Zwarte dinsdag

(4 december 2012)

Start of the return matches in the German Premier League

(3 december 2012)

Last weekend another double encounter was scheduled. The first matches of the second half of the league! On Saturday a home match versus Berlin and on Sunday the away match versus Rosenheim. Both are tough opponents.

Again we didn’t have the strongest possible team formation as Marcus Ellis was playing the Welsh Open where he reached two finals and Johanna Goliszewski was more or less worn out in the German Army where she has been called for duty and where she is getting an average of 4 hours sleep per night. Still she was allowed to leave the Hannover barracks to play these matches.

On Saturday we started very energetically. Judith Meulendijks and Johanna won the ladies double and Dima Zavadsky and I defeated Robert Blair and Bin Shen Tan in an attractive and exciting 3 game match. The first men’s single was also a win but then the odds turned completely and the remaining three matches were won by Berlin. So just like the first encounter this one also ended with a draw and we were quite satisfied with that result.

After a quick shower we rushed off in our “team minibus” for the trip to Rosenheim.  This city is located in the South of Germany quite near the Austrian border.  As the distance is 700 kilometres we made an overnight stop at an hotel somewhere in the middle of nowhere. After a solid sleep and a proper German breakfast we took all the time to drive the last 180 kilometres on Sunday morning.

Also in this competition we started very well. Again Dima and I won the men’s double and also the ladies double and ladies single were decided in favour of Mülheim. After these 3 points the Rosenheim team seemed to get wings when they won the second men’s single. The first men’s single between Dima Zavadsky and Tan Chun Seang was a magnificent match which was, after both players had gotten some matchpoints, finally decided in the third game and in favour of Rosenheim with a score of 25-23.

So it was up to Johanna and me to try and score the winning point in the mixed doubles. We succeeded to win the first game but in the second and third game our opponents were just a bit better. With 21-18, 19-21 and 19-21 we drew the shortest straw which meant that we had to settle for a draw again. Nevertheless, considering the circumstances, we should be happy with the 2 points and with the second place in the League at one point behind leader Berlin!

This week we only have 3 days of training because we leave for Ireland on Thursday where we will play the last tournament of this year. Tomorrow Samantha and I will perform in a youth sports TV show which will be recorded in the afternoon and after that I’ll have an intake interview for the level 4 Sports coach course which will start in January. So a nice week ahead of me! If you want to know how things develop you may have a look at my twitter account http://twitter.com/JorritdeRuiter

De Bundesliga return wedstrijden zijn begonnen!

(3 december 2012)

We begonnen zeer sterk.

Hard work and commitment pay off: mixed title in Norway!

(19 november 2012)

Thursday morning KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) took us to Oslo where the Norwegian International would be played. After a smooth flight we arrived at our hotel early afternoon. We were informed that there were no training courts available as the qualification matches were well under way. But there was an alternative, an excellent fitness centre right around the corner. It was great to let off steam and to exercise after the journey.

Our first matches were scheduled on Friday evening. Normally, when all goes well, Friday is a very hard day with 4 matches but this time I had a bye in the first round of both men’s doubles and mixed. A nice bonus. The first round in the men’s doubles is not worth mentioning. Our opponents were not strong. But in the mixed it was a different story. Samantha Barning and I had 2 Finnish opponents and in the first game we didn’t stand a chance. We simply were not concentrated but after this unexpected loss we put things in order by winning the following 2 games quite easily. So two quarter finals!

This meant that now the hardest day would be Saturday. In the men’s doubles Dave Khodabux and I met a Danish pair which was not too difficult to play. We won in two games. But again the venom was in the mixed. We were facing a second seeded Ukrainian pair and I had never won before from this guy. Also this time our start was not good. I had trouble to find the right rhythm but nevertheless we kept on scoring points. Finally we did win the first game in the extension with a little bit of luck. In the second game, after the interval, we managed to take a lead and we were no longer in danger. This was a nice win and it meant 2 semi finals!

In those two matches we had to play versus our team mates. Dave and I started with the men’s doubles versus Jacco Arends and Jelle Maas. At our last encounter, the final of the Spanish Open, we won and I had a positive feeling when we started off. From the beginning we all were well focussed and well matched. In fact we might as well have started at 18-18 which we do quite often during the trainings. We won the first game with 19 and they won the second with 19. You wouldn’t expect it but the third game had a similar course. Unfortunately we lost that one with …19-21. From both sides it was a good match and I was happy with my playing, but of course we were disappointed after such a thrilling match.

There was hardly any time to deal with this disappointment as the semi final mixed had to be played soon after it. Again a Dutch get together with Dave and Selena Piek as opponents. A month ago we also played each other in the second round of the Dutch Open and then we won after a marathon encounter. This match was completely different again. Less rallies and the focus on the first 4 or five shots. We won the first game and they over classed us in the second. The final game was very exciting and till the last stage of the game we were well matched but then we drew the longest straw and won the game with 21-18. COOL, our first challenge final!!

In the last encounter on Sunday Samantha and I were facing the German pair Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels, a very strong and experienced pair which not long ago was number 8 on the world ranking. At the London Olympic Games they played a great tournament and reached the quarter finals. In the past I had played them once and then I lost in 3 games. However, in my still fresh partnership with Samantha it was the first time. In the first game we didn’t stand a chance and we didn’t even come close to winning it. We lost with 16-21. In the second game we first kept a 3 point arrear for some time but then we started to play longer rallies. I really had to work very, very hard and I almost died in the back court. For some reason this way of playing worked out well and while fighting for every single point we managed to get a better control. At a 17-20 score we succeeded to survive the three match points but then again an arrear of 20-21. We also survived this match point followed by 2 more consecutive points. This meant a win and it gave us both a very good feeling. In the final game we kept on fighting for every single point but again we were facing an arrear of some points. At the end we first tied the score and then for the first time we even took a lead. We reached match point first but we didn’t succeed to capitalize it right away. It was now or never!! 19-20, a good and again long lasting rally and…… the error of the Germans! We had won!!! We just did it! How happy we were to conclude a difficult tournament with defeating an opponent of this calibre. It really gave us a satisfied feeling!

Today I am recovering and enjoying this achievement. Tomorrow it is business as usual again at Papendal!

Hard werken en inzet lonen: mix titel in Noorwegen!

(19 november 2012)

We hadden gewonnen!!!

Bitburger Open and Papendal Sports Parade

(4 november 2012)

After a successful match in the German League versus Refrath (2-4) and a week of hard training it was time for the Bitburger Open, one of the best organised tournaments of the circuit. This annual event in Saarbrücken is one of the few where everything always goes well. The hotels are good, transport to and from the venue is good, the venue itself is decorated beautifully, but the most important fact is that their time schedules are perfect. At this tournament they hardly are ever behind schedule and nowadays that is quite an achievement. Apart from all this there is one disadvantage: there are no “warming up courts” which is difficult especially at the beginning of the tournament. But to make a long story short, I always like to play at the Bitburger.

Wednesday afternoon we started with the first round of the men’s doubles. Two Germans, who we had never met before, were our opponents. These guys were well motivated and they played freely and openly. But we played lousy and I really believe that this was our worst match ever. Sometimes there are days that you wonder why you got up in the morning and this was such a day. Finally we won and after that I rushed back to the hotel and my bed.

Next morning I felt much better. Fit and relaxed for the first round of the mixed doubles. We had met our Danish opponents before in Belgium when we lost in a rather poor match. The first game was not very promising. We lost it with 10-21. In the second game we again started badly but then we finally found the right rhythm and focus and from that moment on we controlled the match and made it a win.

The second round of the men’s doubles was between Robert Blair and Koen Ridder and us. We made a very good start and took a 12-5 lead but after the interval we lost quite a number of points in a row and they came alongside. Till the end of the game we were levelled with each other but finally our opponents were just a bit sharper and they won. The second game showed a similar scenario and again Robert and Koen played better in the final stage of this game. So again it was not too good and we fell short in this match. We’ll have to work hard the coming period to enable us to make a next step.

After a few hours rest it was time for the second round in the mixed doubles. Schwenger and Nelte were our opponents and I knew them well. Last Sunday I had played them in the German League and then my partner and I got spanked. Now I had the strong intention not to lose again from this pair and with this thought I entered the court. Obviously it had been of some help because this time I played one of the best matches ever. Of course this wouldn’t have been possible without Samantha with whom I made a wonderful team. Everything we did worked out fine, even a number of trick shots and when these go well you know that you are in control. We won the match in two games with 12 and 11 and qualified ourselves for the quarter finals.

In the quarter final we met the European Champions and first seeded Poles Mateusiak and Zieba. Mateusiak is 36 of age but is still playing like a young God. Zieba is much younger but has also been at the top for quite a number of years. They play a special kind of mixed and are able to win from every other pair.

In the first game things went rather well but tactically we made a few wrong decisions putting us on arrears all the time. We lost with 16-21. In the second game we did the right things and we were well-matched with our opponents. The longer rallies often were a prey for us but since you are forced to play very sharply you also make a few “unforced errors”. Anyway after 40 minutes we lost the second game with 18-21. We were very satisfied with this match but even more important from game 1 in the first round until the quarter final we managed to keep a consistent level and compared to the Dutch Open this is a major advancement.

Friday night I was back home again which was okay because on Saturday the Dutch Olympic Committee was celebrating it’s 100th anniversary with a grand Sports Parade at the National Olympic Training Centre Papendal. The whole area had been transformed into a huge fairground where thousands of visitors could get acquainted with numerous sports, see very many presentations and listen to interviews with celebrities like H.R.H. Prince Willem Alexander, Dutch astronaut André Kuipers, gymnastics gold medallist Epke Zonderland and many other Dutch Gold medallists from London as well as from the past. We also took care of a number of badminton clinics which were well attended. Especially the Knight Trainer, our shuttle gun, was a crowd puller. Altogether this sports parade was a great show which got a lot of media attention.

Next week we will be training like normal at Papendal and on Saturday we will play the last match of the first half of the league versus Düren. It’s a home match in Mülheim so if you want to come along and have a look, please do.

Bitburger Open en Papendal Sport Parade

(4 november 2012)

An enjoyable double match weekend in the German League!

(3 september 2012)

After the win in Gifhorn last Tuesday we were facing a double match weekend in the German premier League and against strong opponents. On Saturday we met the current national champion Berlin and on Sunday we received Rosenheim in our hall.

In the German League you have to travel quite some miles for the away matches and fortunately one of the longest trips lies behind us. Friday evening we drove to Berlin in our very comfortable mini bus and we spent the night in an hotel. The next day, after breakfast, we took a walk through lively Berlin and had a cup of coffee at Starbucks watching people passing by. This city radiates so much energy and that generated a very good mood for the match to come.

The encounter itself went very well. Marcus Ellis and I played very strongly in our men’s doubles and we won. But the ladies doubles drew the short straw. “Dima” Zavadsky defeated Chetan Anand from India but in the second men’s single Alexander Roovers had to accept the superiority of Kenneth Jonassen the former European Champion and present Coach of Team England. In the ladies single Judith Meulendijks repeated her unexpected win from February again by defeating Juliane Schenk in two games. It looks like Juliane is completely lost after her win in the Singapore Super Series earlier this year. It’s a pity to see a world class player fighting against herself. I really hope that she will find the way up soon again, but as a team we still were very happy with Judith and her achievement. The mixed doubles was won by Berlin making the final score 3-3. So we could take 1 point back home. After a quick meal we raced back to Mülheim.

Sunday was our first home match in the RWE Hall which is our home base and where we will play 5 out of the 9 home matches. The other 4 will be played in the hall where the German national ladies team is training. Rosenheim was our opponent. Again Marcus and I won in 2 games and this time the ladies doubles was won quite easily by our girls. Alexander Roovers had to get going in his single versus Hannes Käsbauer but once on steam he finished the job very convincing in 2 games. Zavadsky lost his match in three games but Judith got hardly any resistance from her opponent who didn’t seem to believe in herself. The mixed doubles, rather unexpectedly, went to Rosenheim putting the final score on 4-2. After 3 matches Mülheim is second in ranking with 5 points. Next Saturday we’ll play our second home match versus Bonn Beuel but first I have a week of hard training at Papendal ahead of me.

Genoten van dubbel Bundesliga weekend!

(3 september 2012)

We speelden tegen Rosenheim.

Beautiful golden clinics at Dutch National Sports Centre Papendal!

(16 augustus 2012)

The Olympic Games are over and today no less than 53 athletes who won a medal at the Games were at Papendal to give clinics. It was their way to thank the partners of The Dutch Olympic Committee for their support. A great initiative because both companies and athletes spent golden time together.

After we had finished our regular training we fortunately had some time to go and have a look at the running track where we have trained so hard the past weeks. The track had been converted into a mini Olympic stadium. Of course there also was an Olympic Golden Clinic Flame which was lit by Olympic windsurfing champion Dorian van Rijsselberghe. After this ceremony the clinics could start and it was really entertaining. I saw the funniest scenes such as track cyclist Teun Mulder doing a judo fight with judoka Henk Grol, Horizontal Bar Champion Epke Zonderland practising the start of the 100 meters running, Golden medallist ladies 100 meters free style Ranomi Kromowidjojo riding the horse of dressage master Anki van Grunsven and our pure-bred optimist and “Dutch Usain Bolt” Churandy Martina wearing a fencing suit.

I really enjoyed this very inspiring afternoon! The icing on the cake was a photo with Churandy “happy man” Martina because no other athlete shows so much pleasure and positiveness which in my opinion are the most important ingredients for an all-out performance.
