Voorbeschouwing wedstrijden Nederlanders op WK: damesenkelspel

(1 augustus 2011)

World Championships preview of the matches of Dutch players: Men’s singles

(31 juli 2011)

As you know we have had the draw for the World Championships competition in London. During this edition no less than 14 Dutch players are scheduled. Who are they meeting and what are their chances. The next few days I will give a short preview per event. Today the men’s singles.

In the men’s singles we have 2 participants who will uphold the Dutch honor: Eric Pang and Dicky Palyama.

In the first round Eric meets the Thai Boonsak Ponsana who is seeded 10th. For many years Ponsana belongs to the best men’s singles players of the world. It is going to be a difficult task for Eric. Both men have met each other 3 times before and our National Champion never came close to even winning a game. So it is about time for a change. If Eric wins this match his next opponent in round 2 will probably be Wong Choong Hann.

Dicky Palyama has drawn well for the first round. He meets the Canadian Stefan Wojcikiewicz. Dicky and Stefan played against each other two times and in both cases Dicky was the winner. The last time was in May at the Morocco International when Dicky won with 22-20 and 21-18. That must have been an exciting confrontation. Let’s hope that this upcoming match will be easier. If he wins his next opponent is the present world champion Chen Jin.

Voorbeschouwing wedstrijden Nederlanders op WK: herenenkelspel

(31 juli 2011)

Tough draw World Champs

(25 juli 2011)

The draw for the World Championships in London has been published.

Just like last year Dave and I will face a strong Asian combination. On Monday the 8th of August at 7.20 PM we will play against the Chinese Hong Wei and Shen Ye. About a year ago during the Bitburger Open in Saarbrucken we also played a very strong Chinese couple and we managed to surprise them. That is our goal during this wonderful tournament as well. We have two more weeks of preparation left and we will do our utmost to give them a hard time on court!

Last year I made a preview for each discipline and I will do the same this year. So stay tuned this week! The draw can be found at www.tournamentsoftware.com

Zware WK loting

(25 juli 2011)

Penalty shooting not a big success

(23 juli 2011)

A week of tough training but with lots of fun lies behind me. The second week in preparation for the World Championships was a good one.

Every day the training sessions are getting a bit tougher which is necessary with the World Championships to be done in a couple of weeks. Many exercises are based on explosiveness. Exercises in double combinations where you have to move rapidly forward and backwards from the middle of your side of the court playing a flat rally in which you try to get the shuttle on the ground by means of a net push or smash. We also do a lot of consistency training. From a service position we have to keep the shuttle low the first 3 to 4 strokes and then finish the rally off. Fortunately we make good progress in these exercises.

The Friday morning training was dominated by the so-called “Belgiums game”. A true double-game. You can play it either on a half or on a whole court. The back court is out and so is the front court unless you play the shuttle via the upper lining of the net. Then you do get a point. Actually you only cover the big service area of the court. As we were with seven guys we could play a small tournament. Everyone played one match against somebody else having one period of rest. The one with the least points had to clean the hall at the end of the training. As this is my favorite game I didn’t have to worry. I got enough points. But then round two came on the whole court. This is coming close to a single game and the people who know me well know that I played my last real single games when I was a teenager. The punishment this time? The two guys with the fewest points had to play a decisive game. The winner of this game should do a 2 ½ minute “wall sitting exercise” and the loser was the target for an “assy” standing in a handball goal waiting for the other guys to take penalties and hit him on the bum. Of course we all looked forward to the end of the game. It was Jelle Kelderhuis who won the goalie part and we, with a grin on our faces, were ready to give our loyal sparring partner the full blast and a blue ass. Well, I have never seen such bad penalties before, what a group of amateurs we were. One hit the ceiling of the hall and the other hardly reached the goal. The result of this remarkable penalty series was no hit at all. Jelle laughed his head off while Jim Middelburg had a bad time doing his wall sitting. We really have to practise for a next time because this was too easy for the loser of the tournament.

Monday is the draw of the WC in Kuala Lumpur. Last year Dave and I had bad luck when we were meeting Fang/Lee from Chinese Taipei. Hopefully we find some weaker opponents this year. I‘ll get back to you early next week!

Balletje trappen geen succes

(23 juli 2011)

Back on track

(16 juli 2011)

Monday was the day. A wonderful holiday came to an end and a new training season at Papendal started. And that was OK because 2½ weeks without badminton was necessary but also enough. I had started to miss the daily routine.

The next four weeks are dedicated to the World Championships from 8 to 14 August in London. Along with Dave I have qualified for this prestigious tournament where the best players of the world meet. This year it is even more special as the venue will be the same as for the Olympic Games next year.

This first week was one of trial and error. At the end of the first day after a 2½ week break you feel about every muscle in your body and then you have 4 more days to go. Not a very pleasant prospect at that moment. The first few days the exercises were primarily aimed at restoring confidence in our strokes and the moving around on court. Apart from that my general condition needed some attention. I had to get rid of the gyros and souvlaki surplus as soon as possible so, after a long time, we went to run together Tuesday afternoon. I had almost forgotten that the running track at Papendal is blue. It was excellent to actually run away the pain in my muscles after the previous training sessions.

The trainings on Wednesday and Thursday I liked best. The focus was on racket skills, two against two exercises and even on certain match strategies. On Friday morning, not quite unexpectedly, the well known man with the hammer came along and I was relieved when the clock hit noon.

This weekend I use to recover in order to get ready for the training sessions of next week and hopefully for making big steps forward.
