponents and the multi-shuttle drills e.g. are performed in a different way.  The French use a special camera tripod in order to present the shuttles much faster. On the tripod two tubes are attached, containing about 40 shuttles each. This is ideal for training the fast strokes, like racket skills and defence exercises. The French coach told me that this construction comes from the UK. Perhaps it is a good idea to also introduce this system at Papendal.

Personally, I also made good progress this week. Finally I was allowed on court for one hour a day to run 2-2 exercises with Dave or to play games against the French. I’m not dissatisfied, actually it went pretty well and most importantly I do not feel insecure on court. Of course I still lack speed and the error rate is slightly higher than normal, but I do not worry about it. No doubt this will improve rather quickly! Next week I’ll make another step forward and hopefully a comeback in the league will than come in sight!

Merci et au revoir!

(3 december 2010)

I am beginning to get somewhere!

(27 november 2010)

I have another good week of training behind me. Thanks to the customised training schedule, the power training and the massage treatments my recovery is going well.

Although the exercises of the training schedule are all pretty “basic”, I find myself able to do these kinds of training for a 100%. In the morning I train two hours on court. In the afternoon I either do the power training (3 times a week) finished off with some technique exercises or a regular court training. Friday morning was a nice workout because the last 40 minutes I was able to spar with my partner Dave against Koen and Ruud and that was very pleasant after such a long time.

Next week the French national selection of the men’s and ladies doubles comes to visit us at Papendal. More and more Papendal is going to look like an international training center and that’s great fun. To my knowledge there are three men’s doubles combinations so next week I hope to be able to do some 2-2 exercises, and also play a number of matches together with Dave. Sparring against other, less familiar, couples is a great advantage!  Monday our physio and I will compose my program for the next week. I look forward to making it a training week as good as last week!

’t Begint er op te lijken!

(27 november 2010)
