Succession of Mr. Kim

Monday it was officially announced that our coach and trainer Mr. Kim will not renew his contract. Bad news, but in the selection we were aware that this was going to happen. The last few days much was written and speculated about the succession of Mr. Kim. Lots of Dutch names were mentioned but I honestly say that I consider it most unlikely that the successor to Mr. Kim will be a Dutchman. We, the players, have recently discussed what requirements the new coach and trainer should meet. I will give a brief profile:

– First of all, the successor must be highly motivated and enthusiastic;

Apart from that he or she should

– be an European;

– be an asset on both technical and tactical level and create great variation in the trainings and be able to develop exercises and participate in them (think of multi-shuttle drills);

– make a good team with the other coach;

– be prepared to take on administrative tasks such as creating training schedules, compose special rehabilitation training schedules, consult with medical staff, etc.);

– be a specialist in doubles and mixed doubles;

– have proven experience with the mental aspects of  topsport;

– be open to external coaches, who want to encourage development of individual players;

Experience as coach of a national selection is desirable but not necessary. This means that it does not have to be someone who has been in the training business for many years. Also a former top player would be able to help us;

Of course this is only a brief summary of the features the new coach should have according to the players, but the main points are included. Now we hope that Badminton the Netherlands will make every possible effort to find a new coach, because when in May 2011 the Olympic qualifying period begins, we will need him / her very badly.

Opvolging voor Mr. Kim

Maandag werd officieel bekend gemaakt dat onze trainer/coach Mr Kim zijn contract niet zal verlengen. Vervelend nieuws, maar natuurlijk zagen wij dit aankomen binnen de selectie. De laatste paar dagen is er alweer veel geschreven en gespeculeerd over de opvolging van Mr Kim. Er worden veel Nederlandse namen genoemd en ik zal eerlijk zeggen: ik acht de kans vrij klein dat de opvolger van Kim uit Nederland komt. Als spelersgroep hebben we ons de afgelopen tijd afgevraagd aan welke eisen de nieuwe trainer moet voldoen. Ik zal een korte profielomschrijving geven:

–    Om te beginnen moet de opvolger gedreven en enthousiast zijn;

–    Uit Europa afkomstig zijn;

–    Op zowel technisch als tactisch gebied een aanwinst zijn. Variatie in de trainingen en goed kunnen aangeven (denk aan multishuttle oefeningen);

–    Een goed team vormen met de andere coach;

–   Bereid zijn administratieve taken op zich te nemen (trainingsschema’s maken, behandelschema’s samenstellen, overleg voeren met medische staf etc.)

–    Gespecialiseerd zijn in dubbel en gemengddubbel;

–    Ervaring hebben met het mentale aspect bij topsport;

–    Openstaan voor externe coaches, die de ontwikkeling van het individu willen stimuleren;

–   Ervaring als coach van een nationale selectie is niet noodzakelijk, wel gewenst. Daarmee wordt bedoeld dat het niet perse iemand hoeft te zijn die al jarenlang in het vak zit. Ook een ex topspeler zou ons verder kunnen helpen;

Natuurlijk is dit maar een beknopte samenvatting van de eigenschappen die de nieuwe trainer volgens ons als spelers moet hebben, maar de belangrijkste punten zijn er wel in opgenomen. Nu is het te hopen dat Badminton Nederland er alles aan gaat doen om zo snel mogelijk een nieuwe trainer te vinden, want als in mei de Olympische kwalificatie periode begint zullen we hem/haar zeer hard nodig hebben.
