All England and Swiss Open

(18 maart 2014)

After a three week tour to Mülheim, Birmingham and Basel I am back in the Netherlands. When I look back at these 3 weeks I am quite satisfied.

After the German Open I flew to Birmingham for the All England. Because of our present world ranking we had to play the qualification tournament. In the first round we were to meet an Irish pair but they had to withdraw for medical reasons. So all of a sudden we got different opponents who had been on the waiting list. Recently Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto made a new pair but until a couple of months ago they both had different partners with whom they both were in the top ten of the world ranking. So this would be quite a challenge.
We started the match very well and almost the entire first game we were in the lead. We even got one game point but unfortunately we couldn’t cash it. In the second game we were in the lead again till the interval but now the Indonesian’s came alongside faster and we were not able to take a stand anymore. So eliminated in the first round of the qualification tournament. Still we used our time well by evaluating our play and by observing the pairs who would be our opponents the next week. Altogether we made a good foundation for the Swiss Open.

In Basel we met Kim Nielsen, as from April 1st our new coach. It felt good to have him behind us when we played our first match. Our opponents were Chris Langridge and Heather Olver, 8th seeded and 16 on the World Ranking. We made a very poor start and in no time we were far behind. Although we still scored a number of points towards the end of the game it was too late to restructure the game in our favour. But it turned out to be a good foundation for the second game which we managed to win. In the beginning of the third game we didn’t play well again and we had to allow our opponents to take the lead again. This time however the gap was bridgeable and we fought back in an efficient and well considered way. Again towards the end of the game we scored a number of consecutive points and we secured the win. Very satisfactory!

The next day we were facing the German pair Peter Kaesbauer and Isabel Herttrich. Again a poor start and we failed to really score in the first game which we lost by 9-21. This was a set back which was also effecting our playing in the second game. Again we fell behind but we had enough fighting spirit to make this game an exciting one. Nevertheless we didn’t manage to draw level. So no third game and no quarter final.

To summarize: I am glad that we have already demonstrated to be able to offer good resistance to pairs who are in the top 20 of the World. In Germany we only just lost from the numbers 14, in Switserland we won from the numbers 16. In the near future we will have to work hard to drastically improve our basic level. I am confident that with the help of our new Danish coach Kim Nielsen we will find the way back up again!

All England en Swiss Open

(18 maart 2014)

China here we come!!!

(23 juli 2013)

China here we come!!!

(23 juli 2013)

Today, Samantha and I drew up the balance sheet of our crowd funding project. Although we have not quite reached the target amount we still can afford to go to China to participate in the world championships. All this thanks to all the contributions we have received. What has  helped us tremendously is the invitation of our former colleague Yao Jie to come to Wuhan, prior to the World Championships, and give a demonstration there together with the other Dutch World Championships participants. In addition to taking care of our accommodation in Wuhan and the journey from Wuhan to Guangzhou, Jie also offered, a generous allowance to contribute to the cost of our participation in the World’s. We appreciate this fantastic gesture of Jie even more since we now have a full week to acclimatize and to exercise and practise. Also on behalf of Samantha I would like to thank everyone again who has supported us the past weeks with a contribution made in cash or otherwise.

Moreover I attended the annual meeting of the Dutch Badminton Association on Saturday the 22nd of June. There the budget for 2014 was also discussed and approved. Part of that budget is of course the expenditure provided on the Elite Sport program. The amount assigned to travel to tournaments didn’t give me a positive feeling and made me realize that also in the (near) future crowdfunding projects will be more than necessary to get sufficient funds for an adequate international competition program. Therefore the bank account number will stay open for donations. The account number is: (IBAN NL81ABNA0) 50.86.01.045 in the name of F. de Ruiter. Swift/BIC code ABNANL2A

Friday we’ll fly to Wuhan via Shanghai for our first week in China. On Friday August 2 we travel on to Guangzhou where the World’s will start on Monday, August 5! Of course you can stay informed about my experiences via Twitter and Facebook . You may look at www.twitter.com/jorritderuiter or on www.facebook.com/deruiterjorrit

Are we going to make it or not?

(12 juni 2013)

On July 5, Samantha and I will leave for Orange County in California, USA where we will participate in the US Open. After that tournament we’ll fly to Vancouver for the Canadian Open and we’ll be back on July 23. Soon after we would have to travel to China. So by the end of this month we need to know whether we can go or not. Because at that time all the administrative matters such as tickets, hotel, visa etc. must have been arranged. Therefore the crowd funding project will end on FRIDAY 28 JUNE!. We still are some € 1350 short and it’s going to take quite an effort to reach our target. Unfortunately we didn’t get many more contributions the last few days. So if you still want to give us that last financial push to let us go to China it would be fantastic. You can be sure of one thing: we appreciate the support we have already received from so many people and that also counts for the support we are still hoping to get!

Our crowd funding project: The intermediate score is € 2.600

(5 juni 2013)

Last weekend we reached the level of € 2.600. A fantastic amount, brought together by many people, but we still need the remaining € 1.400 to match the target amount. We have 3 more weeks left to complete the necessary € 4.000 because all filings have to be made before July 5th and before that date all the formalities should have been taken care of. If you still consider to support us; the account number is NL81ABNA0508601045 (BIC code ABNANL2A) in the name of F. de Ruiter. Don’t forget to mention your e-mail address.

The past weeks I have spent a lot of time on the crowd funding project and on looking for potential sponsors. I have had many personal conversations with interested parties, with supporters and journalists and I have written letters and very many e mails. In this hectic period I also had to play the Spanish Open. Samantha and I had decided to play this tournament to keep our match practice.

It happened that the English squad had decided not to participate in the Sudirman Cup as they could only compete in the B group, just like The Netherlands. So the whole English squad was in Madrid. This allowed me to also sign up for the men’s doubles together with Marcus Ellis,  my teammate at 1.BV Mülheim.

In both disciplines we played well but the results were disappointing. We were eliminated early. Once again it was proven that a sports performance, whether good or bad, is always the product of your own talent and extraordinary efforts, physically but also mentally. If anything is not right in your mind, if there is too much trouble, your achievements are inevitably affected. Only if you are physically fit and able to fully concentrate on your sport and tournament you have the best chances to win matches. During this tournament it was physically as well as mentally not OK.

Samantha and I have subsequently evaluated everything and have gone through all the points once again. Monday, after a week of rest, we  have picked up the thread again and have started to work with renewed energy. Nevertheless peripheral issues keep on bothering us and it would be nice if these could be dealt with as quick as possible!

Ons crowdfunding project: € 2600

(5 juni 2013)

Qualified but no money to participate in the World Championships

(6 mei 2013)

As a badminton player there are some tournaments that you should play when you are entitled to participate. Entitled means that your position on the world ranking makes that you are qualified to participate. One of these tournaments is the All England about which I wrote some weeks ago. My partner Samantha and I went there on our own expense and we made it till the last 16. We have achieved a lot of experience and it was great playing a top 10 pair. Partly because of this result but also because of our performances at the Dutch Open, the Bitburger Open, the Norwegian Open and the Irish Open last December we are the 25th pair which has qualified for the World Cup tournament which is held in China from 5 to 11 August.

Super news you would think, but recently we were informed that the Dutch Badminton Federation only has € 1250 available for each player of the National Team to participate in international tournaments. We believe that participating in a World Championships tournament without a proper preparation is no option, so Samantha and I have decided to go to the Spanish Open in Madrid at our own expense again and to use the € 1250 of the Federation for a partly funding of participation in the US Open and Canadian Open in July. Thus we have secured our preparation for the World Champs but regular participation in this event is now further away than ever. We, and with us our parents as our biggest sponsors, can not afford an extra journey to China and the Federation has no extra money available. A very nasty setback because also the Dutch Olympic Committee is watching what is happening at World Championships events. For them the European’s and World’s, as well as the Olympics, count. This is the stage to show yourself as a Dutch pair and I really don’t understand why the Federation has no extra funds available for such an event.

Now we have two options: either we resign ourselves that despite our qualification we have to stay home or we do everything in our power to get funding. In fact resigning is no option for me. A ticket plus accommodation will cost approximately € 2000 per person, so we need a total amount of about € 4000 which is a lot of money. We are aware of that. But we are athletes who are used to work hard for our ideals so why not work for this amount too. We think of demonstrations or clinics, also across the border in Germany, or advertising messages on our shirts or tracksuits. We need all the help we can get and everything is negotiable. I want to emphasize that playing this event is important for our development and that it will help us to make a step forward in the direction of our common goal: qualification for the Rio Games.

If you consider to contribute financially and help us to participate in the World Championships you may leave a message on this site or send an e mail to info@jorritderuiter.com. If you want to deposit a contribution right away the bank account number is NL81ABNA0508601045 Swift code ABNANL2A on the name of De Ruiter. Please mention WC China and your email address so I can thank you. It would also be a help when you refer your Facebook friends and twitter followers to this article on my website.

Anyone who knows me knows that I would never make a call like this one if it weren’t urgent. So please help us to go to China!

Gekwalificeerd maar geen geld om te gaan

(6 mei 2013)

Eén daarvan is bijvoorbeeld de All England.

Did it again!

(11 december 2012)

I am looking back at a special week. The last active days of our coach Gerben Bruijstens, the bad news about the halted contribution of the Dutch Olympic Committee, a TV recording, a radio interview and also the last tournament of 2012, the Carlton Irish Open.

For 3½ years my partners and I have worked with Gerben and as in every cooperation we had ups and downs, but a positive feeling predominates. I am glad that Samantha and I and 2 other Dutch pairs could end his last tournament as the National Coach with a victory.

After the win at the Norwegian International Sam and I had not worked together anymore as she had to recover from a foot injury while I went on training as usual. Still we were top seed at this tournament and of course one wants to live up to that. Fortunately we had the opportunity in the first two rounds to find the right rhythm again because these were not too difficult. In the quarter finals we got some kind of a test for the first time when we were meeting the 6th seeded French pair Gaetan Mittelheisser and Emilie Lefel. Although we started a bit nervously we didn’t allow our opponents to take a lead. We were well matched till 17-17 but then we scored 4 points in a row. In the second game we were in full control and we won that one very easily.

In the men’s doubles Dave and I were top seed as well. With two laborious wins we made it to the quarter finals and then it was all over and out. We played badly and far below our usual level. Our German opponents could benefit and without having been even close to winning a game we lost the match. It made me feel sick!

During such tournaments you can not effort to stay emotional too long as a few hours later another match is scheduled. So I had to put my disappointment away and recharge myself.

In the semi finals Samantha and I were playing Jelle Maas and Iris Tabeling. We won the first game, but at a certain moment in the second game we were facing an 11-17 arrear. Still we managed to come alongside again and then both we and them were getting several game- or match points. Finally at 25-24 we succeeded to exploit another match point and so to secure a place in the finals.

This final, the last of the tournament, was an encounter of two Dutch pairs again. Jacco Arends and Ilse Vaessen were our opponents. I arrived at the venue when the third final of the day was on so I had all the time to quietly prepare myself for the match. Although quietly?!?

In the match preceding ours Scott Evans, the Irishman, was playing Lucas Corvee, a Frenchman. Scott is a good friend on the tour and he is an outspoken guy who shows his emotions quite openly. Sometimes it is really fun to see him play because you never know what to expect. I wasn’t aware that he had lost all his 7 preceding finals and when he won this match in 2 games he almost went crazy. During the interview he was more or less speechless. I was really happy for him, but I still had a job to do.

In the final we had to work very hard. In fact we were well matched. There were long and good rallies but at decisive moments we were slightly better or more consistent. With 22-20 and 21-17 Samantha and I won our second tournament in a row and that gives a great feeling again, a feeling you never get used to.

We are back home now and the next step is to find out how to proceed in the near future. Will we really be banished from the national training centre Papendal in August? Which tournaments can we still play next year? Do we get a new National Coach and who will be the new Technical Director. Many, many questions and time to get answers. Naturally I will try to keep you all informed about the developments. So even though there are no more tournaments the coming weeks you may stay tuned as there are 2 more matches in the German League to come and probably also other things to report on.
