A smart draw against Bonn Beuel!

Yesterday it was already the fourth round in the Bundesliga and we didn’t have to travel.  A home match against Beuel from Bonn. This team has strong players in their ranks such as Zwiebler, Kindervater, Michels and Olver. Luckily we were able to grab a point because the final score was 3-3.
In the men’s doubles Marcus and I played against the Olympian Ingo Kindervater and Andreas Heinz. After a rather harsh start we finally fought ourselves back in the game which we won. In the second game we lost quite some points in the beginning but we managed to take a small lead at the mid-game interval. After that we first increased our lead but than Ingo and Andreas scored a series of points which brought them close to us. Just in time we got focussed again and won the second game as well.
The ladies doubles was a very good match. Unfortunately our girls Judith and Johanna were just a fraction short against Birgit Michels and Heather Olver. In the third game Bonn took the lead which they kept till the end.
We knew in advance that both men’s singles would be tough. With European Champion Marc Zwiebler in your team you can more or less count on at least one win. Marc did what he was expected to do, beating Zavadsky, our first man. In their encounter at the Olympics Marc needed three games but yesterday he never really was in danger. “Dima” lost in two games but he certainly played an excellent match.
Also the second men’s singles player from Beuel, the Indonesian Tedjono, is strong. Alexander Roovers played very well but Tedjono is just a bit faster and more “explosive” and he knew very well how to exploit that. He won the match in two games.
For the second time this season Judith didn’t have to play her ladies singles match. Beuel had no opponent for her so we got this point as a gift. Good for us of course but I don’t hope this will happen more often because it is not really professional.
In the last match, the mixed doubles, Marcus and Johanna played their best match so far. They beated the former European Youth Champions Zwiebler and Michels in two games conjuring up a draw. Of course we were very happy with this result.
Now it lasts three weeks before the next encounters in the Bundesliga will take place. This week we start with the first tournament of the season, the Belgian International. After all hard work of last summer it feels good to be able to compete again with the others in the European circuit. You may think that I have enjoyed the beautiful weather this Sunday but then you are wrong. I spent the day with two exams and a practical part of the trainers course. I hope I did well.

Knap gelijkspel tegen Bonn!

Gisteren stond de vierde Bundesliga ronde alweer op het programma. Dit keer hoefden we niet ver te reizen, we speelden thuis tegen Bonn. Dit team heeft sterke spelers in hun gelederen. Denk aan Zwiebler, Kindervater, Michels en Olver. Gelukkig konden we toch een puntje pakken, want de eindstand kwam uit op 3-3.
De herendubbel speelden Marcus en ik tegen Olympiër Ingo Kindervater en Andreas Heinz. Na een wat stroef begin knokten we onszelf in de wedstrijd en we pakten de eerste game. In de tweede game kwamen we ruim achter, maar bogen die achterstand toch nog om in een kleine voorsprong bij de mid-game interval. Daarna liepen we verder uit maar maakten Ingo en Andreas op het einde toch nog een serie punten. Gelukkig waren we nét op tijd weer bij de les en we wonnen ook de tweede game.
De damesdubbel was een erg goede wedstrijd. Helaas kwamen onze dames Judith en Johanna nét een fractie tekort tegen Birgit Michels en Heather Olver. In de derde game pakten Bonn de leiding en die gaven ze niet meer uit handen.
Dat de herenenkelspelen zwaar zouden worden, wisten we op voorhand. Met Europees kampioen Marc Zwiebler in huis ben je op voorhand haast zeker van een punt. Hij deed wat van hem verwacht werd, winnen van onze eerste man Zavadsky. Bij de Olympische Spelen moest hij er flink voor knokken en won ”maar” in drie games, gisteren kwam hij niet echt in gevaar. ”Dima” verloor in twee games, maar speelde zeker een goede wedstrijd.
Ook de tweede herenenkel is sterk. De Indonesiër Tedjono speelt voor Bonn Beuel. Alex speelde lang niet slecht, maar Tedjono is net even wat sneller en explosiever en wist dat goed uit te buiten. In twee games ging de wedstrijd naar Bonn.
Voor de tweede keer dit seizoen hoefde Judith niet in actie te komen in haar single. De tegenstander had geen vrouwenenkelspeelster meegenomen en zonder te spelen kregen we dit punt cadeau. Lekker voor ons uiteraard, maar toch hoop ik niet dat dit vaker gaat gebeuren, want het staat niet zo professioneel.
In de afsluitende mix speelden Marcus en Johanna hun beste wedstrijd tot nu toe. Ze versloegen oud Europees Jeugd Kampioenen Zwiebler en Michels in twee games, waardoor we dus een gelijkspel uit de hoge hoed toverden. We waren hier uiteraard erg blij mee!
De volgende Bundesligawedstrijden zijn pas weer over drie weken. Aankomende week begint voor ons het eerste toernooi van het seizoen, de Belgian International. Na alle harde arbeid van afgelopen zomer is het fijn dat we ons weer kunnen meten met de rest van het circuit. An enjoyable double match weekend in the German League!

After the win in Gifhorn last Tuesday we were facing a double match weekend in the German premier League and against strong opponents. On Saturday we met the current national champion Berlin and on Sunday we received Rosenheim in our hall.
In the German League you have to travel quite some miles for the away matches and fortunately one of the longest trips lies behind us. Friday evening we drove to Berlin in our very comfortable mini bus and we spent the night in an hotel. The next day, after breakfast, we took a walk through lively Berlin and had a cup of coffee at Starbucks watching people passing by. This city radiates so much energy and that generated a very good mood for the match to come.
The encounter itself went very well. Marcus Ellis and I played very strongly in our men’s doubles and we won. But the ladies doubles drew the short straw. “Dima” Zavadsky defeated Chetan Anand from India but in the second men’s single Alexander Roovers had to accept the superiority of Kenneth Jonassen the former European Champion and present Coach of Team England. In the ladies single Judith Meulendijks repeated her unexpected win from February again by defeating Juliane Schenk in two games. It looks like Juliane is completely lost after her win in the Singapore Super Series earlier this year. It’s a pity to see a world class player fighting against herself. I really hope that she will find the way up soon again, but as a team we still were very happy with Judith and her achievement. The mixed doubles was won by Berlin making the final score 3-3. So we could take 1 point back home. After a quick meal we raced back to Mülheim.
Sunday was our first home match in the RWE Hall which is our home base and where we will play 5 out of the 9 home matches. The other 4 will be played in the hall where the German national ladies team is training. Rosenheim was our opponent. Again Marcus and I won in 2 games and this time the ladies doubles was won quite easily by our girls. Alexander Roovers had to get going in his single versus Hannes Käsbauer but once on steam he finished the job very convincing in 2 games. Zavadsky lost his match in three games but Judith got hardly any resistance from her opponent who didn’t seem to believe in herself. The mixed doubles, rather unexpectedly, went to Rosenheim putting the final score on 4-2. After 3 matches Mülheim is second in ranking with 5 points. Genoten van dubbel Bundesliga weekend!

Na de winstpartij in Gifhorn van afgelopen dinsdag stonden er dit weekend twee nieuwe wedstrijden op het Duitse Bundesliga programma. Niet tegen de minste tegenstanders trouwens. Op zaterdag speelden we tegen landskampioen Berlijn en zondag onze eerste thuiswedstrijd tegen Rosenheim.
In de Duitse competitie moeten behoorlijk wat kilometers afgelegd worden voordat je op de plaats van bestemming bent. Gelukkig hebben we Ă©Ă©n van de langste reizen nu al gehad. Vrijdagavond zijn we richting Berlijn gereden met onze zeer comfortabele mini bus. Daar hebben we de nacht doorgebracht. ’s Ochtends na het ontbijt hebben we een heerlijke wandeling gemaakt door het bruisende Berlijn en bij de Starbucks koffie gedronken en mensen gekeken. Ik denk dat het voor elke grote hoofdstad geldt, maar wat straalt Berlijn een hoop energie uit. Geen verkeerd gevoel zo vlak voor de wedstrijd!
De wedstrijd verliep voor ons team erg goed! Marcus en ik wonnen in een zeer sterk gespeelde partij onze dubbel, de damesdubbel trok net aan het korste eind. ”Dima” Zavadsky won in een knappe herenenkel van Chetan Anand uit India, maar helaas verloor Alexander Roovers na een zeer goede wedstrijd van voormalig Europees Kampioen en bondscoach van Team England Kenneth Jonassen. Judith herhaalde haar kunststukje van afgelopen februari. Zij versloeg in twee games Juliane Schenk, die na haar Super Serie winst in Singapore de weg volledig kwijt lijkt te zijn. Het is niet leuk om een speler van wereldklasse zo te zien vechten tegen zichzelf. Hopelijk gaat het snel weer beter met haar, maar uiteraard waren wij als team superblij met Judith en haar prestatie. Het gemengddubbelspel ging in twee games naar Berlijn waardoor de einduitslag op 3-3 kwam en we een punt mee naar huis konden nemen.
Zondag werd de eerste thuiswedstrijd gespeeld. De RWE-halle is voor vijf wedstrijden onze thuisbasis, de overige 4 wedstrijden worden gespeeld in de hal waar het Duitse nationale vrouwenteam traint. We speelden tegen Rosenheim. Weer wonnen Marcus en ik onze dubbel en ook de vrouwendubbel ging gemakkelijk naar onze meiden. Alexander won na een twijfelachtige start knap zijn single, Zavadsky verloor in de verlenging van de derde game zijn partij. Judith had geen kind aan haar tegenstander die er weinig geloof in leek te hebben. De mix ging in drie games, toch wel een beetje onverwacht naar Rosenheim waardoor de einduitslag op 4-2 kwam. Good kick off with MĂĽlheim!

After so many weeks of just training it was Tuesday finally time for the first match of the new season and this year in the German Premier League. With my new club 1. BV MĂĽlheim I travelled to Gifhorn for the first encounter with BV Gifhorn.
But first I met my team mates, got the team outfit and than a lot of photo’s were taken for the official presentation. I already knew all my teammates from the international circuit. Our first man is Zavadsky who is the number one of Ukraine and he participated in the London Olympics. The second men’s single player is Alexander Roovers who has been playing for Mülheim quite many years. My partner in the men’s doubles is Marcus Ellis from England. We have played against each other very often but it is fun to play with him this season. Our playing styles fit well together. Our first lady, Judith Meulendijks, I have known for years already. After having played in Denmark for quite some time she now makes her entrance in the German Premier League. Last but not least is Johanna Goliszewski, our ladies doubles/mixed doubles player. She also plays in the German National Team. So altogether a strong but also a very sociable team!
The match itself was not very exciting. Our team was too strong. Marcus and I won our men’s doubles in two games and so did the ladies doubles. Zavadsky was still bothered by the aftermath of his honeymoon and he had to allow Raul Must of Gifhorn win the first men’s single in two games. But that was the only point we lost this evening. The second men’s single and the mixed doubles were won by Mülheim and Judith Meulendijks didn’t have to play as her opponent Carola Bott was injured and stayed off court. Final score: 5-1.
The coming weekend the next two matches are scheduled. On Saturday we play in Berlin versus SG EBT Berlin and Sunday afternoon is our first home match when we’ll meet PTSV Rosenheim in our own RWE hall. So on to the next good result!!

Goede start bij MĂĽlheim!

Na weken en weken training stond dinsdag dan eindelijk de eerste wedstrijd van het nieuwe seizoen op het programma en wel in de Bundesliga in en tegen Gifhorn.
’s Middags ontmoette ik mijn team in MĂĽlheim en daar werd eerst de teamkleding uitgedeeld en er werden een hoop foto’s genomen. Alle teamleden ken ik al van het internationale circuit. Onze eerste heer Zavadsky is de nummer 1 van OekraĂŻne en deed mee aan de Olympische Spelen in Londen. Tweede heer is Alexander Roovers die al lang voor MĂĽlheim uitkomt. Marcus Ellis uit Engeland is mijn dubbelmaatje bij de club. We hebben al vaak tegen elkaar gespeeld, maar dit seizoen dus ook met elkaar en dat vind ik leuk. Ik denk dat onze speltypes namelijk goed bij elkaar passen. Onze eerste dame ken ik uiteraard al jaren, want dat is Judith Meulendijks. Na jaren gespeeld te hebben in Denemarken komt ”Juud” nu dus uit in de Bundesliga. Johanna Goliszewski is onze dubbelspeelster. Zij speelt ook voor het Duitse nationale team. Kortom, een sterk maar vooral erg gezellig team!
De wedstrijd zelf was niet erg spannend, want daarvoor was ons team te sterk. Marcus en ik wonnen onze dubbel in twee games en de damesdubbel deed hetzelfde. Zavadsky had nog wat last van de naweeën van zijn huwelijksreis en speelde nog niet zijn beste badminton tegen Raul Must van Gifhorn. In twee games ging de winst naar de thuisclub. Het bleek hun enige punt te zijn van die avond, want de tweede herenenkel en de mix gingen beiden in twee games naar Mulheïm. Omdat Carola Bott geblesseerd aan de kant bleef, hoefde Judith niet de baan op om de single te spelen, maar kregen we zonder ook maar een shuttle te slaan het punt cadeau. Einduitslag 1-5.
Dit weekend staan alweer de twee volgende wedstrijden op het programma en niet tegen de minste tegenstanders. Zaterdag spelen we in en tegen Berlijn, de huidige landskampioen en zondag de eerste thuiswedstrijd tegen Rosenheim. Op naar een volgend mooi resultaat!

Beautiful golden clinics at Dutch National Sports Centre Papendal!

The Olympic Games are over and today no less than 53 athletes who won a medal at the Games were at Papendal to give clinics. It was their way to thank the partners of The Dutch Olympic Committee for their support. A great initiative because both companies and athletes spent golden time together.
After we had finished our regular training we fortunately had some time to go and have a look at the running track where we have trained so hard the past weeks. The track had been converted into a mini Olympic stadium. Of course there also was an Olympic Golden Clinic Flame which was lit by Olympic windsurfing champion Dorian van Rijsselberghe. After this ceremony the clinics could start and it was really entertaining. I saw the funniest scenes such as track cyclist Teun Mulder doing a judo fight with judoka Henk Grol, Horizontal Bar Champion Epke Zonderland practising the start of the 100 meters running, Golden medallist ladies 100 meters free style Ranomi Kromowidjojo riding the horse of dressage master Anki van Grunsven and our pure-bred optimist and “Dutch Usain Bolt” Churandy Martina wearing a fencing suit.
I really enjoyed this very inspiring afternoon! The icing on the cake was a photo with Churandy “happy man” Martina because no other athlete shows so much pleasure and positiveness which in my opinion are the most important ingredients for an all-out performance.

Prachtige Golden Clinics op Papendal!

De Olympische Spelen zijn voorbij en maar liefst 53 medaille winnaars waren vandaag op Papendal voor clinics. Op deze manier bedanken ze de partners van het NOC*NSF voor hun steun. Echt een geweldig initiatief, want zowel de bedrijven als de sporters hebben een gouden tijd met elkaar.
Nadat we onze trainingsdag beëindigd hadden, was er gelukkig nog even tijd om een kijkje te nemen op de atletiekbaan waar we de afgelopen weken zo keihard getraind hebben. De baan was omgedoopt tot een mini Olympisch Stadion. Uiteraard was er ook een Olympische Golden Clinic vlam en die werd aangestoken door windsurfer en Olympisch kampioen Dorian van Rijsselberghe. Daarna konden de clinics dan echt beginnen. Je ziet de grappigste taferelen. Zo probeerde baanwielrenner Teun Mulder een partijtje te judoën tegen Henk Grol, oefende Epke Zonderland de start van de 100 meter, reed Ranomi op de knol van Ankie en zag je ras optimist en sprintkanon Churandy Martina met een schermpakkie aan.
Ik heb echt genoten! Wat een inspiratie! Als kers op de taart heb ik nog even een foto gemaakt met Churandy ”Ik ben blij man” Martina, want als er Ă©Ă©n atleet is die plezier en positiviteit (naar mijn idee dĂ©Â ingrediĂ«nten om een topprestatie te leveren) uitstraalt, dan is hij dat wel.

Great final of the Olympic Badminton Tournament!

After the extremely unfortunate Tuesday evening with a disgraceful performance of the 8 Asian ladies doubles players the badminton tournament eventually went very well. Every day the Wembley arena was sold out and last Sunday more than a billion people watched the finals on TV. I really have enjoyed the entire event with the Sunday men’s single final as a climax! It was great that the Dutch Broadcasting Corporation offered a daily live-stream of the badminton tournament making it possible to watch the matches at home. Unfortunately I lacked the financial means to travel to London and attend the matches myself.
Lin Dan did it again. His second Olympic title. I believe it was the best men’s single match I have ever seen. Two players so evenly matched! Both fast and explosive, with an excellent technique and mentally that strong. All credits to Lee Chong Wei who made it to the finals despite the serious injury he got in May. Believe me, he must have a very strong mind. Normally he should be the best player ever, but it is his misfortune that at decisive moments one person is always slightly better.
I even enjoyed watching the ladies finals because in both events they played very offensive. Usually the ladies doubles is dominated by long rallies with infinite clears, but this match showed hard smashes and spectacular defences. With their forehand defence the (Chinese) women try to create the best position to return the shuttle as fast and as hard as possible, which is remarkable.
Of course the great ladies winner was Zhao Yunlei who grabbed not only the ladies doubles title but also the mixed doubles one with her partner Zhang Nan! It’s not a real power mixed doubles like Fischer/Pedersen and Chen Xu/Ma Jin, but they play smart and technically. Zhang Nan plays almost every shot steeply down and his defence is well controlled. Zhao Yunlei is always at the right spot, anticipates very cleverly, plays hard and fast and has a better defence than many men’s doubles players. So after their World Championship also the Olympic title makes them the legitimate numbers one of the world.
Finally the men’s doubles final. Very surprising because I never expected Boe and Mogensen to beat the Koreans. I felt a little bit sorry for Jung Jae Sung because this was his last tournament and I think he is a real hero, but for Europe this was a great and more than welcome success. Unfortunately the final was rather one-sided because Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng were just too strong. After Silver in Beijing it now was Gold in London. The rumours are that this pair will quit playing too, so there will be changes at the top of the men’s doubles! I am already looking forward to Rio!

Geweldig einde van het Olympische badmintontoernooi!

Na een uiterst ongelukkige dinsdagavond waarin de 8 Aziatische dubbelspeelsters een wanvertoning lieten zien, is het badmintontoernooi uiteindelijk toch nog helemaal goed verlopen. Elke dag was het Wembley stadion uitverkocht en meer dan een miljard televisiekijkers zagen de finales van zondag. Ik heb werkelijk waar genoten van het hele badmintontoernooi, maar de finaledag waarop de mannenenkelspelfinale gepland stond sloeg echt alles! Trouwens geweldig dat de NOS elke dag via de livestream het badminton aanbood, want helaas had ik zelf niet de financiële middelen om naar Londen te reizen en op deze manier kon ik toch alles perfect volgen!
Lin Dan maakte het weer waar en werd voor de tweede keer Olympisch kampioen. Ik denk dat het de beste singlewedstrijd was die ik ooit gezien heb. Twee spelers die zo aan elkaar gewaagd zijn! Allebei zo snel en explosief, zo technisch en mentaal zo sterk. Alle credits voor Lee Chong Wei die in mei nog zwaar geblesseerd raakte en het toch weer tot de finale wist te schoppen. Geloof me, dan moet je het in je koppie aardig op orde hebben! Normaal gesproken zou hij de allerbeste speler ooit zijn, alleen heeft hij de pech dat er nog één iemand nét iets beter is op de beslissende momenten!
Ik heb zelfs met veel plezier naar de vrouwenfinales gekeken, want er werd in zowel de damesdubbel als in de damessingle erg aanvallend gespeeld. Normaal gesproken staat vooral het vrouwendubbel in het teken van lange rallies met oneindig veel clears, in deze partij werd er gewoon keihard naar beneden gespeeld en daardoor ook spectaculair verdedigd! Opvallend bij de (Chinese) vrouwen is dat zij proberen zoveel mogelijk forehand te verdedigen om de shuttle vervolgens zo hard mogelijk terug te kunnen slaan.
De grote winnares was natuurlijk Zhao Yunlei, want naast de damesdubbeltitel pakte zij ook nog de mixtitel met Zhang Nan! Het is niet een echte powermix zoals Fischer/Pedersen en Chen Xu en Ma Jin, maar wel een hele slimme, tactische mix. Zhang Nan speelt haast alles zeer steil naar beneden en heeft erg veel rust in zijn verdediging, Zhao Yunlei staat altijd op de goede plaats, anticipeert als de beste, kan hard slaan en heeft een betere verdediging dan menig mannendubbelspeler. Na hun wereldtitel dus ook de Olympische titel en terecht de nummers 1 van de wereld.
Ten slotte de mannendubbelfinale. Erg verrassend want ik had nooit verwacht dat Boe en Mogensen van de Koreanen zouden winnen. Ik had best te doen met Jung Jae Sung omdat het zijn laatste toernooi was en ik hem echt een held vind, maar voor Europa was dit resultaat natuurlijk geweldig en meer dan welkom. Helaas was de finale eenzijdig, want Cai Yun en Fu Haifeng waren gewoon te sterk en wonnen na het zilver van Peking nu goud! In de wandelgangen wordt gezegd dat ook zij nu stoppen, dus er gaan de komende tijd veranderingen komen in de top van de mannendubbel! Ik kijk nu al uit naar Rio!
