Silver medal at Yonex Dutch Open. In spite of or thanks to new scoring system?

(16 oktober 2014)

The Yonex Dutch Open is the only Grand Prix tournament in the Netherlands. Every year in October it is organized in the Top Sport Arena in Almere. This year the Dutch Open was one of the tournaments that was appointed to experiment with the new scoring system 5 games to 11 without setting. It was also one of the last opportunities to test this system internationally. Looking back it was a nice tournament fortunately attracting large crowds, especially in the weekend, which led to an enthusiastic and occasionally exuberant atmosphere. An attractive and stimulating environment for the players to put up a tremendous performance. An added plus was the smart way the games were shown on Badminton Europe TV and to millions of TV viewers particularly in Asia.

Due to injuries Samantha and I couldn’t participate last year but now we joined in and were seeded seventh. The mixed doubles tournament was quite strong. A number of top 25 mixed doubles registered, among which a large delegation from badminton mecca Indonesia.

In the first rounds our way of playing was a matter of building up level. Nevertheless, we managed to win the first two rounds in 5 and 4 games respectively. On Friday we played the quarter finals and we had the first real confrontation.

Our opponents were Yun Lung Chan and Ying Suet Tse from Hong Kong, the numbers 4 of the seeding list. This pair has performed well this year and is currently 25th in the world ranking. Among other good performances they reached the semi-finals at the Korea Open Premier Super Series during which, for example, they defeated the couple Adcock from England which currently is 5th in the ranking.
We succeeded to win this match in five games and that was an example of a mental victory, an aspect which is very important in the new scoring system. After we had won the first game by 11-10, we lost game 2 and 3 with 4-11 and in the fourth game we survived a matchpoint. In this particular rally we were very much forced to go on the defensive, but also with some luck, we were able to score the winning point. In game five we could finally push through and we won by 11-3. I am sure that again the mental factor was decisive.

In the semifinals on Super Saturday we met two “acquaintances”, the Russians Durkin and Vislova. Earlier this year we played this pair in the quarterfinals of the European Championship in Russia which was the fight for a European Championship medal. Then we won in a long lasting match of 3 games to 21 and we went out of our minds. Now we won again in three games, only this match was much shorter now, only 26 minutes, and less exciting. But it meant a place in the final and there was every reason to go crazy.

And then Sunday, the day of the finals of the Dutch Open. The atmosphere in the Arena is very good, co-driven by the Indonesians in the audience who have countrymen represented in 4 finals. After a good briefing and analysis by our coach Kim we start our warming-up. We are the second match of the day. After the prize-giving ceremony of the women’s singles final, we are called and with loud applause we enter the arena.

From the first moment on we can play our own game and take a big lead. We even get to 10-7 but nevertheless we do not win that game, 10-11. Still we do play a good game and we manage to keep that level in game 2 and 3 which we win. In the fourth game we take a 6-3 lead. Than a long rally follows in which we are forced to go on the defensive. The Indonesians play a flat smash which should have gone out over the back line but we are in the way of the shuttle and just cannot avoid it. Lucky for them. After this rally we twice work careless and it’s a tie. From this moment on the Indonesians are getting increasingly confident that a fifth game is possible. We can still play the right game just like we want to but ….we are just too eager. We seem to have lost our patience in the rallies, the way of building them up and finishing them off. That’s how we lose the fourth game. Somewhat affected we start game five and soon we are far behind. In this scoring system it’s almost impossible to make that up again and that is how we lose the game and the match.

The first few days I have had a bad feeling about this final, but on the other hand I’m also very proud of our performance during this tournament and the level that we have achieved in this final battle. Our coach confirmed my own feelings: “you both played your best badminton today, the best match you two ever played together”.

Moreover, we cannot be and shall not be disappointed too long because next week the French Open Super Series in Paris is scheduled. Again we play Indonesians but this time again with the familiar best of 3 games to 21. Although we had good results with the experimental scoring system during the Dutch Open I remain an opponent of its implementation. All the arguments against which I mentioned in my previous blog are still valid except the one that matches will be shorter. Considering the fact that there are 9 minutes break off time at a 5 game match it will be a matter of time that matches will easily last over an hour!! In between my matches I have spoken many people in the audience and it was remarkable that most of them were not enthusiastic about the new scoring system. People find it messy and dislike the many intervals which kill the dynamics of a match. I hope the BWF is going to take all the feedback seriously and above all that they will listen to the players who, with the exception of a few, are against the implementation of this system.

Halve finale NK

(4 februari 2013)

No success during Dutch Open

(16 oktober 2011)

It is a turbulent week so far. On Tuesday the players group was informed that the Technical Director wouldn’t stay on and that the board of the Badminton Association has the intention to offer him another position. As chairman of the players council I get a call on this from the the president of the Association at noon. I am “amazed” and the whole group is far from happy.

Especially the timing of this decision is not good. The Olympic qualification process is currently underway and a change of Technical Director in the course of this process is not exactly pleasant. The rest of that day is filled with phone calls. It becomes clear that all players are definitely not behind the Boards decision. The President, Ted van der Meer, and I schedule a meeting on Wednesday after my mixed doubles match at the Dutch Open. At this meeting where both the President and I are supported by our deputies, I elucidate the point of view of the players group and make clear that we are far from happy with this action.  We understand that the Association is seeking innovation but we don’t want this during the qualification process.

In the meeting it ultimately becomes clear that it is all a misunderstanding. The President says that from the beginning he had the intention to replace the TD after April 30th 2012. But this was not clearly communicated in the press release of Tuesday. Altogether it was a positive outcome of this meeting for the players. We got what we wanted and after these hectic days we could focus again on what it is all about, playing badminton.

Oh yes…And then there were my own matches to come. Because of all the turmoil I had no feeling whatsoever about having to play a tournament. I tried to get back that feeling by going to the venue early but that didn’t really help.

The mixed doubles with Ilse Vaessen went well at times but we failed to make it difficult for our Ukrainian opponents. I also lost the men’s doubles with Dave. However we played a good first game we still lost it in an unfortunate way, 21-19. I had high hopes for a third game and even a win against these guys but in the second game we didn’t play cleverly at all. We followed them too much in the flat rallies and we completely lost the overview. Result: no chances to win and end of tournament. We lacked the right focus at the right time. Very disappointing of course because especially now in our own country I had very much liked to continue the way of playing we showed in the past tournaments.

Every disadvantage has also an advantage. Because of the elimination I was able to join the ceremony at the Johan Cruyff University in Amsterdam where I got my Bachelor degree. Earlier this year I finished my studies Sports Marketing and now finally I also have the coveted paper diploma.

Next week we will continue with the Dutch league matches as we will play against Van Zundert Velo in Wateringen.

Report of Dutch Championships

(6 februari 2011)

This year the National Championships Tournament only lasted for me until Saturday evening late. Bad stomach complaints made that I couldn’t play on the day of the finals.

The Saturday started early with a mixed double. I liked that very much. Together with Paulien van Dooremalen I played my first “mixed” tournament since almost a year. The first round was a nice one. We could get used to the hall and the shuttles and we won our match quite easily. Also in the men’s double we had a simple opening round. In the quarter finals Paulien and I met Jelle Maas and Iris Tabeling.  A tough match because these two are well tuned and have been playing very good matches lately. In the first game we had no chance whatsoever and it was noticeable that we both had not played a mixed for a long time. Also in the second game it was difficult but with hard work and fighting we managed to get a third game. In this third game we found the right rhythm and we decided the match in our favour. A very nice result and in line with our seeding. I think that there is potential in this mixed doubles.

In the mean time the breaks between the matches were getting shorter and we had to play almost continuously. In the quarter finals of the men’s double we really had to work for the result, also because Dave had told me not to be very concentrated and to have difficulties with recharging himself after his quarter final in his mixed doubles. Fortunately we won in two games and we could both start preparing ourselves for the semi finals in the mixed doubles against each other. This match was also scheduled for Saturday evening.

In the first game of this match we kept the score close until 17-16, but then Dave and Samantha took the lead and won the first game. The second game was a repetition of the quarter final against Jelle and Iris. Hard work and fighting for every single point made us win this game. In the final game it was clear that Dave and Samantha have played a lot more matches together. They played very well and they found the empty corners at our side. With a convincing score we were defeated in the semi final.

After the match I had a doping check. Funny enough it is always the same couple that is checking me. Of course I had to drink a hell of a lot to make me p and one hour later I was released. After a cooling down I could finally drive home at 10.30 PM. On the way home my stomach started to make trouble. Once at home it became worse and I really felt ill. I didn’t sleep a wink. The toilet was my best mate last night. It is really “shit” that the tournament had to end this way for me and of course for Dave as well.

I hope that I will recover quickly because I can’t wait to start training again!

Verslag NK

(6 februari 2011)

National Championships

(4 februari 2011)

Today the National Championships tournament starts in Almere. Because of my Dutch ranking I don’t have to play qualifying matches so for me the tournament will begin tomorrow morning.

In the mixed doubles my partner Paulien van Dooremalen and I are seeded fourth. It’s about a year ago that I played my last mixed double in a tournament and I like it very much to be able to play in this discipline again. Paulien and I have never played together before but thanks to our individual positions in the national ranking we got our seeding. Tomorrow morning at 10.10 AM we play our first match against a pair from the qualifying tournament and I am really looking forward to it.

In the men’s double Dave and I are seeded second. Last year we were runner up in the final against Jacco and Jelle but a repetition of this final is not possible. If we manage to get as far as the semi finals they will be our opponents. This is always a bit strange because we play against this pair a hundred times a year during the training sessions and we know each other very well. So it would be a kind of super training match. But at first the 1st rounds to start with. For us the men’s doubles tournament starts at 1.50 PM and again against qualifiers.

Wish me good luck!

NK

(4 februari 2011)

Wish me good luck!
