Looking back on Polish International

Yesterday afternoon I came back from Wroclaw in Poland where we played the Polish International last week.

First of all my apologies for the limited information on my site and on Twitter. The internet in our hotel was very bad: reason why it wasn’t possible to give regular updates.

This time I played two events. Apart from the men’s double with Dave I could also play the mixed doubles with Samantha. The last international tournament we played together was 2 months ago and that was noticeable. Our opponents were the first pair from the Ukraine and, as far as I am concerned, we lost unnecessarily with 21-23 and 19-21. I played too hasty and careless which made me make quite some unnecessary mistakes. It was a pity because we played only half of what we are able to and it should have been possible to make this match a win. I really hope that the coming weeks when we prepare ourselves for the  European Championships the mixed doubles will get some more attention than usual. The trust will benefit from some specific exercises and the corresponding multi shuttle trainings.

The men’s doubles tournament went a lot better. The first round isn’t worth mentioning except that we needed 16 minutes only to defeat our opponents. In the second round we met the Austrians Koch and Zauner for the third time this year. In Sweden we won the match in two very well played games. During the European Team Championships for men in Amsterdam we needed three long games to book the win and last Friday it was a two game victory again.

Saturday afternoon, in the quarter finals, we met the British combination Ellis and van Rietvelde. Although we didn’t get the right rhythm we won the first game with 22-20. The second game we lost with the same figures. At a certain stage in the third game we were facing a 9-15 arrears but than we managed to score a series of consecutive points. From that moment on we stayed close to each other and in the final stage we managed to beat them: 21-19.   

That evening in the semi finals we met the Russians Ivanov and Sozonov who were also our opponents in the final in Sweden 2 months ago. Just like then we again didn’t stand a chance although we played a much better match but the level difference is still big. Especially our service situation was not good enough and one way or the other this should improve if we want to link up with the (sub) world top.   

The coming weeks we shall train very hard for the Dutch International and the European Championships in Sweden and I feel that I have the necessary fighting spirit.

Terugblik op Polish International

Gistermiddag ben ik teruggekomen uit Wroclaw waar we de afgelopen week de Polish International speelden.

Ten eerste excuses voor de beperkte informatievoorziening op de site en op Twitter. Het internet in ons hotel was bar slecht dus het was niet mogelijk om zo nu en dan updates te geven. Ik speelde naast de dubbel met Dave ook weer eens een gemengddubbel met Samantha. Het laatste internationale toernooi was alweer 2 maanden terug en dat was best te merken. We speelden tegen het eerste koppel uit Oekraïne en verloren in mijn ogen onnodig met 21-23 en 19-21. Ik speelde veel te gehaast en te onrustig, waardoor er behoorlijk wat onnodige fouten van m’n racket kwamen. Zonde, want voor mijn gevoel hebben we op de helft van ons kunnen gespeeld en had de winst er gewoon ingezeten. Ik hoop dat we de komende weken in de voorbereiding op de Europese Kampioenschappen ook wat meer aandacht besteden aan de mix, want dat schiet er toch vaak bij in. Wat specifieke oefeningen en de bijbehorende multishuttle trainingen zullen het vertrouwen zeker ten goede komen.

Het dubbeltoernooi verliep een stuk beter. De eerste ronde is het vermelden haast niet waard, behalve dan dat we in 16 minuten klaar waren met onze tegenstanders. In de tweede ronde troffen we alweer voor de derde keer dit jaar de Oostenrijkers Koch en Zauner. In Zweden wonnen we in twee makkelijke, erg sterk gespeelde games. Tijdens het EK mannenteams in Amsterdam konden we ze pas na drie lange games op de knieën krijgen. Vrijdagavond ging de overwinning weer in twee games naar ons.

Zaterdagmiddag speelden we in de kwartfinale tegen de Britse combinatie Ellis en Van Rietvelde. We zaten niet goed in de partij maar wonnen wel de eerste game met 22-20. De tweede game verloren we met dezelfde cijfers. In de derde game stonden we met 9-15 achter, maar toen wisten we een serie punten achter elkaar te scoren. Het ging weer gelijk op en in de eindfase trokken wij aan het langste eind: 21-19.

’s Avonds troffen we in de halve finale onze tegenstanders uit de finale van Zweden, de Russen Ivanov en Sozonov. Net als in de finale van Zweden twee maanden terug hadden we ook nu geen kans, alhoewel we wel een betere partij speelden. Toch is het niveauverschil nog wel erg groot en werden we vooral op de service situatie afgerekend. Dit zal op de een of andere manier toch moeten veranderen willen we de aansluiting vinden bij de (sub)wereldtop.

De komende paar weken gaan we keihard trainen voor de Dutch International en het EK in Zweden. En om eerlijk te zijn: ik heb zin om te bikkelen!
