Yesterday evening a friendly encounter was scheduled between national teams of Germany and the Netherlands. In a well decorated sports hall both the senior and U19 teams met our eastern neighbours.
In advance the organiser had high expectations about the number of spectators but when the national anthems were played there were about 150 people on the tribunes. But fortunately more people came in after the start of the matches. Â
These matches were not very spectacular. Holland won all 5 in 2 games. For me it was my 27th international encounter as member of the Dutch National Team and together with Samantha Barning we did the kick off with the mixed doubles. Our opponents were Andreas Heinz and Isabel Herttrich, a pair which normally doesn’t play together. In the beginning we didn’t play very well and from time to time we were even facing arrears but after the interval we put ourselves back on track. We won the first game with 21-16 and in the second game we maintained our level and kept the lead from the beginning. We won this game with 21-18 and put the score on 1-0 for Holland.
In the men’s single Nick Fransman met Fabian Hammes and the first game was quite exciting. Nick was confronted with 2 game points but he managed to ward them off. When he got his first game point he scored and put the first game on his account. In the second game Nick left no doubt who was the better player. Also Patty Stolzenbach won her match versus Carola Bott in 2 steady games. With an intermediate score of 3-0 the gain was already ours.
The men’s and ladies doubles were no real confrontations. The difference in level was too big. In two fast games both the men’s and the ladies doubles were won putting a final 5-0 on the scoreboard.
The U19 teams made it a bit more exciting. It was only in the final mixed doubles that Holland could triumph over the German team with a 3-2 score.
So both Orange teams could collect a trophy and that didn’t stay unnoticed in Assen!

Gisteravond stond de interland tegen Duitsland op het programma. In een mooi aangeklede sporthal speelden zowel de senioren als de onder 19 selectie een vriendschappelijke wedstrijd tegen onze Oosterburen.
Vooraf werd uitgesproken dat er tussen de 500 en 1000 man publiek verwacht werd, maar al snel bleek dat dit aantal niet gehaald ging worden. Tijdens het spelen van de volksliederen zaten er ongeveer 150 mensen in de zaal en toen we eenmaal bezig waren werd het gelukkig nog iets drukker.
De wedstrijden zelf waren niet zo heel erg spannend. Alle partijen werden in twee games door Nederland gewonnen. Zelf speelde ik, in mijn 27e wedstrijd voor Oranje, het gemengddubbel samen met mijn partner Samantha Barning. We speelden tegen Heinz en Herttrich, een combinatie die normaal gesproken niet met elkaar samenspeelt. Na een wat zwak begin waarin we af en toe achter stonden, wisten we halverwege de eerste game ons niveau te halen. De eerste game wonnen we met 21-16. In de tweede game konden we dit niveau vasthouden en kwamen we de hele game niet op achterstand. Met een score van 21-18 zetten we Nederland op een 1-0 voorsprong.
In de herenenkel van Nick was de eerste game nog erg spannend. Knap wist hij twee gamepoints weg te werken en zelf op zijn eerste gamepoint de game naar zich toe te trekken. In de tweede game liet Nick er geen twijfel over bestaan dat hij de betere speler was. Ook Patty won haar single in twee steady games van Carola Bott waardoor de winst al binnen was.
De heren en damesdubbelspel partijen waren niet echt wedstrijden. Het niveauverschil was daarvoor te groot. In twee snelle games werden zowel de mannen als de damesdubbel gewonnen en stond er een einduitslag van 5-0 op het scoreboard. Bij de onder 19 selectie was het iets spannender. Daar werd de winst pas in de afsluitende gemengddubbel binnen geslagen. Hierdoor konden zowel Oranje als Jong Oranje de trofee ophalen en was het nog lang erg onrustig in Assen!

Helaas moet ik alweer na een jaar afscheid nemen van mijn thuishaven, BC Duinwijck. Precies een jaar geleden had ik dit absoluut niet gedacht.
Toen ik in april 2011 gevraagd werd om terug te komen en het contract tekende, had ik de intentie om weer jarenlang voor Duinwijck uit te komen. Na een seizoen met wisselende resultaten van het team had ik bedacht dat ik aankomend seizoen dan toch echt wéér voor het landskampioenschap wilde gaan. Helaas is recent gebleken dat dat niet zo mag zijn, want duidelijk is geworden dat Duinwijck een andere koers gaat varen en dat verlenging van mijn contract op dezelfde voorwaarden niet mogelijk is, zo vertelde de nieuwe voorzitter mij afgelopen zaterdag. Aangezien ik verder geen financiële sponsoren heb, zie ik mij genoodzaakt de club te verlaten.
Ik vind het erg jammer, maar ik blijf in ieder geval lid van de vereniging en zal uiteraard nog de wedstrijden om de Carlton GT Cup spelen en natuurlijk de Europa Cup in Hongarije.

In the context of the National Sports Week I was guest at the morning show of the DJ’s Mattie and Wietze at Radio Q Music.
The past week these 2 young guys had been active in various sports like zumba, judo, checkers and rowing. Today they wanted to try badminton. A nice opportunity to promote our sport.
At 8.15 AM I arrived at the door of the studio in Amsterdam. After a quick cup of coffee I was taken to the small studio room where these 2 DJ’s and the producer present their early morning show. There was another guest before me, Thom the number 4 in the World Gay contest. He was co host during the last half hour of the show.
At 8.45 my “in depth interview” started. Well not exactly in depth……. After a short introduction I got 10 very interesting questions to answer e.g. do you take the shuttle bus to the airport. So a very serious interview indeed.
After the show the 2 DJ’s could prepare themselves for a Badminton workshop. I had brought them 2 National Team shirts, 2 rackets and a large box full of shuttles. Unfortunately there was no sports hall in the neighbourhood so we had to settle for the basement of the building where a yellow piece of rope between to poles served as a net. Everything necessary to promote our beautiful sport had been taken care of!!!!!!! Or……………..
Still both guys were surprised by the enormous speed of the shuttle and they almost wet their pants of fear to get a shuttlecock in their eye. After all it was a funny and also entertaining morning with a look behind the scenes of a commercial radio station.

Vanochtend was ik in het kader van de Nationale Sportweek 2012 te gast in de ochtendshow van Mattie en Wietze bij Q-music.
Gedurende de hele week hadden de jonge DJ’s al gesport. Zo was er aandacht voor zumba, judo, dammen, roeien en vandaag dus badminton. Een mooie manier om onze flitsende sport te promoten! Om 8.15u stond ik al voor de deur bij de studio in Amsterdam. Ik had koud een bakkie koffie gekregen of ik mocht al mee de studio in. Een klein kamertje waarin de twee DJ’s en een producer de uitzending presenteren. Voor mij was al een gast, namelijk de nummer vier van de World Gay verkiezing Thom. Mattie en Wietze hadden gedurende deze verkiezing regelmatig contact gehad met hem en volgens Ă©Ă©n van de luisteraars een beledigende uitspraak gedaan over hem. Aan de beide DJ’s dus de taak om hun excuus aan Thom aan te bieden. Hij leek zich overigens helemaal niet beledigd te voelen en presenteerde het laatste half uur van de show mee.
Om 8.45u ging mijn diepte interview dan beginnen. Alhoewel diepte interview…na een korte introductie werden er een 10-tal erg interessante vragen op mij afgevuurd. Zo werd er gevraagd of ik de shuttlebus richting Schiphol pak en of ik mijzelf wel eens een pluimpje geef. Een ontzettend serieus interview dus 
Nadat het foute uur afgelopen was, konden Mattie en Wietze zich klaar maken voor de badminton workshop. Ik had twee Nederlands Team shirts voor ze meegenomen, wat shuttles en ik gaf ze ieder een racket. Helaas was er geen sporthal dichtbij de studio en dus werden we gepromoveerd naar een soort van kelder waarin een geel touwtje werd gespannen dat als net fungeerde. Overal was aan gedacht dus en alle ingrediënten waren aanwezig om onze mooie sport te promoten! Ahum!
Toch waren beide mannen verrast door de enorme snelheid van de shuttle en deden ze het bijna in hun broek bij het idee een shuttle in het oog te krijgen. Het was een erg leuke ochtend en bovendien interessant om te zien hoe een radio uitzending verloopt bij een commerciële zender als Q.

For me the European Championships Tournament is over. Yesterday I lost the mens doubles as well as the mixed in the third round.
The matches on Tuesday were not very difficult. In both events we had a 2 game win. But Wednesday would be an extremely heavy day with, if all went well, 3 matches within a relatively short period of time.
Samantha and I started the day in the second round playing the Czech champions Bitman and Basova. Especially in the second game we performed very well and we kept the Czechs from coming into the right rhythm. So a two game win. Soon after this the next match was scheduled for which Dave and I had prepared ourselves during the past 10 days. For the third time this year we were going to meet the Russians Ivanov and Sozonov. In the final in Sweden and the semi finals in Poland we didn’t stand a chance so when the EC draw had been published we started to analyse their playing with our coach Gerben Bruijstens. As a result we adjusted parts of our training with the only purpose to make a good performance playing this top pair. My objective was to play at least two good games and we achieved that goal.
In the first game we stayed close together all the way and we even got 2 game points which we failed to capitalize. At their first game point they played a winner and the game was theirs. In the second game the Russians took a 16-12 lead but a good series of consecutive points brought us back in the game. At a 18-19 score we played 3 winners in a row and the second game was ours. Also in the third we stayed close together but at 15 all they scored 4 very important consecutive points making the gap too big to bridge and we lost the game with 16-21. Of course this was a pity after such a good match but after all we were very happy and proud that, thanks to our preparation, we had succeeded to really fight back and offer resistance!
One hour later it was Samantha’s and my turn and again versus Russians, the number 3 seeds. In both games we were able to keep up with our opponents but still we never came close to winning a game. We were not dissatisfied at all with the 21-16 and 21-18 especially because we were often the better lot in the rallies. But they scored just a bit better at the service of the Russian lady who was anticipating well and at the right spot most of the time.
Today are the quarter finals and I will definitely watch these matches. Tomorrow morning we travel by bus to Copenhagen where we will take the flight back to Amsterdam. After two tournaments in a row I intend to enjoy a badminton free weekend to relax and to reminisce on my silver medal last week at the Dutch International. I believe it is important to cherish such moments! When saying it I realize that I still may log in at Badmintoneurope.tv to watch some of the finals. It’s quite addictive badminton.

Het EK zit er op voor mij! Gisteren verloor ik in zowel de dubbel als mix in de derde ronde.
De wedstrijden op dinsdag waren niet echt heel lastig. Zowel in de dubbel (tegen Wit-Russen) als in de mix (tegen Zwitsers) ging de overwinning in twee makkelijke games naar ons toe. Woensdag zou dus een zware dag worden met, als alles goed ging, 3 partijen vrij snel achter elkaar.
Samantha en ik begonnen de dag in de tweede ronde tegen de Tsjechische kampioenen Bitman en Basova. Vooral in de tweede game speelden we erg sterk en we lieten de Tsjechen nooit in de wedstrijd komen. Een twee games overwinning dus. Daarna stond alweer vrij snel dé wedstrijd op het programma waar we ons gedurende anderhalve week op voorbereid hadden. Voor alweer de derde keer dit jaar moesten we aantreden tegen de Russen Ivanov en Sozonov. Zowel in de finale van Zweden als in de halve finale van Polen hadden we geen schijn van kans. Toen de loting voor dit EK eenmaal bekend was zijn we gaan analyseren samen met Gerben en hebben we delen van de trainingen op Papendal aangepast zodat we goed voor de dag konden komen tegen deze topdubbel. Ik had mezelf ten doel gesteld om nu in ieder geval twee goede games tegen ze te spelen.
Dit lukte! De eerste game ging helemaal gelijk op maar we kregen wel twee gamepoints. Helaas konden we die niet benutten en op hun eerste gamepoint sloegen ze toe. In de tweede game hadden de Russen een voorsprong van 16-12 maar een goede serie opeenvolgende punten bracht ons terug in de game. Bij 18-19 lukte het ons drie punten op rij te scoren en we pakten de tweede game! Ook in de derde game konden we tot 15-15 bij blijven maar daarna wisten ze 4 belangrijke punten te scoren. Het gat was ineens te groot en met 16-21 verloren wij de derde game. Uiteraard erg zonde na zo’n goede wedstrijd, maar we waren na afloop vooral erg blij en trots dat onze voorbereiding zijn vruchten had afgeworpen en we ze nu wĂ©l tegenstand konden bieden!
Een uur later moest ik samen met Sam alweer de baan op en ook nu weer tegen Russen, de nummers drie van de plaatsingslijst. In beide games konden we goed meekomen met ze, maar toch waren we nooit in de buurt van gamewinst. Met 21-16 en 21-18 waren we helemaal niet ontevreden, vooral omdat we eenmaal in de rally vaak de betere partij waren. Zij scoorden echter net wat beter op de service van de Russische dame, die overigens ook erg goed het spel leest en meestal op de juiste plek staat.
Vanmiddag en vanavond worden de kwartfinales gespeeld en uiteraard ga ik deze wedstrijden bekijken. Morgen rijden we met de bus terug naar Kopenhagen en vanuit daar pakken we het vliegtuig terug naar Amsterdam. Na twee toernooien op rij ga ik dit weekend eens genieten van een heerlijk vrij badmintonloos weekeinde en ook nog even nagenieten van de finaleplaats van afgelopen week bij de Dutch International, want het is belangrijk zulke momenten te koesteren! Alhoewel badmintonloos weekend…misschien toch af en toe even inloggen op badmintoneurope.tv om sommige finales te checken. Het blijft toch een verslaving, dat badminton

When I start writing this I am in the train from Copenhagen airport to Karlskrona, the Swedish city which hosts the European Championships Tournament this week. It is a 3½ hour journey and in about 30 minutes we have to change to a bus which will take us to our final destination. After having watched an episode of criminal minds I thought it to be a good idea to start writing a report on our final in Wateringen.
It was the third time this year that Dave and I reached the finals of an EBU tournament. This time we were facing the Malaysian World Junior Champions and unfortunately also these opponents proved to be too strong for us.
Before the match we had watched matches of these guys on video together with our coach Huaiwen Xu. We analysed their way of playing. We discovered a number of clear patterns among which their eagerness to play at the net after their service and their preference to make the third shot in the direction of the front court. We could also see that their defence was rather solid but later more about that.
In the first game both the Malaysians and we played very offensively. The rallies were not too long but for us quite effective. By the end of the game we managed to take a lead and win the game with 21-19.
The second game started with a long lasting rally and from that moment on the Malaysians changed their tactics. They fell back on their excellent defence and they sent us all over the court. We were completely surprised by this sudden change and because of that we started to make simple mistakes. In no time we were facing a 1-11 arrear. Slowly but steadily we managed to come back a bit but the difference was too big to bridge and we lost the game.
In the third game it was our intention not to allow them to take a big lead again but now they started very offensively. This smart approach of the young Malaysians surprised us again and for the second time we were confronted with a significant gap. Â Add up a few mistakes of the umpire and the defeat was a fact. Very unfortunate of course but I can only conclude that these young lads are very good already and able to easily change playing styles. Keep these guys in mind for the future I would say!!!
Now it is Monday morning and I have the first impression of Karlskrona at daylight. We are staying in a beautiful and modern new hotel situated at a fantastic lake which is probably an inlet of the sea. The sun is shining and from our room we have a beautiful view.
For me the tournament starts tomorrow afternoon with a mixed doubles versus a Swiss pair.
