The Olympics: Preview mixed doubles

The male half of the 2008 golden mixed doubles combination, Lee Yong Dae, will this time try to defend his Olympic title. He is only 23 years old but already now one of the greatest double players ever. Together with Ha Jung Eun he will try to equal what the Chinese Zhang Jun and Gao Ling did before: winning two consecutive Olympic Games. It’s going to be a hell of a task for two reasons. Firstly Ha has a very moderate service (8 out of 10 services are flickservices) and secondly there are many contenders for the medals. Out of the 5 events the outcome of the mixed doubles is the most difficult one to predict.

The Beijing silver lady winner Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia will alongside Tontowi Ahmad try to end one step higher than last time. They have proven that they are able to play well in England by winning the 2012 All England.

Naturally also China has likely candidates and based on the draw they may even have two finalists in the ranks. The number one of the world and World Champions Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei will do their utmost to take that golden medal back home to China. But also Chen Xu and Ma Jin, widely feared for their very hard smashes in combination with subtle net playing, will fight for the highest honour.

Besides we have no less than 5 European pairs in this competition of whom the Danish Fisher and Pedersen are the ones with the highest seeding. They are in one group with the European Champions Mateusiak and Zieba. At the European Championships the Danish lost dramatically from the unleashed Poles. I expect to see both pairs in the quarter finals.

The 3 other European pairs are in Group A. Nice detail is that we will have a repeat of the World Championship final between the British Adcock and Bankier and the Chinese Zhang and Zhao. The latter combination won this match easily, but in the next matches the British have shown to be able to beat them. In short: the mixed doubles tournament is going to be one big spectacle!!!

Voorbeschouwing gemengddubbelspel

De mannelijke helft van de gouden mix combinatie uit 2008, Lee Yong Dae, zal deze editie proberen zijn Olympische titel te verdedigen. Hij is slechts 23 jaar maar nu al een van de grootste dubbelspelers allertijde. Aan de zijde van Ha Jung Eun zal hij proberen een resultaat neer te zetten dat al eerder werd behaald door de Chinezen Zhang Jun en Gao Ling: het winnen van twee opeenvolgende Olympische Spelen. Dit gaat een hele zware opgave worden. Niet alleen omdat Ha beschikt over een zeer matige service (8 van de 10 services zijn flickservices), maar ook omdat er heel veel kanshebbers zijn voor de medailles. Het gemengddubbelspel is misschien wel het moeilijkste te voorspellen van alle 5 de disciplines.

De zilveren medaille winnares van Peking Liliyana Natsir uit Indonesië zal aan de zijde van Tontowi Ahmad proberen een treedje hoger te eindigen dan vier jaar terug. Dat ze goed spelen in Engeland hebben ze dit jaar al bewezen op de All England, waar ze er met de titel vandoor gingen.

Ook China heeft uiteraard grote kanshebbers en loting technisch gezien zelfs twee finaleplaatsen in de gelederen. Nummers 1 van de wereld en de wereldkampioenen Zhang Nan en Zhao Yunlei zullen er alles aan willen doen die gouden mix medaille weer mee terug naar China te nemen. Maar ook Chen Xu en Ma Jin, gevreesd voor de keiharde smashes in combinatie met het fijne netspel, zullen hoge ogen willen gooien.

Daarnaast hebben we maar liefst vijf Europese mixkoppels in de strijd. Het hoogst geplaatst zijn de Denen Fischer en Pedersen. Zij zitten in één groep met Europees kampioenen Mateusiak en Zieba. Op de EK gingen de Denen er keihard af tegen de ontketende Polen. Ik verwacht dat ze allebei doorgaan naar de kwartfinales.

In poule A zitten de andere drie Europese koppels. Leuk detail is dat we een herhaling gaan krijgen van de WK finale tussen de Britten Adcock/Bankier en Zhang/Zhao uit China. De laatste combi won die wedstrijd eenvoudig, maar in latere wedstrijden hebben de Britten laten zien van ze te kunnen winnen. Het mixtoernooi zal één groot spektakel worden!

The Olympics: Preview ladies doubles

Only one of the six Beijing ladies doubles medallists will participate in London. Olympic Champion Yu Yang from China will try to defend her title together with Wang Xiaoli. This pair is top favourite for gold. These ladies became world champion in 2011 in Wembley and those who want to beat this pair should make a tremendous effort.

The ladies who have the best chances versus this super combination are their country(wo)men Zhao Yunlei and Qing Tian, the numbers 2 of the world. At the All England they have already shown that they are able to beat them when especially Wang did perform very badly.

Naturally there are also outsiders who could come far but a final between these two pairs seems to be more or less certain. The European Champions Juhl and Pedersen fortunately are an excellent European counterweight but for a good result they should first get through the group stage which will require a significant effort.

Also the Koreans have a very good pair. Ha Jung Eun and Kim Min Jung could have a surprise in store. They are in a relatively easy group with pairs from Australia and Africa, so the quarter finals are within reach for them but will they be strong enough to get a medal?

My prediction:

Gold: Yu Yang/Wang Xiaoli

Silver: Zhao Yunlei/Qing Tian

Bronze: Jung Kyung Eun/Kim Ha Na

Voorbeschouwing damesdubbelspel

Slechts één van de zes medaillewinnaressen van Peking zal aan de start verschijnen in Londen. Olympisch kampioen Yu Yang uit China zal aan de zijde van Wang Xiaoli haar titel proberen te verdedigen. Ze is ook nu de topfavoriet want ze is de huidige nummer 1 van de wereld en werd in het Wembley stadion wereldkampioen in 2011. Wie van dit duo wil winnen moet van hele goede huize komen.

Het koppel met de meeste kansen tegen dit superkoppel zijn landgenoten Zhao Yunlei en Qing Tian, de nummers 2 van de wereld. Ze hebben dit jaar al laten zien dat ze van hun landgenoten kunnen winnen op de All England, toen vooral Wang geen deuk in een pakkie boter sloeg.

Uiteraard zijn er ook outsiders voor de titel maar een finale tussen deze twee koppels lijkt een zekerheidje. Gelukkig hebben we uit Europa ook een erg sterk koppel in de vorm van Europees Kampioenen Juhl/Pedersen. Voor een goed resultaat moeten ze echter wel eerst de groepsfase doorkomen en dat gaat een behoorlijke opgave worden.

Ook de Koreanen hebben een zeer goed koppel in huis. Ha Jung Eun en Kim Min Jung zijn in staat voor een verrassing te zorgen en hebben een relatief gemakkelijke groep met onder andere de dubbels uit Australië en Afrika. De kwartfinale is dus zeker haalbaar, maar zijn ze sterk genoeg om een medaille mee naar huis te nemen?

The Olympics: Preview men’s doubles

In the men’s doubles there will also be a new pair winning the gold medal as Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan didn’t succeed to qualify for London. In my opinion that’s a shame not only because they lacked only 200 points in the ranking but in particular because they play badminton in a very offensive and attractive way. Nevertheless there are enough good pairs left to make it a spectacular battle.

The silver medallists of Beijing are now seeded first. Fu Haifeng and Cai Yun were world champion four times but a gold medal at the Games is still lacking. Most of the time these guys are unbeatable at World Championships but at the Olympics runner up “only”. Will they succeed to score everlasting fame this time?

Their biggest competitors and also my personal favourites are the Koreans Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung. They have played each other very often and so far the mutual results are in favour of the Koreans. In Beijing they already lost in the first round and since this is Jung’s last tournament I bet that he will do his utmost to end his impressive career in a stylish way.

For Europe there are also chances. Carsten Mogensen and Mathias Boe have shown before that they have the potential to beat anyone. For both it is their first time at the Games and this could be their only disadvantage. At least they have a good draw and they should be able to win a medal.

There are also a few outsiders to be reckoned with such as the Koreans Ko and Yo and perhaps Koo and Tan from Malaysia too. Leading up to the Games the latter pair has played only a very few tournaments because of disappointing results. They had to focus on extremely hard training supervised by the Korean twofold silver medallist  Yoo Yong Sung. Next week we will see if this strategy will pay off.

Voorbeschouwing mannendubbelspel

Ook in het mannendubbelspel komt er sowieso een nieuw Olympisch gouden koppel, want Markis Kido en Hendra Setiawan wisten zich nét niet te plaatsen voor Londen. In mijn ogen doodzonde want het scheelde geloof ik 200 punten op de ranking, maar vooral jammer omdat zij gewoon geweldig aanvallend en attractief badminton spelen. Gelukkig blijft er nog genoeg spektakel over.

De zilveren medaille winnaars van Peking zijn nu als eerste geplaatst. Fu Haifeng en Cai Yun zijn al vier keer wereldkampioen geweest maar een gouden medaille op de Spelen ontbreekt nog. Meestal zijn deze mannen op WK’s niet te kloppen, maar op de Spelen dus ‘’slechts’’ een 2e plaats. Gaat het ze nu dan eindelijk lukken eeuwige roem binnen te slaan?

Hun grootste concurrenten en tevens mijn persoonlijke favorieten zijn de Koreanen Lee Yong Dae en Jung Jae Sung. Heel erg vaak speelden zij al tegen elkaar en de Koreanen staan er in onderlinge resultaten beter voor. In Peking vlogen ze er al in de eerste ronde uit en aangezien dit Jung zijn laatste toernooi is, gok ik erop dat hij zijn imposante carriere in stijl wil eindigen.

Kansen voor Europa zijn er ook zeker. Carsten Mogensen en Mathias Boe hebben al eerder laten zien dat zij van iedereen kunnen winnen. Het is voor allebei hun eerste Olympische Spelen, wellicht dat dat hun enige nadeel is. Ze hebben in ieder geval zeer goed geloot en een medaille moet er zeker in zitten.

Outsiders voor de medailles zijn de Koreanen Ko/Yo en misschien ook wel Koo/Tan uit Maleisië. Dit laatste koppel heeft in aanloop naar de Spelen toe maar erg weinig toernooien gespeeld vanwege tegenvallende prestaties. De focus moest komen te liggen op keihard trainen onder leiding van tweevoudig zilveren medaille winnaar uit Korea Yoo Yong Sung. Volgende week gaan we zien of deze strategie zijn vruchten zal afwerpen.

The Olympics: Preview ladies singles

One thing is for sure these games the triumphal podium for the ladies singles will be entirely different because all the 2008 medallists don’t play anymore. Zhang Ning is the present Chinese coach of the ladies single players, Xie Xingfang holds the hand of Lin Dan and Maria Kristin Yulianti was last seen at the East Java sawas.

Wang Yihan should be the big favourite during these Olympic Games. After all she is the present number one of the world who conquered the 2011 world championship in the same Wembley Stadium. In 2012 she “only” won the Malaysian Open. In the other big tournaments another Chinese lady player managed to perform better.

The lady who is in very good shape is the very young Li Xuerui. Actually she didn’t qualify for the games. According to the world ranking of 3 May she ranked only 4 where she should have been among the best 3. Thanks to her excellent performances in the past season the Chinese Olympic Committee decided to delegate her and to leave home the number three of the world Wang Shixian. Li’s achievements speak for themselves. She won the German Open, the All England, the Asian Championships and the India Super Series. In Indonesia she was runner up. By far the best performance of all but the question is now if she will prove herself in London.

Fortunately Europe has very good players too. How about Yao Jie who has to play Ragna from Iceland and Akvile Stapusaityte, the Lithuanian who plays for Duinwijck. Jie should be able to make it through the group but after that she will have a very difficult task beating the fourth seeded Indian Nehwal. Still I believe Jie can press Nehwal hard. I have seen her training at Papendal and she looks very strong.

A European with potential to win a medal is Juliane Schenk. In Singapore she won her first Super series and she has shown to be able to beat everyone.

My prediction is:

Gold: Li Xuerui

Silver:  Saina Nehwal

Bronze: Juliane Schenk

Voorbeschouwing damesenkelspel

Het vrouwenenkelspel krijgt in ieder geval een compleet nieuw podium, want alle medaille winnaressen van 2008 zijn er niet meer bij. Zhang Ning is de huidige Chinese damessingle coach, Xie Xingfang houdt de hand van Lin Dan vast en Maria Kristin Yulianti is voor het laatst gezien op de Sawa’s van Oost-Java.

Nummer 1 van de wereld Wang Yihan zou de grote favoriete moeten zijn tijdens deze Olympische Spelen. Zij is immers de huidige nummer 1 van de wereld en werd in 2011 in hetzelfde Wembley stadion wereldkampioen. In 2012 won ze ‘’alleen’’ nog maar de Malaysia Open, want een andere Chinese wist de afgelopen tijd steeds de show te stelen.

De vrouw in vorm is de nog zeer jonge Li Xuerui. Eigenlijk was zij volgens de wereldranglijst van 3 mei niet geplaatst want ze stond ‘’slechts’’ op nummer 4 waar ze bij de beste drie had moeten staan. Haar uitzonderlijke prestaties van dit seizoen hielpen haar echter toch naar Londen, want het Chinese Olympische Comité lieten de nummer drie van de wereld Wang Shixian thuis. Li’s prestaties liegen er niet om. Zo won ze de German Open, de All England, de Asia Championships en de India Super Serie en werd ze tweede in Indonesië. Veruit de beste prestaties van allemaal, maar gaat zij het waarmaken in Londen?

Ook Europa heeft zeer goede speelsters. Wat te denken van onze eigen Jie die het gaat opnemen tegen Ragna uit IJsland en Akvile, de Litouwse spelend voor Duinwijck. Jie kan de groep wel doorkomen maar daarna krijgt ze een zware kluif aan de als vierde geplaatste Nehwal uit India. Toch denk ik dat Jie het Nehwal knap lastig kan maken. Ik heb haar keihard zien trainen op Papendal en ze oogt sterk.

Een andere Europese met grote medaillekansen is Juliane Schenk. Ze won in Singapore haar eerste Super Serie en heeft al laten zien van iedereen te kunnen winnen.

The Olympics: Preview men’s singles

These weeks Papendal is a nice base for training. Dutch olympic athletes as well as foreign athletes are busy with their final preparations for the Games. I met a couple of BMX athletes doing their power exercises. These guys are no match for the track cyclists but last week there was a German track cyclist, a very good one they say, who had legs as thick as all the legs of the Dutch Badminton selection together. To be honest I had to look twice before I realised that this was not a white gorilla which had escaped from some German Zoo.

While we are training like hell at Papendal the real Badminton top players will start to compete in London. I am really looking forward to following these matches. It’s great that in this edition the first rounds are played in groups i.s.o. the knock-out system from the beginning. This makes the tournament more attractive.

My preview of the men’s singles.

The 2008 Olympic Champion Lin Dan is again present. He has won all major titles once or twice and he will make himself an immortal champion if he would succeed to win his second Olympic gold medal. In fact I think that he will not have many problems to win because his main competitor from Malaysia, Lee Chong Wei, got a serious ankle injury in May.

For many consecutive years Lee Chong Wei was the number one of the world and the king of the super series tournaments. But he has no real big trophies. No gold medals at World Championships or Olympic Games. During the World Championships of 2011 in London he came close when he got 2 match points versus Lin Dan but the latter managed to survive and to grab the title. In May during the Thomas Cup final LCW sprained his ankle in his match versus the European legend Peter Gade.

Peter Gade has been at the World top for some 15 years now. In 1997 he already was ranked number one of the World and two years later he won the All England. Also Gade is bothered by the “LCW syndrome”. It also applies to him no World titles and at Olympic Games he never performed very well. The past 2 years it is noticeable that he has grown a bit too old for the World top although he still won a bronze medal at the 2011 World championships. After that his achievements started to deteriorate with an absolute low in April when he was beaten in the quarter finals of the European Championships.

China has 2 more trump cards. The bronze medallist of 2008 and 2010 World Champion Chen Jin managed to qualify for the games at the very last minute. The past year his performances were not really appealing. His last super series title was the Singapore Open in 2011. A salient detail is that his opponent in the finals was  Lin Dan who was not feeling well at that time and didn’t play.

The third Chinese is Chen Long who is still very young and at this level still unexperienced. Nevertheless a dangerous outsider but not a real favourite for the title. Some day he will be able to defeat everybody but if he can at his first Olympic Games?

Voorbeschouwing herenenkelspel

Papendal is deze weken een heerlijke trainingsbasis. Olympische atleten uit Nederland zetten de laatste puntjes op de i, maar ook topsporters uit andere landen komen naar Arnhem toe om hun laatste Olympische voorbereidingen te treffen. Zo zie je bijvoorbeeld in het krachthonk de BMX bikkels, niet de slapste jongens, die eigenlijk in het niet vallen bij de baanwielrenners. Vorige week was er een Duitse (naar verluid) hele goede baanwielrenner met een onderstel zo breed als alle benen van onze gehele nationale selectie samen. Om eerlijk te zijn moest ik wel een paar keer kijken voordat het tot mij doordrong dat deze blanke versie van Bokito niet uit de Deutsche Burgers Zoo was ontsnapt.

Terwijl wij ons deze weken helemaal het leplazerus trainen op Papendal, gaan de echte kanonnen over een paar dagen van start op het Olympisch badmintontoernooi. Ik verheug me erg om deze wedstrijden te gaan volgen en vind het zeer positief dat er deze editie in groepen gespeeld gaat worden. Toch weer even net wat specialer dan zo’n knock-out schema.

Mijn voorbeschouwing op het herenenkelspel

De Olympisch Kampioen van 2008 is er deze editie ook weer bij. Lin Dan heeft alle grote titels al één of meerdere keren gewonnen en zal zichzelf alleen nog maar meer onsterfelijk maken als hij voor de tweede keer goud wint. Om eerlijk te zijn denk ik dat hij vrij eenvoudig zijn titel gaat verdedigen, want zijn grootste concurrent uit Maleisië raakte half mei nog zwaar geblesseerd aan zijn enkel.

Lee Chong Wei was jarenlang onafgebroken de nummer 1 van de wereld en de koning van de Super Serie toernooien. Wat alleen nog ontbreekt op zijn imposante erelijst zijn de echte grote klappers. Geen gouden medailles op WK’s of op de Spelen. Tijdens het WK van 2011 in Londen was hij er het dichtst bij. Hij kreeg twee matchpoints tegen Lin Dan maar de Chinees werkte ze weg en ging aan de haal met de wereldtitel. In mei ging LCW tijdens de Thomas Cup Finals hard door zijn enkel in de wedstrijd tegen de Europese legende, Peter Gade.

Gade staat al ongeveer 15 jaar aan de wereldtop. Al in 1997 was hij de nummer 1 van de wereld en twee jaar later schreef hij de All England op zijn naam. Ook Gade heeft last van het ‘’LCW’’ syndroom. Hij won namelijk ook nooit een wereldtitel en wist op de Olympische Spelen eigenlijk nooit te imponeren. Vooral de laatste twee jaar is te merken dat Gade te oud is geworden voor de echte wereldtop. Hij haalde nog wel een bronzen medaille op het WK van Londen, maar dat is eigenlijk een standaard medaille voor hem op een wereldkampioenschap. Daarna gingen zijn prestaties hard achteruit met als dieptepunt zijn eerste verlies op een EK ooit. In april verloor hij al in de kwartfinales!

China heeft nog twee ijzers in het vuur. De bronzen medaille winnaar van 2008 en wereldkampioen van 2010 Chen Jin plaatste zich op het nippertje voor deze Spelen. Echt hele aansprekende resultaten heeft hij het laatste jaar niet gehaald. Zijn laatste Super Serie titel dateert uit 2011 toen hij de Singapore Open titel won. Saillant detail is dat zijn tegenstander in de finale, Lin Dan, weer eens ziek, zwak en misselijk was en de overwinning zonder te spelen naar Chen Jin ging.

De derde Chinees is de nog jonge en op dit niveau nog onervaren Chen Long. Een gevaarlijke outsider voor de medailles, maar geen echte titelfavoriet. Op een goede dag kan hij van iedereen winnen, maar of hij dat op zijn allereerste Olympische Spelen al kan doen?
