On day 1 of the Super Series in Tokyo, there were a number of surprises and unfortunately all Dutch participants were eliminated.
Yao Jie, eighth seeded, lost in two games from the Korean Sung and Taufik Hidayat lost in a thrilling match of Japan’s Sho Sasaki. In the men’s doubles a few top pairs already lost in the first round. Boe and Mogensen from Denmark, the number 3 on the seeding list, lost from Chan and Lim from Malaysia. Apart from the Danes also Fang and Lee
from Chinese Taipei and Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung from Korea had to bite the dust. The latter lost from the Thai Sudket and Songphon.
The Dutch were unable to deal with their opponents. Dicky Palyama lost from the Dane Eric Jorgensen and Eric Pang from the Japanese Ueda. In the men’s doubles Koen Ridder and Ruud Bosch played well but finally they lost too in a 3 game match. The occasional combination of Yao Jie and Flandy Limpele in the mixed doubles was, considering the score of 16-21 and 14-21, not working out very well yet. They played against one of the weaker participating couples Haryanto and Lee from the USA.
Tomorrow there are a few nice matches. How about the re-match of the All England final in the mixed doubles Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir against Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei. But also Lee Chong Wei versus Kenichi Tago will be worth watching. Who will manage to reach the quarterfinals. We will see tomorrow!
