Nu wel geselecteerd

Vanmiddag werd op Papendal de selectie voor de EK mannen en vrouwenteams bekend gemaakt. Bondscoach Gerben Bruijstens deelde mede dat ik geselecteerd ben, samen met nog 9 andere jongens. Ik ben hier heel erg blij mee, vooral vanwege het feit dat ik er twee jaar geleden in Polen niet bij mocht zijn. Destijds had ik een Carlton contract terwijl Badminton Nederland een contract sloot met Yonex. Alleen Yonex spelers werden naar Warschau uitgezonden. Het was de grootste teleurstelling uit mijn topsportcarrière!

Gelukkig ligt die tijd nu achter mij en kunnen we ons gaan richten op dit ontzettend leuke toernooi dat dit jaar georganiseerd wordt in onze eigen hoofdstad en mijn geboorteplaats Amsterdam. De overige geselecteerde jongens zijn:

Eric Pang, Dicky Palyama, Jordy Hilbink, Nick Fransman, Koen Ridder, Ruud Bosch, Dave Khodabux, Jacco Arends en Jelle Maas.

Bij de vrouwen bestaat het team uit:

Yao Jie, Judith Meulendijks, Patty Stolzenbach, Josephine Wentholt, Lotte Jonathans, Paulien van Dooremalen, Selena Piek, Iris Tabeling, Samantha Barning en Ilse Vaessen.

Eric, Dicky, Jie en Judith hebben een week gekregen om te beslissen of ze mee willen doen. Uiteraard hoop ik voor het Nederlandse badminton dat ze de uitnodiging accepteren!

A win in the League and Estonia coming up

Yesterday evening we played our last home match in the League and my former club van Zijderveld from Amstelveen was our opponent. Quite unexpectedly it became a big win with a 7-1 score.

In the men’s doubles Chris Bruil was my partner. We made a slow start and we were too passive and consequently we lost the first game with a big difference. In the second game we got a better control although we still played too defensively. In all 3 games I have smashed 5 times at the most. On the other side of the net Lester Oey and Robin Tabeling, our opponents, were smashing like hell but they didn’t manage to really get through our defence. So the second and third game could be decided in our favour without getting at risk.

On the other court the ladies doubles was also won, in 2 games. After the two men’s singles had been won by Duinwijck and also Akvile Stapusaityte had decided her ladies single in her favour we had taken a very comfortable lead. In the second ladies singles substitute Annemiek Groenewoud did her utmost versus Alida Chen. Especially in the second game she offered good resistance but she couldn’t keep Alida from scoring a point for van Zijderveld which at the end turned out to be the only one.

The mixed doubles of Eva Krab and myself versus Norbert van Barneveld en Georgy van Soerland was not exactly spectacular. There were hardly any rallies and half way in both games we had a comfortable lead. With two times 21-14 we won this match. On the other court the confrontation between Betty Timmerman and Chris Bruil and Elisa Piek and Robin Tabeling was much more interesting. After having lost the first game Betty and Chris got a better focus and won the second game. The decisive third game still became an exciting one but the Duinwijck pair finally drew the longest straw.

So a 7-1 win but it didn’t effect the score in the League very much. Duinwijck is still third and will travel to Hoensbroek next week with a severely battered team for the last regular match versus Victoria. A number of my team members as well as myself will then be in Estonia for the first EBU tournament of this season. Next Thursday we’ll fly from Schiphol to Tallinn via Frankfurt. Last year it was extremely cold in this former Soviet country and, to be honest, I hope for a nice sunny 25 Celsius this time but I am afraid I will be disappointed.

This is going to be the first tournament with my new mixed doubles partner Samantha Barning. During the trainings in the past weeks we played some very good matches together and I am really looking forward to playing an international tournament again after 2 months of purely training at Papendal. Winst in de competitie, Estland op komst

Gisteravond stond de laatste thuiswedstrijd van de reguliere competitie op het programma en wel tegen mijn oude club Van Zijderveld Amstelveen. Het werd een onverwacht dikke winstpartij, want we wonnen met maar liefst 7-1.

In de herendubbel speelde ik samen met Chris Bruil. We startten te langzaam en te passief. Logisch gevolg was een ruime nederlaag in de eerste game. Vanaf de tweede game kregen we meer controle alhoewel er nog steeds te veel op de verdediging werd gespeeld. Als ik 5 smashes in de hele wedstrijd geslagen heb dan is dat veel geweest. Ondertussen smashten Lester Oey en Robin Tabeling er heftig op los, maar ze kwamen er niet meer echt doorheen. De tweede en ook de derde game wisten we te winnen zonder in gevaar te komen.

Ook de damesdubbel ging in twee games gewonnen en omdat de beide herenenkelpartijen dit keer wel naar Duinwijck gingen en Akvile haar single ook won, stonden we op een wel heel comfortabele voorsprong. Invalster Annemiek Groenewoud deed haar stinkende best om een goede partij neer te zetten tegen Alida Chen en dat lukte ook wel vooral in de tweede game. Helaas kon zij niet tegenhouden dat Alida het enige winstpuntje (zo bleek later) voor Van Zijderveld scoorde.

De mix van Eva en mij tegen Norbert van Barneveld en Georgy van Soerland was niet zo spectaculair. Rallies waren er haast niet en we konden steeds halverwege de game het gat slaan. Met twee keer 21-14 wonnen we deze wedstrijd. De mix naast ons was een stuk interessanter. Betty Timmerman en Chris Bruil speelden tegen Elisa Piek en Robin Tabeling. Nadat ze de eerste game krap aan verloren, kwamen ze in de tweede game beter in hun spel en wonnen die ook. De derde game werd uiteindelijk toch nog spannend maar de Duinwijckers trokken aan het langste eind.

Een 7-1 winst, maar de stand in de eredivisie veranderde niet heel veel. Duinwijck staat nog steeds derde en zal volgende week met een zwaar gehavend team naar Victoria in Hoensbroek afreizen omdat ik en nog wat spelers met mij in Estland zitten voor het eerste EBU toernooi van dit seizoen. We vertrekken aanstaande donderdag vanaf Schiphol om via Frankfurt naar Tallinn te vliegen. Vorig jaar was het steen en steenkoud in dit voormalige Sovjet land, ik hoop eerlijk gezegd nu op een zonnetje en een graad of 25 maar dat zal wel tegenvallen ben ik bang. Dit is het eerste toernooi voor mij met mijn nieuwe mixpartner Samantha Barning en we hebben al best wat goede trainingspartijen neer kunnen zetten de afgelopen weken. Ik heb er ontzettend veel zin in om uberhaupt weer een internationaal toernooi te kunnen spelen na twee maanden trainen op Papendal. First defeat Duinwijck 1

Yesterday evening we had the away match versus Amersfoort. At home we achieved a 6-2 win but this time we were missing Karina de Wit who is pregnant.

As usual we started with the men’s doubles. Koen and I met Jelle Maas and Joely Residay. Koen is not yet completely fit and could hardly train the past week. Still we made it a good match. The first game was fine and also in the second game we never really lost control.

Simultaneously Akvile Stapusaityte and Eva Krab were playing the ladies doubles versus Eefje Muskens and Maartje Verheul. During this match our ladies did get chances but at decisive moments the Amersfoort pair was better. Intermediate score 1-1.

Erik Meijs met Edwin Ekiring in the first men’s single and he played well but it wasn’t easy at all. After having won the first game he started well in the second and it looked like he had nothing to worry about but then he lost his advantage and Edwin forced him to play a third game. During this game a very unfortunate finishing stroke of Edwin put the shuttle in Erik’s eye but he recovered quickly and he kept his concentration. He finally won the game and the match.

Substitute Betty Timmerman found herself in competition with Kirsten van der Valk and she played more than well in the first game but finally she couldn’t get the profits. In the second game the candle slowly died and Kirsten could strike.

In the second men’s single Jerry Natenstedt played in fact a very good match versus Nick Fransman who was keen on revenge after his loss in Haarlem. Where the first game was still decided in favour of Jerry it was Nick who took control in the next two games and who claimed the win.

In the second ladies single Akvile met Gayle Mahulette and it became a match with ups and downs. Akvile kept her best performance for the last stage and she won the third game convincingly. This meant a 3-3 intermediate score.

The sting was in the tail of this league confrontation. In the mixed doubles Eva and I had trouble in finding the right rhythm in the first game versus Jelle Maas and Eefje Muskens and we lost this game. With hard work and the right fighting spirit we managed to decide the second game in our favour but in the beginning of the third game we lost too many points and we couldn’t bridge this gap anymore. Eefje and Jelle deserved to win this match.

Finally the occasional mixed double of Erik Meijs and Betty Timmerman was won by the Amersfoort pair Joely Residay and Maartje Verheul putting the final score on 5-3, our first loss of this season. Somehow this requires a different mindset. I have thought it over and I must say: I don’t like it ONE bit.

Next weekend there are two home matches scheduled. Saturday at 7 PM we’ll meet Roosteren and on Sunday at 2 PM Velo will be our opponent. It’s going to be all hands on deck so please come to the Duinwijck hall and support us!

Eerste verlies voor Duinwijck 1

Gisteravond stond de kraker tegen Amersfoort op het programma. De thuiswedstrijd wisten wij met 6-2 te winnen, maar gisteravond speelden wij zonder Karina die in verwachting is.

We begonnen met de herendubbel. Koen en ik speelden tegen Jelle Maas en Joely Residay. Koen is nog steeds niet helemaal fit en had de afgelopen week amper getraind. Toch konden we een goede wedstrijd neerzetten. Vooral de eerste game was prima en eigenlijk kwamen we ook in de tweede game nooit echt in gevaar.

In de damesdubbel van Akvile en Eva tegen Eefje Muskens en Maartje Verheul lagen er zeker kansen, maar op de beslissende momenten waren de speelsters van Amersfoort scherper. Tussenstand 1-1.

Erik Meijs speelde een goede wedstrijd tegen Edwin Ekiring. Nadat hij de eerste game met goed spel won en in de tweede game ruim voorstond leek er geen vuiltje aan de lucht. Toch verspeelde hij de voorsprong en moest er een derde game gespeeld worden. Een ongelukkige afmaakbal van Edwin belandde nog in het oog van Erik maar hij bleef geconcentreerd spelen en won de derde game en daarmee de partij.

Invalster Betty Timmerman speelde een meer dan goede eerste game tegen Kirsten van der Valk maar kon niet voorkomen dat ze in de verlenging aan het korste eind trok. In de tweede game was de koek op en kon Amersfoort toeslaan.

Jerry Natenstedt speelde eigenlijk weer een hele goede wedstrijd tegen Nick Fransman. Vorige keer wist Jerry in twee games te winnen, maar Nick was gebrand op revanche. Toch ging de eerste game naar Jerry, maar in game twee en drie herstelde Nick zich knap en won de wedstrijd.

Akvile speelde in haar wedstrijd tegen Gayle Mahulette een wedstrijd met ups en downs. Ze bewaarde het beste spel voor het laatst want de derde game won ze overtuigend. Nog steeds een gelijke tussenstand, 3-3.

In de mix hadden Eva en ik moeite om het ritme te vinden in de eerste game tegen Jelle en Eefje. Deze ging dan ook ruim verloren. Door hard te werken en strijdlustig te blijven wisten we de tweede game te winnen, maar helaas kwamen we in de derde game aan het begin te ver achter om weer bij te komen. Eefje en Jelle wonnen verdiend deze wedstrijd.

En omdat ook de gelegenheidsmix van Erik en Betty in twee games naar Joely en Maartje ging kwam de einduitslag op 5-3 voor Amersfoort en dus ons eerste verlies van het seizoen. Best even wennen is dat en ik heb er even over nagedacht: ik vind het maar niks!

Aankomend weekend wacht een dubbelweekend met twee thuiswedstrijden. Zaterdag om 19.00u tegen Roosteren en zondag om 14.00u tegen Velo. Kom dus allemaal naar de Duinwijckhal toe om ons te steunen!

We have a new technical director

Yesterday afternoon at a press conference at Papendal, the Dutch National Olympic training Centre, the board of the Dutch Badminton Association, presented the new technical director. As from January 1st Eline Coene will be the new boss of the Top sport section.

It will be quite strange having to get used to a new director because in all the years I have been active as a player it always was Martijn van Dooremalen who was in charge at and around the badminton courts. So it was quite a special day for badminton in the Netherlands. It’s obvious that I’m very curious about Eline’s plans for the future. As a player but also as chairman of the players council I am looking forward to work with her. One thing is clear: it is not an easy job she applied for.

We hebben een nieuwe TD

Gistermiddag werd op een persconferentie op Papendal de nieuwe technisch directeur van Badminton Nederland gepresenteerd. Eline Coene gaat per 1 januari aan de slag en zal dus de nieuwe baas worden van de sectie topsport.

Het zal best even wennen worden want in al die jaren dat ik al meeloop als speler weet ik niet beter dan dat Martijn de leiding heeft op en rond de badmintonbaan. Het was dus best een bijzondere dag voor het badminton in Nederland. Uiteraard ben ik erg nieuwsgierig naar Eline haar plannen en ik kijk uit naar een goede samenwerking met haar als speler en als voorzitter van de spelersraad.

Oudejaarsaanbieding op clinics

Ook dit jaar heb ik weer een speciale december maand oudejaars aanbieding op badmintonclinics met kortingen tot 20%. Decision on the mixed doubles

There is little news these days. This calendar year I won’t play international tournaments anymore due to the top sport budget exceedance and I am not able to finance anymore tournaments myself. Of course this is very annoying because now we restrict ourselves to training at Papendal while international tournaments are very important to find out where you stand compared to others.

But like Johan Cruijff always says: “It’s simple, every disadvantage has it’s advantage”. So maybe it is not that bad at all to have an extra long training period and to start the new year in a top condition. And this new year I will start with two events. As you know the past months we have experimented with the mixed doubles combinations and now our coach has cut the knot. Until the summer of 2012 I will definitely play together with Samantha Barning. This means that we will play 5 or 6 tournaments together in which we can show our performance. In the summer of 2012 all mixed doubles will be evaluated on the progress they have made. Then it will be decided if the pairs can be maintained or, if necessary, have to be changed for the next period of two years. In the summer of 2014 it should be clear which pairs can actually have a shot at an Olympic ticket. It is an ambitious plan of the technical staff and I really hope that it will deliver new successes in the mixed doubles. At least I will work hard, together with Samantha, to attain this objective.

This weekend we have two league matches. I will write a report on those matches later on.
