Our crowd funding project: The intermediate score is € 2.600

Last weekend we reached the level of € 2.600. A fantastic amount, brought together by many people, but we still need the remaining € 1.400 to match the target amount. We have 3 more weeks left to complete the necessary € 4.000 because all filings have to be made before July 5th and before that date all the formalities should have been taken care of. The past weeks I have spent a lot of time on the crowd funding project and on looking for potential sponsors. I have had many personal conversations with interested parties, with supporters and journalists and I have written letters and very many e mails. In this hectic period I also had to play the Spanish Open. Samantha and I had decided to play this tournament to keep our match practice.

It happened that the English squad had decided not to participate in the Sudirman Cup as they could only compete in the B group, just like The Netherlands. So the whole English squad was in Madrid. This allowed me to also sign up for the men’s doubles together with Marcus Ellis,  my teammate at 1.BV Mülheim.

In both disciplines we played well but the results were disappointing. We were eliminated early. Once again it was proven that a sports performance, whether good or bad, is always the product of your own talent and extraordinary efforts, physically but also mentally. If anything is not right in your mind, if there is too much trouble, your achievements are inevitably affected. Only if you are physically fit and able to fully concentrate on your sport and tournament you have the best chances to win matches. During this tournament it was physically as well as mentally not OK.

Samantha and I have subsequently evaluated everything and have gone through all the points once again. Monday, after a week of rest, we  have picked up the thread again and have started to work with renewed energy. Nevertheless peripheral issues keep on bothering us and it would be nice if these could be dealt with as quick as possible!

Gold in Madrid!

After quite some silver medals we finally got the highly coveted Gold one in Spain during the last tournament of this season.

Late Thursday night Dave Khodabux, Jelle Maas and I landed in Madrid. As no transport had been arranged we had to take a taxi to our hotel. A thirty minute drive. The driver spoke as much English as I speak Spanish, rather dramatic. We passed a huge football stadium and Dave thought it was Barnabéu, the home base of Real Madrid. Our driver reacted immediately and rather irritated: he made clear it was not Barnabéu but the Estadio Vicente Calderón of Atlético Madrid. Obviously he was a fan and the rest of the journey we kept our mouths shut.

As we were first seeded our first match was Friday evening. We had quite a tough draw so we knew that we had to work hard from the beginning. In the first match we played two Danes and we won this one in two rather easy games because of a well concentrated and varied playing style.   

Saturday would be a busy day with a quarter final and, provided we performed well, also a semi final scheduled. In the quarter final we met two Germans, Niesner and Zander, who played very well at the Dutch International a few weeks ago. This time they didn’t seem to believe in their own abilities and we won this match in 2 games again.

In the semi final the French Labar and Quere were our opponents. Two years ago we had met them at the Czech International and than we lost in 3 games, so we were warned. Apart from a small arrear at the beginning, the first game went very well and we won with 21-16. The second game was more difficult. We arrived at a score of 18-20 and it looked like we had to play a third game but than we managed to score four consecutive points and to secure our third “Challenge final” this year. The only remaining question was against whom.

Jacco Arends and Jelle Maas played their semi final later that evening and in a thrilling 3 game match they placed themselves for the final. So this meant that we could treat the Spanish public to a Dutch get together on Sunday.

It was a long and nice match with many excellent rallies. As we know each other to the core you never know if it will be a good match but fortunately it was. The first game we won with 21-16 and in the second we took the lead and kept it till 18-14. But then they came back to 21-20. This is a position where Jacco and Jelle often prove to be strong and persistent and with 3 more points in a row they won this game. In the third game we were well matched till the break but after that we managed to score 7 points in a row and we created a gap which couldn’t be bridged anymore. A wonderful feeling, especially after having lost the previous 3 finals this year. Winning is GREAT!

The season is not completely over yet because next Monday I leave for PĂ©cs in Hungary where my club Duinwijck will play for the European Club Championships. As we conquered the cup last year we are seeded first and we are meeting clubs from Poland, The Czech Republic and Luxemburg. Quite a tough draw but on the other hand no elite clubs from Denmark and Russia. I am very much looking forward to this tournament.

Finally I like to mention one of my big examples who played his very final international match today. Unfortunately but understandable Nathan Robertson puts an end to his impressive career. He is almost 35 and he hasn’t qualified for the Games in London. With an Olympic silver medal and with World, European and Common Wealth Games titles on his honours list he is as far as I am concerned one of the best (mixed) double players of all times with a fantastic smart and much admired playing style. For me it was an honour to play him last January at the Swedish Open. I am glad that I still had that opportunity just in time.

Goud in Madrid!

Na een hoop bij elkaar gespeelde zilveren medailles werd het in Spanje tijdens het laatste toernooi van dit seizoen dan eindelijk eens die felbegeerde kleur: GOUD!

Donderdagavond laat landde ik, samen met Dave en Jelle, in de Spaanse hoofdstad. Er was geen transport geregeld dus we pakten een taxi naar het hotel. Een klein half uurtje rijden. Het Engels van de chauffeur was net zo goed als mijn Spaans, vrij dramatisch. We reden langs een giga stadion en Dave dacht gelijk aan de thuisbasis van Real Madrid Bernabéu, maar de chauffeur reageerde direct en lichtelijk geïrriteerd dat het niet het Bernabéu was, maar het stadion van Atlético Madrid, Estadio Vicente Calderón. Een die hard fan kennelijk! We hebben maar niks meer gezegd!

Omdat we eerstgeplaatst waren hoefden we pas ’s avonds in actie te komen. De loting was pittig en we wisten dat we vanaf het begin af aan er tegenaan moesten. Onze eerste partij speelden we tegen twee Denen. Met goed geconcentreerd en gevarieerd spel wonnen we in twee vrij eenvoudige games.

Zaterdag zou een drukkere dag worden want toen stonden zowel de kwart als de halve finale op het programma, mits het goed bleef gaan uiteraard. En dat ging het gelukkig. Onze Duitse tegenstanders die op de Dutch International een sterk toernooi speelden, leken vanaf het begin af aan al niet echt in de overwinning te geloven en we wonnen ook deze partij in twee games.

In de halve finale speelden we tegen Labar en Quere uit Frankrijk. Twee jaar terug speelden we in Tsjechië tegen ze en toen verloren we in drie games. We waren dus gewaarschuwd. De eerste game verliep, na een kleine achterstand aan het begin, voorspoedig. Met 21-16 trokken we aan het langste eind. De tweede game ging moeizamer. Een achterstand van 18-20 werd weggewerkt en we wisten de volgende vier punten te maken. De derde Challenge finale van dit jaar was een feit, alleen tegen wie?

Omdat ook Jacco en Jelle hun halve finale in drie spannende games wisten te winnen, mochten we het Spaanse publiek zondag dus op een Nederlands onderonsje trakteren. Het werd een lange en mooie wedstrijd met veel goede rallies. Omdat we elkaar door en door kennen is het altijd maar afwachten of er een goede partij uitkomt, maar gelukkig was dit wel het geval. De eerste game wisten we naar ons toe te trekken met 21-16. In de tweede game stonden we met 18-14 en 21-20 voor, maar Jacco en Jelle zijn dan altijd sterk en wonnen de tweede game. In de derde game ging het tot halverwege gelijk op, maar na de break konden we zeven punten op rij maken en was er een groot gat geslagen. Met 21-13 pakten we de derde game en daarmee de titel op de Spaanse Open (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_International). Een heerlijk gevoel vooral omdat we de vorige drie finales dit kalenderjaar verloren hadden. Winnen is GAAF!

Het was nog niet helemaal het laatste toernooi, want aanstaande maandag vertrek ik samen met mijn teamgenoten van Duinwijck naar Hongarije om de Europa Cup te spelen. We zijn eerstgeplaatst vanwege de titel van vorig jaar en spelen tegen clubs uit Polen, Tsjechië en Luxemburg. Een pittige loting, maar in ieder geval geen topclubs uit Denemarken en Rusland. Ik heb er in ieder geval erg veel zin in.

Als laatste wil ik nog even stilstaan bij één van mijn grote voorbeelden die vandaag zijn allerlaatste internationale wedstrijd heeft gespeeld. Nathan Robertson gaat er helaas maar begrijpelijk mee stoppen. Hij wordt bijna 35 en heeft zich niet geplaatst voor de Spelen van Londen. Met Olympisch zilver, WK, EK en Commonwealth Games titels op zijn erelijst wat mij betreft één van de beste (gemengd)dubbelspelers aller tijden met een ontzettend slimme en bekeken speelstijl. Ik vond het een eer om afgelopen januari tijdens de Swedish Open tegen hem te spelen en ben blij dat ik dat (net op tijd) heb mee kunnen maken!  Klik hier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxB8zQVVj38) voor één van de mooiste momenten uit zijn carrière, de halve finale van de Olympische Spelen in Athene!
